The stereoselective synthesis of the ()-enamide fragment of chondrochloren () is described. A Buchwald-type coupling between amide and ()-bromide was used to generate the required fragment. The recently isolated strain L21-Fru-AB represents moderately halophilic, obligately anaerobic and saccharolytic bacteria that thrive in the suboxic transition zones of hypersaline microbial mats. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes, RpoB proteins and gene content indicated that strain L21-Fru-AB represents a novel species and genus affiliated with a distinct phylum-level lineage originally designated Verrucomicrobia subdivision 5. A survey of environmental 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that members of this newly recognized phylum are wide-spread and ecologically important in various anoxic environments ranging from hypersaline sediments to wastewater and the intestine of animals.

Unlabelled: To explore mechanisms of hepatitis C viral (HCV) replication we screened a compound library including licensed drugs. Flunarizine, a diphenylmethylpiperazine used to treat migraine, inhibited HCV cell entry in vitro and in vivo in a genotype-dependent fashion. Analysis of mosaic viruses between susceptible and resistant strains revealed that E1 and E2 glycoproteins confer susceptibility to flunarizine.

The Tat system can transport folded, signal peptide-containing proteins (Tat substrates) across energized membranes of prokaryotes and plant plastids. A twin-arginine motif in the signal peptide of Tat substrates is recognized by TatC-containing complexes, and TatA permits the membrane passage. Often, as in the model Tat systems of Escherichia coli and plant plastids, a third component - TatB - is involved that resembles TatA but has a higher affinity to TatC.

Objective: AIDS-related lymphomas are high grade and aggressively metastatic with poor prognosis. Understanding structure-function links of microbial communities is a central theme of microbial ecology since its beginning. To this end, we studied the spatial variability of the bacterioplankton community structure and composition across the central Baltic Sea at four stations, which were up to 450 km apart and at a depth profile representative for the central part (Gotland Deep, 235 m). Bacterial community structure was followed by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA)- and 16S rRNA gene-based fingerprints using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) electrophoresis.

Here we demonstrated that bis-(3',5')-cyclic dimeric inosine monophosphate (c-di-IMP) exhibits potent adjuvant properties. BALB/c or C57BL/6 mice were immunized with the model antigens beta-galactosidase (beta-Gal) or Ovalbumin (OVA) alone or co-administered with c-di-IMP by the intranasal route. Animals receiving c-di-IMP showed significantly higher anti-beta-Gal or OVA immunoglobulin G titres (IgG) in sera than those vaccinated with beta-Gal or OVA alone.
