Purpose: Diffusing alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy ("Alpha DaRT") is a new cancer treatment modality that employs radium-224-loaded metal sources implanted in solid tumors to disperse alpha-emitting atoms within a therapeutic "kill-zone" of a few millimeters around each source. Preclinical studies have demonstrated tumor growth delay in various cancer types, including glioblastoma multiforme, and the method is used in clinical trials for patients with skin and head and neck cancer. This study aims to assess the safety and feasibility of implementing Alpha DaRT for brain tumor treatment in a large animal model.

Issues Concerning the Mechanisms of Bone Conduction.

Audiol Res

September 2024

Department of Medical Neurobiology (Physiology), Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem 91120, Israel.

Air and bone conduction thresholds are used to differentiate between conductive and sensori-neural hearing losses because bone conduction is thought to bypass the conductive apparatus, directly activating the inner ear. However, the suggested bone conduction mechanisms involve the outer and middle ears. Also, normal bone conduction thresholds have been reported in cases of lesions to the conduction pathway.

Considering ivermectin for treatment of schistosomiasis.

Parasitol Res

April 2024

Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Because of recent reports of praziquantel resistance in schistosome infections, there have been suggestions to employ ivermectin as a possible alternative, especially as its chemical composition is different from that of praziquantel, so cross-resistance is not expected. In order to ascertain possible damage and elimination of worms, we used ivermectin by oral gavage in infected mice, at a high dose (30.1 mg/kg, bordering toxicity).

The management of patients with pre-existing temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) undergoing orthognathic surgery remains a subject of ongoing debate. This study aimed to profile these individuals and evaluate the correlation between orthognathic surgery and alterations in TMD indicators and symptoms. We conducted a retrospective cohort investigation involving patients with skeletal malocclusion and established TMDs.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammation is linked to dysmetabolism, and a study on transgenic mice (Def) shows that the neutrophilic peptide alpha defensin can contribute to atherosclerosis despite normal cholesterol and glucose levels.
  • The study involved various assessments (metabolic, biochemical, pathological) that revealed that Def mice had lower energy expenditure and carbohydrate utilization, but higher fat oxidation, alongside abnormal levels of glucagon and other metabolites.
  • The findings suggest that alpha defensin leads to hypoglucagonemia, increased fat breakdown, reduced glucose oxidation, and could serve as a model for exploring the connection between inflammation and metabolic health in atherosclerosis.

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous group of tumors which lack estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2 expression. Targeted therapies have limited success in treating TNBC, thus a strategy enabling effective targeted combinations is an unmet need. To tackle these challenges and discover individualized targeted combination therapies for TNBC, we integrated phosphoproteomic analysis of altered signaling networks with patient-specific signaling signature (PaSSS) analysis using an information-theoretic, thermodynamic-based approach.

  • Scientists are looking for better ways to detect pancreatic cancer early so it can be treated more effectively.
  • They studied blood samples from 426 patients to find different markers that could indicate pancreatic cancer compared to other conditions.
  • Results showed that a mix of certain protein markers and DNA changes in the blood can help identify early-stage pancreatic cancer better than just using one marker alone.

Employing new therapeutic indications for drugs that are already approved for human use has obvious advantages, including reduced costs and timelines, because some routine steps of drug development and regulation are not required. This work concentrates on the redirection of artemisinins (ARTS) that already are approved for clinical use, or investigated, for malaria treatment. Several mechanisms of action are suggested for ARTS, among which only a few have been successfully examined in vivo, mainly the induction of oxidant stress and anti-inflammatory effects.

The association between emotion regulation and pain during the immediate postpartum period.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

August 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Soroka University Medical Center, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel.

Purpose: The present study aims to investigate the association between emotion regulation difficulties and pain perception during the immediate postpartum period.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in women during the immediate postpartum period. Women completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) questionnaire to measure difficulties in emotion regulation.

Cancer somatic mutations are the product of multiple mutational and repair processes, some of which are tightly associated with DNA replication. Mutation rates (MR) are known to be higher in late replication timing (RT) regions, but different processes can affect this association. Systematic analysis of the mutational landscape of 2787 tumors from 32 tumor types revealed that approximately one third of the tumor samples show weak association between replication timing and mutation rate.

Background And Objectives: IV thrombolysis (IVT) for suspected ischemic stroke in patients with intracranial neoplasms is off-label. However, data on risks of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) are scarce.

Methods: In a multicenter registry-based analysis within the European Thrombolysis in Ischemic Stroke Patients (TRISP) collaboration, we assessed frequencies of symptomatic and fatal ICH after IVT for suspected ischemic stroke in patients with intracranial tumors by descriptive statistics and analyzed associations with clinical and imaging characteristics by binary logistic regression.

Background: Treatment of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains a significant challenge in the face of increased worldwide morbidity and mortality. The acute illness caused by SARS-CoV-2 is initiated by a viral phase, followed by an inflammatory phase. Numerous anti-inflammatory and anti-viral therapies, with a relatively minor clinical effect, have been applied.

Background: Inhibitory control (IC) deficits have been proposed as a potential risk factor for depression. However, little is known about the intra-individual daily fluctuations in IC, and its relationship to mood and depressive symptoms. Here, we examined the everyday association between IC and mood, in typical adults with various levels of depressive symptoms.

Challenges and obstacles implementing evidence-based food fortification policy in a high-income country.

Front Public Health

April 2023

The School of Nutritional Sciences and Institute of Biochemistry Food and Nutrition Science, The Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes food fortification as one of the most cost-effective and beneficial public health measures available. Mass fortification policies and regulations can reduce health disparities, including in high-income countries, by improving micronutrient intake among food-insecure or high-risk populations without changing their diet or behavior. While international health organizations have traditionally prioritized technical assistance and grants to medium and low-income countries, it is important to recognize that micronutrient deficiencies may also pose an important yet underappreciated public health problem in many high-income countries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated cemiplimab, a PD-1 inhibitor, for treating cutaneous periocular-locally-advanced squamous-cell-carcinoma (POLA-SCC) with orbital invasion.
  • Conducted at four medical centers between 2019-2022, it analyzed 13 patients with biopsy-confirmed POLA-SCC and found a 69.2% overall response rate.
  • Results showed that a significant portion of patients achieved complete responses, and none required orbital exenteration, suggesting cemiplimab may be a promising treatment option for this condition.
