There is growing interest in lifestyle interventions as stand-alone and add-on therapies in mental health care due to their potential benefits for both physical and mental health outcomes. We evaluated lifestyle interventions focusing on physical activity, diet, and sleep in adults with severe mental illness (SMI) and the evidence for their effectiveness. To this end, we conducted a meta-review and searched major electronic databases for articles published prior to 09/2022 and updated our search in 03/2024.

A pain research strategy for Europe: A European survey and position paper of the European Pain Federation EFIC.

Background: Pain is the leading cause of disability and reduced quality of life worldwide. Despite the increasing burden for patients and healthcare systems, pain research remains underfunded and under focused. Having stakeholders identify and prioritize areas that need urgent attention in the field will help focus funding topics, reduce 'research waste', improve the effectiveness of pain research and therapy and promote the uptake of research evidence.

There is a strong interest in itaconic acid in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors, both as an anti-bacterial compound and as an immunoregulator in mammalian macrophages. Fungal hosts also produce itaconic acid, and in addition they can produce two derivatives 2-hydroxyparaconic and itatartaric acid. Not much is known about these two derivatives, while their structural analogy to itaconate could open up several applications.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a highly fatal and morbid disease. Despite successful coiling or clipping of a ruptured aneurysm, the patients suffer post-aSAH complications, including early brain injury, cerebral vasospasm (CVS), delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and systemic infections that mainly determine the clinical outcomes. Diagnostic biomarkers to predict accurately post-aSAH complications are needed.

High interobserver variability of PTEN immunohistochemistry defining PTEN status in low- to intermediate-risk prostate cancer: results of the first German ring trial.

The prognostication of individual disease trajectory and selection of optimal therapy in patients with localized, low-grade prostate cancer often presents significant difficulty. The phosphatase and tensin homolog on chromosome 10 (PTEN) has emerged as a potential novel biomarker in this clinical context, based on its demonstrated prognostic significance in multiple retrospective studies. Incorporation into standard clinical practice necessitates exceptional diagnostic accuracy, and PTEN's binary readout-retention or loss-suggests its suitability as a biomarker.

Aims: Mutations affecting exon 3 of the β-catenin () gene result in constitutive activation of WNT signalling and are a diagnostic hallmark of several tumour entities including desmoid-type fibromatosis. They also define clinically relevant tumour subtypes within certain entities, such as endometrioid carcinoma. In diagnostics, β-catenin immunohistochemistry is widely used as a surrogate for mutations.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the main causes for end-stage heart failure. Until the transplantation, left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) have become an established treatment. We report a case of a 66-year-old patient with ischemic and DCM and suspected aortic ulcer formation.

Validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Düsseldorf orthorexia scale (TR-DOS) and the prevalence of orthorexia nervosa among Turkish university students.

Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is characterized by an excessive preoccupation with healthy foods accompanied by the avoidance of self-declared unhealthy options, yet it remains unrecognized in major diagnostic guidelines. The Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale (DOS), a 10-item self-report questionnaire using a four-point Likert scale, assesses the obsession with healthy eating. This study evaluates the reliability and validity of the TR-DOS in the Turkish context and estimates the prevalence of ON among university students.

Iron overload in acquired sideroblastic anemias and MDS: pathophysiology and role of chelation and luspatercept.

Besides transfusion therapy, ineffective erythropoiesis contributes to systemic iron overload in myelodysplastic syndromes with ring sideroblasts (MDS-RS) via erythroferrone-induced suppression of hepcidin synthesis in the liver, leading to increased intestinal iron absorption. The underlying pathophysiology of MDS-RS, characterized by disturbed heme synthesis and mitochondrial iron accumulation, is less well understood. Several lines of evidence indicate that the mitochondrial transporter ABCB7 is critically involved.

Cold acclimation with shivering improves metabolic health in adults with overweight or obesity.

Cold acclimation increases insulin sensitivity, and some level of muscle contraction appears to be needed for provoking this effect. Here 15 men and (postmenopausal) women with overweight or obesity, the majority of whom had impaired glucose tolerance, were intermittently exposed to cold to induce 1 h of shivering per day over 10 days. We determined the effect of cold acclimation with shivering on overnight fasted oral glucose tolerance (primary outcome) and on skeletal muscle glucose transporter 4 translocation (secondary outcome).

Resilient plants, sustainable future.

The accelerated pace of climate change over the past several years should serve as a wake-up call for all scientists, farmers, and decision makers, as it severely threatens our food supply and could result in famine, migration, war, and an overall destabilization of our society. Rapid and significant changes are therefore needed in the way we conduct research on plant resilience, develop new crop varieties, and cultivate those crops in our agricultural systems. Here, we describe the main bottlenecks for these processes and outline a set of key recommendations on how to accelerate research in this critical area for our society.

Purpose: To characterize the diffusion time (Δ) dependence of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and intravoxel incoherent motion-related parameters in the human kidney at 3 T.

Methods: Sixteen healthy volunteers underwent an MRI examination at 3 T including diffusion-weighted imaging at different Δ ranging from 24.1 to 104.

In order to bring stimuli of interest into our central field of vision, we perform saccadic eye movements. After every saccade, the error between the predicted and actual landing position is monitored. In the laboratory, artificial post-saccadic errors are created by displacing the target during saccade execution.

Background: To investigate the association between the development of incident interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the disease activity of RA with its various components, especially C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).

Methods: We analysed data from RA patients, observed in the German biologics register RABBIT between 2001 and 2021. In a nested case-control study, patients with a reported incident ILD diagnosis during follow-up were matched 1:5 to patients without ILD.

Background: The microbiome greatly affects health and wellbeing. Evolutionarily, it is doubtful that a host would rely on chance alone to pass on microbial colonization to its offspring. However, the literature currently offers only limited evidence regarding two alternative hypotheses: active microbial shaping by host genetic factors or transmission of a microbial maternal legacy.

Challenges of modern work environments and means of overcoming them in the context of psychosocial risk assessments.

Background: Modern work environments constitute an underrepresented part of psychosocial risk assessments at work. Little is known about whether there is an increased stress load at all and what possible improvements could be made in such a case.

Methods: Modern work environments were assessed in an online questionnaire in 33 companies across a period of more than 4 years.

The human genome is packaged within a three-dimensional (3D) nucleus and organized into structural units known as compartments, topologically associating domains (TADs), and loops. TAD boundaries, separating adjacent TADs, have been found to be well conserved across mammalian species and more evolutionarily constrained than TADs themselves. Recent studies show that structural variants (SVs) can modify 3D genomes through the disruption of TADs, which play an essential role in insulating genes from outside regulatory elements' aberrant regulation.

Background And Purpose: Flow diversion has become a key treatment option for complex intracranial aneurysms. Recent advancements include coated flow diverters (FDs), designed to potentially reduce the need for dual antiplatelet therapy, thereby removing the associated secondary risks while maintaining patency and low complication rates. Comparing coated and uncoated FDs may offer insights into long-term outcomes and treatment optimization.
