Riverine suspended matter (river-SPM) contains large amounts of natural particles consisting of cellulose and lignin, posing a challenge for microplastic (MPs) analysis. Additionally, organic matter composition under seasonal and discharge-related dynamics varies for each river. Despite the multifaceted and diverse challenges that refugees, migrants, and asylum-seekers experience when entering a new country, they remain notably underrepresented in the evaluation and understanding of the health and wellbeing impacts of outdoor health interventions. We addressed this knowledge gap by a mixed-methods evaluation (questionnaires, focus groups and photo elicitation activity) facilitated by a community researcher. Qualitative data (focus groups and photo elicitation activity) revealed that the participants saw the social component of outdoor activities as a critical factor in improving their wellbeing, an insight not captured by established quantitative wellbeing scales.

This paper presents an approach to apply aquatic passive sampling (PS) in regulatory chemical water quality monitoring in Europe. Absorption-based passive sampling is well developed and suitable for the sampling of hydrophobic chemicals, some of which are European Water Framework Directive priority substances with Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) derived for biota. Considering a chemical activity approach to chemical risk assessment, we propose equilibrium concentration in lipids (from passive water sampling) as a reference value for measured concentrations in biota.

Background: This research investigates the determinants of circulating FGF21 levels in a cohort reflecting metabolic disease progression, examining the associations of circulating FGF21 with morphology and function of adipose tissue (AT), and with metabolic adjustments following metabolic surgery.
Methods: We measured serum FGF21 in 678 individuals cross-sectionally and in 189 undergoing metabolic surgery longitudinally. Relationships between FGF21 levels, AT histology, transcriptomes and proteomes, cardiometabolic risk factors, and post-surgery metabolic adjustments were assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses, causal mediation analysis, and network integration of AT transcriptomes and proteomes.

Contamination of water resources with mixtures of organic micropollutants (OMP) including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals is a serious threat to aquatic organisms and human health. Long-term exposure to such pollutants may cause detrimental effects even at very low concentrations. Water resources in urban agglomerations in low- and medium-income countries may be under particular pressure due to high population densities, significant industrial activities, and limited water treatment and management resources.

In Europe, various conservation programs adopted to maintain or restore biodiversity have experienced differing levels of success. However, a synthesis about major factors for success of biodiversity-related conservation programs across ecosystems and national boundaries, such as incentives, subsidies, enforcement, participation, or spatial context, is missing. Using a balanced scorecard survey among experts, we analyzed and compared factors contributing to success or failure of three different conservation programs: two government programs (Natura 2000 and the ecological measures of the Water Framework Directive) and one conservation program of a non-governmental organization (NGO; Rewilding Europe), all focusing on habitat and species conservation.

Spills of petroleum or its derivatives in the environment lead to an enrichment of microorganisms able to degrade such compounds. The interactions taking place in such microbial communities are complex and poorly understood, since they depend on multiple factors, including diversity and metabolic potential of the microorganisms and a broad range of fluctuating environmental conditions. In our previous study, a complete characterization, based on high-throughput sequencing, was performed in a jet-fuel plume using soil samples and in in-situ microcosms amended with hydrocarbons and exposed for 120 days.

The efficacy of phosphorus (P) based fertilizers is frequently compromised by soil dynamics that render much of the applied P unavailable for crops. This study aimed to: (i) validate a new P model's prediction of plant-available P; (ii) analyze the effects of organic versus mineral fertilization on P availability and crop yield; and (iii) examine temporal changes in P pools under various fertilization regimes.
