Background Whiplash-associated disorders are sequelae of traffic accidents that frequently result in sustained pain and disability due to a broader spectrum of symptoms than typical neck pain. Several studies have used the length of time from injury to the completion of insurance claims as a measure of recovery time for patients with whiplash-associated disorders. However, studies on the initial factors in patients whose treatment exceeds 90 days are lacking.

Objective: Prevention and improvement of hypertension is one of the most important health issues worldwide. The traditional Japanese diet contributes to the prevention of some non-communicable diseases associated with hypertension. However, whether traditional Japanese dietary patterns are associated with hypertension prevalence and systolic blood pressure (SBP) worldwide remains unknown.

Background: Reducing the environmental impact of the food supply is important for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) worldwide. Previously, we developed the Traditional Japanese Diet Score (TJDS) and reported in a global ecological study that the Japanese diet is associated with reducing obesity and extending healthy life expectancy etc. We then examined the relationship between the TJDS and environmental indicators.

[Purpose] To identify factors that affect the return to solitary living of patients with stroke who had lived alone prior to stroke onset. [Participants and Methods] From January 2017 to March 2020, we enrolled a total of 103 patients with stroke who had lived alone prior to stroke onset and retrospectively analyzed their age, gender, length of hospital stay, outcome (return to living alone or not), functional independence measure at discharge, and social score at discharge. We also analyzed the relationship between the above factors and the outcome.

Background And Purpose: We aimed to identify reliable neuroradiological features of the brainstem reflecting the neurological symptoms of patients with chronic disorders of consciousness (DOCs) due to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Methods: We retrospectively examined 86 patients with chronic DOCs due to severe TBI caused by automobile accidents. We studied the relationships among (1) neurological symptoms, including consciousness level, (2) integrated cognitive/physical condition, and (3) neuroradiological features of the brainstem (brainstem volume on MRI, fractional anisotropy [FA] value in the brainstem, and standardized uptake value [SUV] of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose [FDG] on positron emission tomography in the brainstem).

Objective: To determine the relationship between muscle stiffness assessed using ultrasound shear wave elastography, spinal motor neuron excitability assessed using the F wave, and clinical findings of spasticity in patients with spastic muscle overactivity following severe traumatic brain injury.
Methods: This study enrolled 17 inpatients with severe traumatic brain injury and 20 healthy volunteers. Biceps brachii muscle stiffness was then evaluated using ultrasound shear wave speed.

Objective: Studies conducted on Japanese people have suggested that a traditional Japanese diet contributes to good health, longevity, and protection against several non-communicable diseases. However, it is unknown whether traditional Japanese dietary patterns are associated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and cancer mortality globally. The purpose of this cross-sectional and longitudinal ecological study is to clarify the global association between the traditional Japanese diet score (TJDS) and all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and total cancer mortality.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to use Mirror Therapy to clarify the effect of the differences in image recall ability and the types of finger exercises on the excitability of spinal nerve function. This study will help establish the methodology for therapeutic intervention using Mirror Therapy. [Participants and Methods] We divided 30 healthy right-handed adults into two groups: one with high exercise image recall ability and the other with low exercise image recall ability.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important protozoan pathogen that infects many wild and domestic animals and causes infections in immunocompromised humans. However, there has been little investigation of the molecular evolutionary trajectories of this pathogenic protozoa using comparative genomics data. Here, we employed a comparative evolutionary genomics approach to identify genes that are under site- and lineage-specific positive selection in nine strains of T.
