The rational utilization of crop straw as a raw material for natural gas production is of economic significance. In order to increase the efficiency of biogas production from agricultural straw, seasonal restrictions must be overcome. Therefore, the potential for biogas production via anaerobic straw digestion was assessed by exposing fresh, silage, and dry yellow corn straw to cow dung liquid extract as a nitrogen source.

LBP-4a improves insulin resistance via translocation and activation of GLUT4 in OLETF rats.

Food Funct

April 2014

Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, College of Life Science & Biotechnology, Heilongjiang August First Land Reclamation University, Daqing High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, 163319, P. R. China.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) has been shown to ameliorate insulin resistance, but the identification of compounds from LBP and the mechanisms have not been clarified. In this study, LBP-4a was purified from Lycium barbarum by DEAE cellulose and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography, and the effects of LBP-4a on insulin resistance were investigated. The results indicated that LBP-4a caused translocation of the glucose transporter isoform 4 (GLUT4) to the cell surface, which in turn stimulated glucose uptake, and the effect was sensitive to wortmannin, an inhibitor of phosphoinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K), and SB203580, an inhibitor of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK (α, β)).

Matrine, one of the main active components extracted from dry roots of Sophora flavescens Ait (Leguminosae), has been reported to have anticancer effects on a number of cancer cell lines, but the anticancer mechanism of matrine remains elusive. This study shows that matrine also displays anticancer activity on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. In this work, the optimal cultivation condition for HepG2 cells was determined using the combinatorial orthogonal test design [L18 (21 x 37)].

Diazotrophs diversity in soybean is a topic requiring thorough investigation since the previous researches have focused on only rice, forest, grass, water, etc. In this research, iron-only nitrogenase nifH gene was as genetic marker. PCR-RFLP was used to investigate the difference of diazotrophs community diversity in the soil from the continuous cropping (CC) (the 5-yr tilling of soybean) and the rotational cropping (RC) (soybean-corn) soils in the northeast of China.

Background: In this article, I propose a model-selection-free method to map multiple quantitative trait loci (QTL) in variance component model, which is useful in outbred populations. The new method can estimate the variance of zero-effect QTL infinitely to zero, but nearly unbiased for non-zero-effect QTL. It is analogous to Xu's Bayesian shrinkage estimation method, but his method is based on allelic substitution model, while the new method is based on the variance component models.

Protective effect of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide 4 on kidneys in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Can J Physiol Pharmacol

Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, College of Life Science and Biotechnology, Heilongjiang August First Land Reclamation University, Daqing High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, 163319, P. R. China.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) has been shown to have hypoglycemic and antioxidative properties, although its mode of action is yet unknown. Because oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy, we evaluated the protective effect of LBP-4, the major active component of Lycium barbarum, on the defensive antioxidative mechanism in kidneys in a streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model. Moreover, we investigated the effects of LBP-4 on the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) in isolated mesangial cells.

College of Animal Science and Technology, Heilongjiang August First Land Reclamation University, Daqing High-tech Industrial Development Zone, Daqing, 163319, People's Republic of China.

To analyze immunodominant regions of leukotoxin protein of Fusobacterium necrophorum strain H05, a series of truncated forms of leukotoxin gene were expressed in Escherichia coli using the vector pGEX-6p-1 or pPROEX HTa. The results of SDS-PAGE showed the truncated forms PL1, PL2, PL4, and PL5 were expressed in Escherichia coli using the vector pGEX-6p-1, and the truncated forms PL3 was expressed in Escherichia coli using the vector pPROEX HTa. These recombinant proteins were able to react with antisera against Fusobacterium necrophorum strain A25.
