Purpose: Responsive behavior, often referred to as behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), is among the most critical disorders in dementia whereby nursing personnel in hospitals are increasingly confronted with such symptoms. The purpose was to reduce the level of BPSD in an acute hospital environment through a stepwise procedure followed by the initiation of a needs-oriented treatment.
Methods: An open, prospective, interventional study with before-after comparisons was used to implement "Serial Trial Intervention" (STI) in three hospital wards (internal medicine, surgery, geriatric) after its adaption for hospital setting which was supplemented with a detailed pain assessment.

German Hodgkin Study Group, Department I of Internal Medicine and Center of Integrated Oncology Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, German Hodgkin Study Group, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital of Cologne, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany. Electronic address:
Background: The German Hodgkin Study Group's HD18 trial established the safety and efficacy of PET-guided eBEACOPP (bleomycin, etoposide, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone in escalated doses) for the treatment of advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma. However, because of a protocol amendment during the enrolment period (June 1, 2011) that changed standard treatment from eight to six cycles, the results of the HD18 trial have been partially immature. We report a prespecified 5-year follow-up analysis of the completed HD18 trial.

Objective: Treatment guidelines for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) do not recommend antiviral therapy for patients in the immune-tolerant phase of the disease, which generally occurs in children who acquire hepatitis B virus (HBV) vertically and may last for decades. On the basis of promising results of a pilot study, we conducted a randomized, controlled, multicenter study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of antiviral therapy in children and adolescents with immune-tolerant CHB.
Methods: Fifty-nine children aged 3 to <18 years hepatitis B e antigen-positive with an HBV DNA titer >20,000 IU/mL and persistently normal alanine aminotransferase levels were randomized to 56 weeks of antiviral therapy with an oral nucleoside analogue [entecavir or lamivudine], combined with subcutaneous peginterferon alfa-2a from week 8, or 80 weeks of untreated observation.

Background And Objective: Due to changing demographics geriatric patients with multiple comorbidities and proximal femoral fractures are an increasing patient population. In these patient groups, peripheral regional anesthesia could become increasingly more important besides established procedures, such as neuraxial or general anesthesia. The aim of this single center feasibility study was to evaluate a combined blockade technique of the lumbosacral plexus for three predefined subgroups depending on the type of hip fracture.

Background: Increased nerve activity causes hypertension and kidney disease. Recent studies suggest that renal denervation reduces BP in patients with hypertension. Renal NE release is regulated by prejunctional 2A-adrenoceptors on sympathetic nerves, and 2A-adrenoceptors act as autoreceptors by binding endogenous NE to inhibit its own release.

Background And Objectives: We hypothesized that different injection techniques and volumes in thoracic-paravertebral blocks (TPVB) lead to different patterns of dye spread. In particular, we investigated whether an alternating injection technique leads to complete staining of all adjacent intercostal nerves.
Methods: This comparative anatomical investigation was performed using 10 or 20 mL of dye (Alcian Blue) in 10 unfixed donor cadavers (54 injections) that were designated for education or research purposes.

Tissue macrophages are important components of tissue homeostasis and inflammatory pathologies. In the peritoneal cavity, resident macrophages interact with a variety of immune cells and can exhibit broad range of phenotypes and functions. Forkhead-box-P3 (FOXP3) regulatory T cells (Tregs) play an indispensable role in maintaining immunological tolerance, yet whether, and how the pathological condition that results from the lack of functional Tregs affects peritoneal macrophages (PM) is largely unknown.
