While current diagnostic methods are mainly based on polymerase chain reaction, they suffer from insensitivity. Therefore, antibody-based serologic tests are being developed to achieve higher sensitivity and specificity.

The diagnosis and treatment of brain abscesses have advanced due to the utilization of modern microbiological and neurosurgical methods. Here we present a 49-year-old female patient presented with headache and neurological symptoms. Initial evaluation revealed multiple ring-enhanced brain lesions and a lung cavitary lesion initially suspected to represent a malignant process.

Pancreatitis, in both acute and chronic forms, poses a major therapeutic challenge and is associated with great morbidity and several complications. The nature of pancreatic injury in chronic pancreatitis (CP) and the wide range of causative processes that lead to CP have made effective therapy a true unmet need. Multiple physiological, genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors contribute to the development of CP.

Background: Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon benign epithelial lesion which mainly appears in inflamed oral epithelium. In this study, our aim was to present new cases of oral VX (OVX) in chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) and review the literature.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of cGVHD patients (2012-2019) to reveal cases of OVX.

Follicular fluid (FF) constitutes the microenvironment of the developing oocyte. We recently characterized its lipid composition and found lipid signatures of positive pregnancy outcome after in vitro fertilization (IVF). In the current study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that unexplained female infertility is related to lipid metabolism, given the lipid signature of positive-outcome IVF patients we previously found.

Adropin is a peptide hormone, which plays a role in energy homeostasis and controls glucose and fatty acid metabolism. Its levels correlate with changes in carbohydrate-lipid metabolism, metabolic diseases, central nervous system function, endothelial function and cardiovascular disease. Both metabolic pathways and adropin are regulated by the circadian clocks.

Unlabelled: Knowledge of the outcomes of critically ill patients is crucial for health and government officials who are planning how to address local outbreaks. The factors associated with outcomes of critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) who required treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU) are yet to be determined.
Methods: This was a retrospective registry-based case series of patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 who were referred for ICU admission and treated in the ICUs of the 13 participating centers in Israel between 5 March and 27 April 2020.

During the metastasis process, tumor cells invade the blood circulatory system directly from venous capillaries or indirectly via lymphatic vessels. Understanding the relative contribution of each pathway and identifying the molecular targets that affect both processes is critical for reducing cancer spread. Methionine aminopeptidase 2 (MetAp2) is an intracellular enzyme known to modulate angiogenesis.

Chronic administration of drugs leads to the activation of compensatory mechanisms that may inhibit some of their activity and induce unwanted toxicity. These mechanisms are an obstacle for maintaining a sustainable effect for many chronic medications. Pathways that adapt to the burden induced by chronic drugs, whether or not related to the underlying disease, can lead to a partial or complete loss of effect.

Despite progress in the development of anti-seizure drugs, drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) occurs in a third of patients. DRE is associated with poor quality of life and increased risk of sudden, unexplained death. The autonomic nervous system and chronobiology play a role in DRE.

Purpose: To characterise pain from medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) and the effects of antimicrobial treatment on it.
Methods: Data from files of patients diagnosed with MRONJ according to the position paper of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (2014) and Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer and American Society of Clinical Oncology (2019) were collected retrospectively, including gender, age, primary disease, bone-modifying agents (BMAs)/anti-angiogenics, administration route, involved jaw, location, and exposure size. The patients were treated according to the abovementioned position papers' recommendations, i.

Background: Unintentional extension of uterine incision is a known complication during cesarean delivery estimated to occur in 4-8% of cesarean deliveries. The aim of this study was to examine risk factors associated with unintentional uterine incision extension and to assess which of them are independent risk factors for this condition.
Study Design: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a large public university tertiary referral center between 2003 and 2017.

Failure to attend hospital appointments has a detrimental impact on care quality. Documented efforts to address this challenge have only modestly decreased no-show rates. Behavioral economics theory has suggested that more effective messages may lead to increased responsiveness.

The ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, and it has created a pressing global need for effective antiviral therapies against it. COVID-19 disease pathogenesis is characterized by an initial virus-mediated phase, followed by inappropriate hyperactivation of the immune system leading to organ damage. Targeting of the SARS-CoV-2 viral receptors is being explored as a therapeutic option for these patients.

Unlike epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs) that originate from embryonic precursors and are self-renewed locally, mucosal LCs arise and are replaced by circulating bone marrow (BM) precursors throughout life. While the unique lifecycle of epidermal LCs is associated with an age-dependent decrease in their numbers, whether and how aging has an impact on mucosal LCs remains unclear. Focusing on gingival LCs we found that mucosal LCs are reduced with age but exhibit altered morphology with that observed in aged epidermal LCs.

Oral mucosal homeostasis is achieved by complex immunologic mechanisms, orchestrating host immunity to adapt to the physiologic functions of the various specialized niches in the oral cavity. Dental implants introduce a novel mucosal niche to the immune system to deal with. Nevertheless, the immune mechanisms engaged toward implants and whether they have broader effects are not well defined.

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), known in the past as "Microwave syndrome", is a clinical syndrome characterized by the presence of a wide spectrum of non-specific multiple organ symptoms, typically including central nervous system symptoms, that occur following the patient's acute or chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields in the environment or in occupational settings. Numerous studies have shown biological effects at the cellular level of electromagnetic fields (EMF) at magnetic (ELF) and radio-frequency (RF) frequencies in extremely low intensities. Many of the mechanisms described for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) apply with modification to EHS.
