There is a constant search for new possibilities of the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia. The problem is important because of the growing prevalence of dementia, 60-80% of which are caused by Alzheimer's disease (AD). Over the last years, changes in the retina are thought to be a marker neurodegeneration.

Aim: To study the magnitude of objective accommodative response (OAR) with account to the method of image defocusing. The latter can be realized by bringing the object nearer to the eye or by adding a minus lens in front of the viewer.
Material And Methods: We examined 63 patients (126 eyes) with different refraction aged from 7 to 31 years.

Unlabelled: Perinatal inflammatory retinal diseases and intrauterine retinal maldevelopments are mistaken for retinoblastoma as often as in 8-16% of cases.
Aim: To analyze the infectious status in children with retinoblastoma and pseudoretinoblastoma at different ages.
Material And Methods: A total of 47 retinoblastoma suspects aged 4-69 months were enrolled.

The study represents the new findings at the crossroads of chemistry and medicine, particularly between medicinal and organic chemistry and ophthalmology. In this work we describe how the chemical reactivity of indolinone scaffold may be used to create small molecule ligands with strong biological response comparable with and larger than that of endogenous hormone. The synthesis of oxindole-based melatonin and 5-methoxycarbonylamino-N-acetyltryptamine (5-MCA-NAT) analogues was proposed and their ability to influence intraocular pressure (IOP) was studied in vivo.

The objective of the present study was the analysis of the results of transethmoidal decompressive orbitotomy (TEDO) with the resection of the bone matrix of the medial and inferior orbital walls in the patients presenting with endocrine ophthalmopathy (EOP) with the purpose of reduction of the risk of development of this pathological conditions. A total of 51 patient with EOP at the stage of complete remission or pharmacotherapeutic compensation underwent transethmoidal decompressive medial orbitotomy in the ENT Clinic of 1 I.M.

The polymerase chain reaction was used to detect DNA of these pathogens in tumor biopsies, vitreous body of 10 enucleated eyes, as well as in plasma IgG-antibodies to HHV 6 were revealed in 50% of patients; IgG-antibodies to HHV 8, in 5.3% of patients.

The presence of Igm-, IgA, - IgG- antibodies to the herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus (СMV), epstein-Barr virus (eBV), human herpes virus (HHV) type 6, Toxoplasma gondii, mycoplasma hominis and ureaplasma urealyticum in the serum was tested using ELISA. In the polymerase chain reaction the DNA of these pathogens were detected in the blood plasma of 18 patients and tumor biopsy specimens from 10 eyes.

Purpose: To compare the diagnostic value of ocular blood flow parameters and choroidal thickness (CT) with standard structural parameters for early glaucoma detection.
Methods: A total of 32 patients with pre-perimetric glaucoma were compared with 30 age-matched normal subjects. The thickness of the ganglion cell complex (GCC), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and the choroid and foveal loss volume (FLV) were measured by means of optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Complicated high myopia is one of the leading causes responsible for the disablement in the children associated with visual impairment especially when it is combined with other pathological conditions and abnormalities among which are disorders of the musculoskeletal system. In the present study, we for the first time examined visually impaired schoolchildren (n=44) who suffered from high myopia complications making use of the computed optical topographer for the evaluation of the state of their vertebral column. The control group consisted of 60 children attending a secondary school.

Human recombinant protein Wnt7a (hrWnt7a) inhibits cell proliferative activity and triggers cell polarization. Although cell polarization process was maintained only over a short time, probably via microenvironmental stimuli, hrWnt7a is involved in the transformation of the retinal pigment epithelium. Analysis of Wnt signaling pathway and its regulation will help to understand the processes in retinal pigment epithelial cells under pathological conditions, which can be useful in developing new generation drugs.

We performed morphofunctional analysis of cultured rabbit buccal epithelial cells in the primary culture, during passaging, and upon interaction with collagen substrates. Three different morphological types were identified. It was demonstrated that precursors of rabbit buccal epithelium were characterized by high proliferative activity, retain their biological properties throughout long-term culturing, and adhere to various collagen substrates.

Deepithelialization of the cornea (diameter 7 mm) was performed in rabbits and the rate of defect epithelialization was evaluated. Conjunctival ischemia was modeled by application of graduated alkaline burn. Antioxidant activity and content of nitrates and nitrites was measured in the tear fluid before and after burn by chemiluminescence and Griess methods, respectively.

Aim: To analyze the associations of the rs3087243 CTLA4 polymorphism and the rs1800629 TNF polymorphism with endocrine ophthalmopathy (EOP) in ethnic Russian patients with Graves' disease (GD).
Material And Methods: The case-control study enrolled 205 patients with GD. The distribution of alleles and genotypes of the rs3087243 CTLA4 and rs1800629 TNF polymorphisms was studied in 141 patients with GD and EOP (a GD+EOP group) and 64 patients with GD without EOP (a GD-EOP group).

Aims: This study aimed to determine the influence of carotid artery surgery on ocular functions and ocular blood flow in patients with ocular ischaemic syndrome (OIS) in the late postoperative period.
Methods: One hundred and eighty patients with OIS were operated on; 104 of them suffered from acute forms of the ischaemic disease and 76 patients had chronic forms of ocular ischaemia. Before surgery and in the course of 6 months and 12 months afterwards, all the patients were examined.

Mitochondria-targeted cationic plastoquinone derivative SkQ1 (10-(6'-plastoquinonyl) decyltriphenylphosphonium) has been investigated as a potential tool for treating a number of ROS-related ocular diseases. In OXYS rats suffering from a ROS-induced progeria, very small amounts of SkQ1 (50 nmol/kg per day) added to food were found to prevent development of age-induced cataract and retinopathies of the eye, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation in skeletal muscles, as well as a decrease in bone mineralization. Instillation of drops of 250 nM SkQ1 reversed cataract and retinopathies in 3-12-month-old (but not in 24-month-old) OXYS rats.
