Hydrogen sulfide (HS), a ubiquitous small gaseous signaling molecule, plays a critical role in various diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ischemic stroke, and myocardial infarction (MI) reducing inflammation, inhibiting oxidative stress, and cell apoptosis. Uncontrolled inflammation is closely related to pathological process of ischemic stroke, RA, MI, and IBD. Solid evidence has revealed the axes between gut and other organs like joint, brain, and heart, and indicated that HS-mediated anti-inflammatory effect against IBD, RA, MI, and ischemic stroke might be related to regulating the functions of axes between gut and other organs.

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) is comprised of brain microvascular endothelial cells (ECs), astrocytes, perivascular microglia, pericytes, neuronal processes, and the basal lamina. As a complex and dynamic interface between the blood and the central nervous system (CNS), BBB is responsible for transporting nutrients essential for the normal metabolism of brain cells and hinders many toxic compounds entering into the CNS. The loss of BBB integrity following stroke induces tissue damage, inflammation, edema, and neural dysfunction.

Ischemic stroke is one of the main reasons of disability and death. Stroke-induced functional deficits are mainly due to the secondary degeneration of the white matter characterized by axonal demyelination and injury of axon-glial integrity. Enhancement of the axonal regeneration and remyelination could promote the neural functional recovery.

Water electrolysis represented a promising avenue for the large-scale production of high-purity hydrogen. However, the high overpotential and sluggish reaction rates associated with the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) posed significant obstacles to efficient water splitting. To tackle these challenges, the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) emerged as a more favorable thermodynamic alternative to OER, offering both the energy-efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the potential for the treating of urea-rich wastewater.

Designing high-activity electrocatalysts to enhance the slow multielectron-transfer process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for hydrogen generation. Here, we employ hydrothermal and subsequent heat-treatment strategies to acquire nanoarrays-structured NiO/NiCoO heterojunction anchored Ni foam (NiO/NiCoO/NF) as efficient materials for catalyzing the OER in an alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) results demonstrate that NiO/NiCoO/NF exhibits a smaller overpotential than those of single NiO/NF and NiCoO/NF owing to interface-triggered numerous interface charge transfer.

Electrochemical water splitting is a potential green hydrogen energy generation technique. With the shortage of fresh water, abundant seawater resources should be developed as the main raw material for water electrolysis. However, since the precipitation reaction of chloride ions in seawater will compete with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and corrode the catalyst, seawater electrolysis is restricted by the decrease in activity, low stability, and selectivity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFHeteroatom-doped porous carbon materials have been widely used as anode materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries, however, improving the specific capacity and long-term cycling stability of ion batteries remains a major challenge. Here, we report a facile based metal-organic framework (MOFs) strategy to synthesize nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers (NCNFs) with a large number of interconnected channels that can increase the contact area between the material and the electrolyte, shorten the diffusion distance between Li/Na and the electrolyte, and relieve the volume expansion of the electrode material during cycling; the doping of nitrogen atoms can improve the conductivity and increase the active sites of the carbon material, can also affect the microstructure and electron distribution of the electrode material, thereby improving the electrochemical performance of the material. As expected, the obtained NCNFs-800 exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with high reversible capacity (for Li battery anodes: 1237 mA h g at 100 mA g after 200 cycles, for Na battery anodes: 323 mA h g at 100 mA g after 150 cycles) and long-term cycling stability (for Li battery anodes: 635 mA h g at 2 A g after 5000 cycles, for Na battery anodes: 194 mA h g at 2 A g after 5000 cycles).

As an ideal anti-inflammatory target, cyclin-dependent kinase 8 (CDK8) has gradually attracted the attention of researchers. CDK8 inhibition up-regulates Interleukin-10 (IL-10) expression by enhancing the transcriptional activity of activator protein-1 (AP-1), and augmenting IL-10 abundance is a viable strategy for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this research, through structure-based drug design and dominant fragment hybridization, a series of poly-substituted pyridine derivatives were designed and synthesized as CDK8 inhibitors.

Ischemic stroke is one of major causes of disability. In the pathological process of ischemic stroke, the up-regulation of Ras homolog gene family, member A (RhoA) and its downstream effector, Ras homolog gene family (Rho)-associated coiled coil-containing kinase (ROCK), contribute to the neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction, neuronal apoptosis, axon growth inhibition and astrogliosis. Accumulating evidences have revealed that hydrogen sulphide (HS) could reduce brain injury in animal model of ischemic stroke via inhibiting the RhoA/ROCK pathway.
