: Recently, minimally invasive access via right anterolateral mini-thoracotomy (RAMT) has been gaining popularity in cardiac surgery. This approach is also an option for surgeons performing aortic surgery. The aim of this study is to present our surgical method, highlighting the total endoscopic minimally invasive approach via RAMT for replacement of the ascending aorta (AAR) with or without involvement of the aortic root and the aortic valve.

Tissue-specific gene expression and gene regulation lead to a better understanding of tissue-specific physiology and pathophysiology. We analyzed the transcriptome and genetic regulatory profiles of two distinct gastric sites, corpus and antrum, to identify tissue-specific gene expression and its regulation. Gastric corpus and antrum mucosa biopsies were collected during routine gastroscopies from up to 431 healthy individuals.

Introduction: Dizziness is a common symptom with diverse causes, including ear-nose-throat, internal, neurological, or psychiatric origins. While for most parts treatable in nonemergency settings, it can also signal time-critical conditions, like an unnoticed stroke, requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent lasting harm or death. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of the Manchester Triage System in classifying patients presenting with dizziness based on final diagnoses and patient outcomes, as no specific flow chart exists for this symptom in the MTS.

Objectives: In patients with left heart disease and severe aortic stenosis (AS), pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common comorbidity and predictor of poor prognosis. Untreated AS aggravates PH leading to an increased right ventricular afterload and, in line to right ventricular dysfunction. The surgical benefit of aortic valve replacement (AVR) in elderly patients with severe AS and PH could be limited due to the multiple comorbidities and poor outcomes.

Introduction: The prolonged use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support is associated with increased consumption of platelets and hemolysis. The prognostic impact of thrombocytopenia prior to and during ECMO support on patient's short-, mid- and long-term outcomes has been critically evaluated and discussed over the last years. However, only few data have been published on thrombocytopenia caused by mobile ECMO support.

Objectives: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains a high-risk procedure and is associated with adverse outcomes. The risk factors of acute stroke in the above-mentioned patients stay unclear and some appropriate data is lacking in the literature. Thus, we aimed to investigate the predictors of acute stroke in patients undergoing CABG surgery in ACS.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is clinically heterogenous according to location (cardia/non-cardia) and histopathology (diffuse/intestinal). We aimed to characterize the genetic risk architecture of GC according to its subtypes. Another aim was to examine whether cardia GC and oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) and its precursor lesion Barrett's oesophagus (BO), which are all located at the gastro-oesophageal junction (GOJ), share polygenic risk architecture.

Background: The full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical spine care is difficult to assess due to a lack in nationwide evidence from more recent phases of the pandemic. We aimed to describe changes in in-hospital processes associated with spinal fusion procedures in the treatment of spinal infections (SI) during different phases of the pandemic.
Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we examined the in-hospital prevalence and outcomes of spinal fusion procedures for SI (along with patient characteristics, rates of transfer to intensive care units, and mortality rates) during the first four waves of the pandemic compared with the corresponding prepandemic periods in 2019.

Background: Stent retriever technology has evolved, and significantly longer devices have become available for mechanical thrombectomy (MT) of large cerebral vessel occlusions in ischemic stroke. We hypothesized that increased stent retriever length may improve the rate of complete angiographic reperfusion and decrease the respective number of attempts, resulting in a better clinical outcome.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with large vessel occlusion in the anterior and posterior circulation treated with stent retriever MT.
