November 2024

Functional Explorations Department, Habib Bourguiba Hospital, Sfax Tunisia; LR19ES15, Medical School, University of Sfax, Tunisia. Electronic address:

Objective: The pathophysiology of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) implicates autonomic dysregulation of the lower esophageal sphincter tone. Our goal is to investigate whether this dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) function observed in isolated GERD cases can affect other systems, such as cardiovascular regulation.

Methods: Twenty-five participants were included in the study, 11 patients with isolated GERD and 14 controls.

In this prospective randomised controlled trial, we compared the impact of the lateral versus supine position for tracheal extubation among infants aged two months to two years after intraabdominal surgery on the incidence of respiratory adverse events that may occur after extubation. The anaesthesia protocol was standardised. Among the 120 infants included (60 in each group), the demographic and perioperative data were comparable between both groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to identify key factors affecting the success of returning to work (RTW) after occupational injuries among Tunisian workers.
  • It involved a survey of 199 injured workers, revealing that 39.7% struggled with RTW, with low social support and higher biomechanical exposure being critical issues.
  • The findings highlight that inadequate social support at work is the most significant risk factor for unsuccessful RTW, alongside factors like job repetitiveness and the physical effort required.

This paper aimed to describe another form of aggressive limited Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) revealed by dacryoadenitis. We report an unusually limited GPA in a 48-year-old man presenting with bilateral proptosis. She had never presented kidney or pulmonary manifestations, but her disease was persistently active including oto-rhino-laryngological manifestations, dacryoadenitis, and neurological manifestations unresponsive to corticosteroids and immunosuppressors.

Unlabelled: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an hyperinflammatory state resulting from increased secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, which are responsible for clinical, biological and cytological manifestations.

Objective: The aim of our study is to describe the epidemiological, clinical, biological, etiological and evolutionary profile of HLH in Tunisia.

Methods: A retrospective study that involved patients, with images of hemophagocytosis in myelograms analyzed at the laboratory of biological hematology of the University Hospital "Hédi-Chaker" of Sfax-Tunisia, followed at these departments: hematology, internal medicine, department of infectious-diseases and department of gastroenterology, (June2017- May2021).

This study aimed to uncover novel genes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) by leveraging recent large-scale de novo burden analysis studies to enhance a virtual gene panel used in a diagnostic setting. We re-analyzed historical trio-exome sequencing data from 745 individuals with NDD according to the most recent diagnostic standards, resulting in a cohort of 567 unsolved individuals. Next, we designed a virtual gene panel containing candidate genes from three large de novo burden analysis studies in NDD and prioritized candidate genes by stringent filtering for ultra-rare de novo variants with high pathogenicity scores.

Exploring the role of vitamin D-VDR pathway in pemphigus foliaceous: a novel perspective on disease pathogenesis.

Arch Dermatol Res

July 2024

Research Laboratory LR18/SP12 Auto-Immunity, Cancer and Immunogenetics, Immunology Department, Habib Bourguiba Hospital, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia.

Several auto-immune diseases have been linked to vitamin D deficiency as a contributing environmental factor. Its pleiotropic effects on the immune system, especially its essential role in maintaining immune tolerance, make the vitamin D pathway of great interest. In this study, we focused on Pemphigus foliaceous (PF) in Tunisian population.

Objective: Surgery is the mainstay of hepatic cystic echinococcosis (HCE). The conservative surgery of HCE carries a non-negligible risk of recurrence and significant morbidity, dominated by Deep Surgical Site Infections (DSSI). To address these issues, we have improved and standardized this technique, which could reduce complications and achieve better postoperative outcomes.

Background: T helper interplay and cytokines monitoring in auto-immune skin disorders such as Pemphigus Foliaceus [PF] may play a central role in predicting the clinical stratification of the pathology.

Objectives: In order to assess the CD4+ T cell imbalance, [i] this study aims to assess the related immune cells [Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg cells] as well as the related cytokines [IL-1β, IFNγ, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-17A, IL-17F, IL- 22, TNF-β, and TNFα] in peripheral blood, and [ii] their respective transcription factors in the lesioned skin of PF endemic patients during the clinical course.

Methods: Peripheral blood of 22 PF patients was analyzed by flow cytometry to assess the functional associations of Th cell subpopulations and their characteristic cytokines by multiplex bead assay of 14-plex cytokines.
