Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of hematopoietic disorders characterized by dysplasia, ineffective hematopoiesis, and predisposition to secondary acute myeloid leukemias (sAML). Azacitidine (AZA) is the standard care for high-risk MDS patients not eligible for allogenic bone marrow transplantation. However, only half of the patients respond to AZA and eventually all patients relapse.

Article Synopsis
  • Myelodysplastic/Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPNs) are a group of illnesses affecting blood cells that have some similar traits, but are also quite different.
  • The main disease in this group is chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), which is more common than the others, like atypical chronic myeloid leukemia and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia.
  • Diagnosing these diseases can be tricky because doctors have to look at cell shapes and features, and the review talks about important information on how to recognize and understand these blood disorders.

Background Optimizing risk stratification in patients undergoing transcatheter mitral valve repair is an ongoing challenge. The Mitral Regurgitation International Database (MIDA) score represents a user-friendly mortality risk stratification tool that is validated on a large-scale registry of patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR). We here assessed the potential benefit of the MIDA risk score for patients with functional or degenerative MR undergoing transcatheter mitral valve repair.

ISS alone, is not sufficient to correctly assign patients post hoc to trauma team requirement.

Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg

February 2022

Institut für Forschung in der Operativen Medizin (IFOM), Abteilung Statistik und Registerforschung, Universität Witten/Herdecke, Ostmerheimer Str.200, Haus 38, 51109, Cologne, Germany.

Purpose: An injury severity score (ISS) ≥ 16 alone, is commonly used post hoc to define the correct activation of a trauma team. However, abnormal vital functions and the requirement of life-saving procedures may also have a role in defining trauma team requirement post hoc. The aim of this study was to describe their prevalence and mortality in severely injured patients and to estimate their potential additional value in the definition of trauma team requirement as compared to the definition based on ISS alone.

Loosening of total knee arthroplasty - always aseptic?

J Clin Orthop Trauma

March 2020

Department of Trauma and Handsurgery, Heinrich Heine University Hospital Duesseldorf, Moorenstr. 5, 40225, Duesseldorf, Germany.

Purpose: When revision surgery is needed in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) the most frequent reasons are aseptic loosening (AL) and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). However preoperative distinction between AL and PJI remains challenging. Aim of this study is to determine the incidence of PJI in patients with suspected AL after TKA and to evaluate a diagnostic algorithm for reliable differential diagnosis.

Bone defects remain a challenge for patients and orthopaedic surgeons. Autologous transfer of cancellous bone grafts remains the standard of care. However, in recent years various osteoinductive substitute materials, such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) have been shown to improve bone healing.

Purpose/objective(s): Intensification of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for head-and-neck cancer (HNC) may lead to increased rates of long term dysphagia as a severe side effect. Mucositis and consequent swallowing problems require artificial nutrition in many HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiation. It is unknown, which predict factors for prophylactic PEG tube insertion appear useful.

October 2015

Vivantes Klinikum Am Urban, Department of Trauma, Orthopedics and Handsurgery, Berlin, Germany.

In minipigs little is known about the concentration of growth factors in plasma, despite their major role in several patho-physiological processes such as healing of fractures. This prompted us to study the concentration of platelets and selected growth factors in plasma and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) preparation of sixteen Goettingen minipigs. Platelet concentrations increased significantly in PRP in comparison to native blood plasma.

Donors with malignancies-risk or chance?

Transplant Proc

January 2013

Department of Urology, Heinrich Heine University Hospital Duesseldorf, Germany.

The disparity between organ demand and organ supply in renal transplantation has led transplant physicians to pursue a variety of options for increasing the number of donor kidneys. One option is to use kidneys from living or deceased donors who have been diagnosed with a malignant tumor, either of the kidney itself or of other origin. Today, there is an increasing body of evidence in favor of accepting kidneys from donors with renal or ureteral malignancy.
