Huoxue-Tongluo-Lishui-Decoction is visual-protective against retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Biomed Pharmacother

May 2020

Hebei Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Hebei Provincial Eye Institute, Hebei Provincial Eye Hospital, Xingtai, Hebei, 054001, China.

Retinal ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) is a leading cause of visual impairment or blindness, and an effective way to prevent the visual loss needs to be developed. Although decades of clinical application of Huoxue-Tongluo-Lishui-Decoction (HTLD) has demonstrated its reliable clinical efficacy against retinal IRI, no convincing randomized controlled trials were conducted in humans or animals, and the associated mechanism still needs to be explored. To confirm the protective effect of HTLD against retinal IRI and to explore its underlying mechanisms, a standard retinal IRI animal model, randomized controlled trials, objective evaluation and examination methods were adopted in this study.

Ocular trauma is a major cause of monocular blindness worldwide. Vitrectomy at correct timing can significantly improve the efficacy and prognosis, but the timing of vitrectomy has remained highly controversial for decades. Trauma cases are different from each other, thus, a flexible timing system based on the details of each individual case is recommended.

Aim: To analyse the impact of ultrasound and optical intraocular lens (IOL) calculation methods on refractive outcomes of cataract phacoemulsification performed after penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in keratoconus.

Methods: Phacoemulsification cataract surgery was performed on 42 eyes of 34 patients with keratoconus who had previously undergone PK. The IOL power was determined by using both standard and corneal topography-derived keratometry using the SRK/T formula.

Aim: The comparative analysis of the central and peripheral corneal thicknesses using two different imaging systems: Scheimpflug camera and swept-source OCT was performed to investigate the differences in corneal thickness analysis in diabetic patients.

Materials And Methods: The study group consisted of the 147 eyes of 107 diabetic patients who were examined and compared with 138 eyes of 89 nondiabetic cataract patients. The inclusion criteria for the study group was diabetes mellitus type II identified no less than 10 years ago, with NPDR not requiring prior laser treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed the outcomes of intravitreal injections of ranibizumab in 103 patients undergoing pars plana vitrectomy for diabetic vitreous hemorrhage.
  • Patients who received ranibizumab had a significantly lower rate of recurrent hemorrhage (6.1%) compared to the control group (24.3%), and better visual acuity at the 6-month follow-up.
  • The study concludes that ranibizumab is effective in preventing postoperative complications without affecting intraocular pressure.

Vitrectomy combined with internal limiting membrane peeling (ILMP) treats high myopic foveoschisis with good results, but there is a risk of iatrogenic macular holes, which may be reduced by preserving the internal limiting membrane of the central fovea. This study compared complete ILMP with partial ILMP, both combined with 25G vitrectomy, for the treatment of high myopic foveoschisis.Thirty-three cases (33 eyes) of high myopic foveoschisis were retrospectively analyzed.

Comparison of the Techniques of Secondary Intraocular Lens Implantation after Penetrating Keratoplasty.

J Ophthalmol

September 2018

Chair and Clinical Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine with the Division of Dentistry in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Panewnicka 65 St., 40-760 Katowice, Poland.

Aim: To conduct a retrospective analysis of secondary IOL implantation in patients who underwent PK with no simultaneous IOL implantation.

Materials And Methods: The retrospective study of the secondary implantation of IOLs was conducted in 46 eyes that underwent a primary operation with PK and cataract/lens extraction with no IOL implantation due to capsule rupture or combining corneal or intraocular complications. The minimum period from PK was 12 months.

Identification of Biomarkers Based on Differentially Expressed Genes in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma.

Sci Rep

July 2018

Department of Endoerinology and Metabolism, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Harbin Medical University, Harbin, 150001, China.

The incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is increasing rapidly throughout the world. Hence, there is an urgent need for identifying more specific and sensitive biomarkers to explorate the pathogenesis of PTC. In this study, three pairs of stage I PTC tissues and matched normal adjacent tissues were sequenced by RNA-Seq, and 719 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened.

Interleukin-33 promotes inflammation-induced lymphangiogenesis via ST2/TRAF6-mediated Akt/eNOS/NO signalling pathway.

Sci Rep

September 2017

Hebei Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Hebei Provincial Eye institute, Hebei Provincial Eye Hospital, Xingtai, Hebei, 054001, China.

The interplay between inflammation and lymphangiogenesis is mediated by various cytokines. However, most of these molecules and their associated mechanism are yet to be defined. Here, we explored the role of IL-33 in modulating inflammation-induced lymphangiogenesis (ILA) and its underlying mechanisms using an ILA mouse model and a lymphatic endothelial cell (LEC) line.
