Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) participate in and regulate the biological process of colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. Our previous research identified differentially expressed lncRNAs in 10 CRC tissues and 10 matched nontumor tissues by next-generation sequencing (NGS). In this study, we identified an lncRNA, FEZF1 antisense RNA 1 (FEZF1-AS1), and further explored its function and mechanism in CRC.

Chemotherapy is used as a primary approach in cancer treatment after routine surgery. However, chemo-resistance tends to occur when chemotherapy is used clinically, resulting in poor prognosis and recurrence. Currently, Chinese medicine may provide insight into the design of new therapies to overcome chemo-resistance.

Methamphetamine (METH) abuse causes serious health problems worldwide, and long-term use of METH disrupts the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Herein, we explored the potential mechanism of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in METH-induced BBB endothelial cell damage and the therapeutic potential of endoplasmic reticulum stress inhibitors for METH-induced BBB disruption in C57BL/6J mice. Exposure of immortalized BMVEC (bEnd.

Arterial baroreflex is a general mechanism maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis; its sensitivity is reduced in vascular calcification (VC). Hydrogen sulfide (HS) treatment facilitates baroreflexive sensitivity in normal and hypertensive rats. Here, we aimed to detect the effect of HS on baroreflexive sensitivity in rats with VC.

T wave oversensing (TWOS) is a major drawback of implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and data on predictors of TWOS in ICD is limited. We aimed to calculate a novel index of T wave safety margin (TWSM) and assess its potential for evaluating TWOS during the procedure of ICD implantation. Thirty-two consecutive patients with ICD implantation were enrolled.

Patients who had ACS with significant stenosis on initial coronary angiography and received successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, China from August 2015 to January 2016 were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomized to receive pitavastatin (4 mg daily) or atorvastatin (20 mg daily).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive decline of memory and cognitive functions. Deep magnetic stimulation (DMS), a noninvasive and nonpharmacological brain stimulation, has been reported to alleviate stress-related cognitive impairment in neuropsychiatric disorders. Our previous study also discovered the preventive effect of DMS on cognitive decline in an AD mouse model.

The purpose of this study was to explore the potential role of HOTAIR in thyroid cancer carcinogenesis. We found that HOTAIR was unregulated in human thyroid cancer and inversely correlated with miR-1. Functional assays indicated HOTAIR regulates miR-1 directly in thyroid cancer cells.

There is a controversy over the effects of testosterone supplements on dopaminergic function. Both neuroprotective and toxic effects of testosterone supplements are reported. The status of oxidative stress seems to explain the neuroprotective or toxic properties of testosterone.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been recently reported to be dysregulated and play a critical role in the progression of thyroid cancer. Here, we found that the lncRNA n340790 was highly expressed in human thyroid cancer tissues and was strongly correlated with the clinical characteristics of patients. There was a good prognostic value of n340790 for thyroid cancer.

Previous studies have shown that insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) may be responsible for the higher risk for developing endometrial carcinoma (EMC) in insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. However, the underlying mechanisms are not understood. Here, we compared T2DM patients with or without EMC.

Objective: Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) hold substantial promise for the treatment of ischemic neurological disease, but few clinical data are currently available about its therapeutic effects in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). This study is to evaluate the effects of hUC-MSCs transplantation on patients with HIE. Methods A total 22 patients with HIEwere randomly divided into hUC-MSCs transplantation group (n = 12) and control group (n = 10).

Background And Aims: Previous studies demonstrated that energy metabolism disturbance impairs cardiac function and chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) protects heart against ischemia/reperfusion injury. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that CIHH protects the heart against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury via improvement of cardiac glucose metabolism.
Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats received CIHH treatment simulating 5000-m altitude for 28 days, 6 h per day in a hypobaric chamber or no treatment (control).

Purpose: To elucidate the mechanisms of the immediate-early response gene 5 (IER5) effect on the apoptosis induced by irradiation and cisplatin (CDDP) in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells.
Methods: We generated IER5 overexpression stable cells (HepG2/IER5) using Lipofectamine 2000 transfection HepG2 cells. Cell apoptosis was induced by irradiation and cisplatin treatments, and cell proliferation (viability) and apoptosis were evaluated by MTT and flow cytometry assays.

Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and its ligands PD-L1 and PD-L2 play critical roles in maintaining an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. The purpose of the present study was to assess expression of PD-1, PD-L1, and PD-L2 in mouse prostate tumors. A total of 33 mouse prostate tumors derived from Pten-null mice were examined using immunohistochemical staining for PD-1, PD-L1, and PD-L2.

Levofloxacin was previously reported to induce apoptosis of rat annulus fibrosus (AF) cells by upregulating active caspase-3 and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 expression in vitro. However, the effects of levofloxacin on rat AF cells, as well as the related mechanism, have not been revealed completely. The purpose of this study was to further explore the changes in extracellular matrix and MMPs of rat AF cells based on levofloxacin-induced apoptosis.

Physical exercise is any bodily activity to enhance or maintain physical fitness and overall health and wellness. A series of associated studies have demonstrated that physical exercise could alleviate the infarct volume, increase the collateral circulation, promote endothelial progenitor cells, improve cerebral blood flow after cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In this review, we summed up the protective effects of physical exercise on cerebral blood flow (CBF), vascular endothelium, vascular vasodilation, endothelial progenitor cells and collateral circulation.

A subset of patients of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) present with mutation of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), and such mutants caused an ALS- like disorder when expressed in rodents. These findings implicated SOD1 in ALS pathogenesis and made the transgenic animals a widely used ALS model. However, previous studies of these animals have focused largely on motor neuron damage.
