Transnational intergenerational relationships and doing transcultural family through mandarin learning: an ethnographic glance at Chinese dynamics in four intercultural families in Germany.

This article explores the micro dimension within the field of intercultural family studies. The ethnographic study focuses on Chinese elements in transcultural upbringing practices within families with Chinese mothers and German fathers raising their children in Germany. It builds on the notion of family figuration practice in transnational grandparents-grandchildren relations, particularly Confucian-based transnational grandparenting, and the development of a 'third space' for transcultural family upbringing within intercultural families.

Self-Regulation in Preschool: Are Executive Function and Effortful Control Overlapping Constructs?

The concepts of executive function (EF) and effortful control (EC) are strikingly similar. EF originates from neurocognitive research and is described as an accumulation of cognitive processes that serve the goal-oriented self-regulation of an individual. EC originates from temperament research and is defined as the efficiency of executive attention, including the ability to inhibit a dominant response, activate a subdominant response, proceed in a planned manner, and recognize conflicts or errors.

Illusory traits: Wrong but sometimes useful.

Psychological measures frequently show trait-like properties, and the ontological status of stable psychological traits has been discussed for decades. We argue that these properties can emerge from causal dynamics of time-varying processes, which are from the analysis model, potentially leading to the estimation of traits that are, at least in part, illusory. Theories positing the importance of a large set of dynamic psychological causes across development are consistent with the existence of illusory traits.

Beauty and the brain - Investigating the neural and musical attributes of beauty during naturalistic music listening.

Beauty judgments are common in daily life, but rarely studied in cognitive neuroscience. Here, in three studies, we searched for the neural mechanisms of musical beauty using a naturalistic free-listening paradigm applied to behavioral and neuroimaging recordings and validated by experts' judgments. In Study 1, 30 adults continuously rated the perceived beauty of three musical pieces using a motion sensor.

Effects of tattoos on the aesthetic appreciation of human stimuli as influenced by expertise, tattoo status, and age reflecting internalized social norms.

Scientific interest in body modifications continues to grow, and tattoos have recently become a subject of empirical aesthetics. While conceptual structures of tattoo aesthetics have been studied, the question of how tattoos are aesthetically appreciated has not yet been studied. In this study, we examined how tattoos influence the aesthetic appreciation of human stimuli and uncovered differences in beauty perceived by individuals older and younger than 50, which we consider indicative of different internalized social norms, experts (tattoo artists) and nonexperts, and tattooed and nontattooed individuals.

Novick Meets Bayes: Improving the Assessment of Individual Students in Educational Practice and Research by Capitalizing on Assessors' Prior Beliefs.

The assessment of individual students is not only crucial in the school setting but also at the core of educational research. Although classical test theory focuses on maximizing insights from student responses, the Bayesian perspective incorporates the assessor's prior belief, thereby enriching assessment with knowledge gained from previous interactions with the student or with similar students. We propose and illustrate a formal Bayesian approach that not only allows to form a stronger belief about a student's competency but also offers a more accurate assessment than classical test theory.

Mechanical thrombectomy failure in anterior and posterior circulation stroke: current results from a high-volume comprehensive center.

Background: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is an established therapy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS), but recanalization is not always achieved. Common reasons are inadequate removal at the thrombus site and difficulties with the access route. In order to identify risk factors for MT failure we conducted a retrospective study on a high-volume comprehensive stroke center.

Predicting closed quarters battle capability - Examining the influence of personality, attentional ability, 2D:4D-ratio and mindfulness on tactical performance.

Close Quarters Battle (CQB) is an operational approach in confined spaces gaining increasing significance in urban combat missions. Due to its high psychophysiological demands, the CQB ability is an essential selection criterion for special forces. Until now, there has been no research on predictors of CQB capability.

Materialities of the In/between: Drugs and Medical Knowledge between Europe and East Asia.

This special issue presents six research papers that were developed within the Taiwanese-German working group "Materialities of Medical Cultures in/between Europe and East Asia." Our working group uses the concept of "in/between" as an umbrella term to study the cultural history of drugs and the practices of medicine and care. This issue's articles address the question of how drugs and medical knowledge emerged from the various in/between spaces created by encounters between East Asian and European medical cultures.

Correlating the 3D Morphology of Polymer-Based Battery Electrodes with Effective Transport Properties.

Polymer-based batteries represent a promising candidate for next-generation batteries due to their high power densities, decent cyclability, and environmentally friendly synthesis. However, their performance essentially depends on the complex multiscale morphology of their electrodes, which can significantly affect the transport of ions and electrons within the electrode structure. In this paper, we present a comprehensive investigation of the complex relationship between the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of polymer-based battery electrodes and their effective transport properties.

Cognitive warfare: a conceptual analysis of the NATO ACT cognitive warfare exploratory concept.

This study evaluates NATO ACT's cognitive warfare concept from a political science perspective, exploring its utility beyond military applications. Despite its growing presence in scholarly discourse, the concept's interdisciplinary nature has hindered a unified definition. By analyzing NATO's framework, developed with input from diverse disciplines and both military and civilian researchers, this paper seeks to assess its applicability to political science.

Western Anthelmintics in Early Twentieth-Century China Colonial Practices and Knowledge on "Tropical Diseases" of the In/between.

Protestant (medical) missionaries were the main proponents of Western medicine in China after the Opium Wars. Several studies have highlighted how they used spectacular surgery as a means of gaining public trust. As well as surgery, they also administered anthelmintic drugs such as santonin as a tool of persuasion and conversion.

Networked Multicomponent Ensemble as AND Gate with FRET Output.

A networked supramolecular logic AND gate system is accomplished using precise chemical communication within a multicomponent ensemble via metal ion-driven self-sorting processes. The cybernetic AND gate is composed of a copper(I)-loaded nanoswitch, an aza-crown ether and a rhodamine receptor. The modus operandi of the AND gate, from state (0,0), was induced with stoichiometric amounts of two inputs (IN-1=Hg, IN-2=Li) generating copper(I) ions as output only in state (1,1).

An evaluation of the performance of stopping rules in AI-aided screening for psychological meta-analytical research.

Several AI-aided screening tools have emerged to tackle the ever-expanding body of literature. These tools employ active learning, where algorithms sort abstracts based on human feedback. However, researchers using these tools face a crucial dilemma: When should they stop screening without knowing the proportion of relevant studies? Although numerous stopping rules have been proposed to guide users in this decision, they have yet to undergo comprehensive evaluation.

Functional Data Analysis: An Introduction and Recent Developments.

Functional data analysis (FDA) is a statistical framework that allows for the analysis of curves, images, or functions on higher dimensional domains. The goals of FDA, such as descriptive analyses, classification, and regression, are generally the same as for statistical analyses of scalar-valued or multivariate data, but FDA brings additional challenges due to the high- and infinite dimensionality of observations and parameters, respectively. This paper provides an introduction to FDA, including a description of the most common statistical analysis techniques, their respective software implementations, and some recent developments in the field.

Assessment of treatment expectations in people with suspected endometriosis: A psychometric analysis.

Background: Treatment expectations influence clinical outcomes in various physical and psychological conditions; however, no studies have explored their role in endometriosis treatment. It is necessary to understand how these expectations can be measured to study treatment expectations and their effects in clinical practice. This study aimed to psychometrically analyze and compare different treatment expectation measurements and describe treatment expectations in women with suspected endometriosis.

The Presentation of Online Self Scale for Adults (POSSA), originally developed by Strimbu et al. is a well-regarded instrument for assessing online self-presentation. This study evaluated the factorial structure, reliability, and validity of the German adaptation of POSSA.

Digital transformation and organizational restlessness.

In modern society, organizations are expected to be increasingly flexible and adapt to constantly changing environments. While such flexibility is often considered a positive trait of organizations, the risks of continuous organizational change are often overlooked. Against this background, we argue that continuous, multiple and uncoordinated organizational change can lead to a state we define as "organizational restlessness" and a loss of the benefits of stable structures.

In the brain, functional connections form a network whose topological organization can be described by graph-theoretic network diagnostics. These include characterizations of the community structure, such as modularity and participation coefficient, which have been shown to change over the course of childhood and adolescence. To investigate if such changes in the functional network are associated with changes in cognitive performance during development, network studies often rely on an arbitrary choice of preprocessing parameters, in particular the proportional threshold of network edges.

The current study examined whether these interactions also affect rule-breaking behavior that is explicitly committed with friends.

Multiomic profiling of medulloblastoma reveals subtype-specific targetable alterations at the proteome and N-glycan level.

Medulloblastomas (MBs) are malignant pediatric brain tumors that are molecularly and clinically heterogenous. The application of omics technologies-mainly studying nucleic acids-has significantly improved MB classification and stratification, but treatment options are still unsatisfactory. The proteome and their N-glycans hold the potential to discover clinically relevant phenotypes and targetable pathways.
