Background: microRNAs (miRNAs) have drawn more attention to the progression of atherosclerosis (AS), due to their noticeable inflammation function in cardiovascular disease. Macrophages play a crucial role in disrupting atherosclerotic plaque, thereby we explored the involvement of miR-223-3p in the inflammatory response in macrophages.

Methods: RT-qPCR was used to analyze the miR-223-3p levels in carotid arteries and serum of AS patients.

Background: Previous cluster-randomized controlled trials evaluating the impact of implementing evidence-based guidelines for nutrition therapy in critical illness do not consistently demonstrate patient benefits. A large-scale, sufficiently powered study is therefore warranted to ascertain the effects of guideline implementation on patient-centered outcomes.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter, cluster-randomized, parallel-controlled trial in intensive care units (ICUs) across China.

Background: Studies have shown that cervical carcinoma high-expressed long non-coding RNA 1 () may promote tumor development by regulating tumor migration and invasion in a variety of cancers; yet, the role of in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the mechanism of in PTC.

Methods: The expression of in 51 PTC carcinoma tissues and normal adjacent tissues was measured using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR).

is a traditional Chinese medicine and has been used for adjuvant clinical therapy for a variety of cancers. However, the mechanism of its action on endometrial carcinoma is unclear. Based on the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, and the Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database (TCMSP™), the drug and target compounds were initially screened to construct a common network module.

Background: Accumulating evidence has indicated that methylation status is closely related to tumourigenesis and a few aggressive features of diverse cancers. However, as an important methylation regulation modification, the distribution of 5-methylcytosine (m5C) in high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) remains unclear.

Materials And Methods: We collected three pairs of human HGSOC tissues and adjacent non-tumour tissues to analyse the transcriptome-wide m5C methylation of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) by methylated RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing.

The incidence of tumours found in the patella, including primary and metastatic tumours, is low. Solitary metastasis of oesophageal carcinoma (OC) in the patella is even rarer. A 50-year-old man presented to our clinic because of pain and limited range of motion in the right knee for 4 hours and after a fall.

Background: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses a huge threat to the global public health. This study aimed to identify predictive indicators of severe COVID-19.

Methods: We retrospectively collected clinical data on hospital admission of all patients with severe COVID-19 and a control cohort (1:1) of gender- and hospital-matched patients with mild disease from 13 designated hospitals in the Hebei Province between 22 January and 15 April 2020.

Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) usually originates in the stomach, followed by the small intestine, rectum, and other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. The most common sites of metastasis are the liver and peritoneum, whereas spinal metastases from GIST are extremely rare.

Case Summary: We found a case of GIST with the first presentation of multilevel spinal metastases involving the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.

Background: JMJD2B has been reported to be implicated in malignant tumors. This study is aimed at exploring the expression and prognostic significance of JMJD2B in osteosarcoma and its association with hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF1).

Methods: The histopathological and clinical characteristics were retrospectively reviewed from 53 osteosarcoma patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Transcobalamin (TCN1) is a protein that binds vitamin B12 and is found at high levels in cancer tissues, particularly in colon cancer, linking it to aggressive tumor behavior and poor prognosis.
  • The study revealed that TCN1's expression is significantly elevated in colon cancer tissues, correlating with advanced stages and worse patient outcomes based on analyses like Western blotting and immunohistochemistry.
  • TCN1's expression decreases after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, suggesting that it could serve as a promising biomarker for assessing colon cancer progression and treatment response.

Objectives: A relationship exists between sirtuin-1 expression and growth and survival of malignant tumors. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of sirtuin-1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in patients with liposarcoma by examining associations between their expression levels and clinical outcomes.

Methods: Clinical and histopathological characteristics and follow-up and survival information were retrospectively reviewed for 42 liposarcoma cases.

Objectives: Danshensu is a traditional Chinese medicine that is used for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. We previously demonstrated its preventive effect against early-stage hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) in a rat model. To determine whether danshensu treatment might be useful for patients with chronic HPH, we examined its therapeutic effect in rats with prolonged HPH.

Leptin signaling influences osteoblastogenesis and modulates the fate of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) during bone and cartilage regeneration. Although MSCs abound in the osteosarcoma (OS) microenvironment, and leptin exhibits pro-tumorigenic properties, leptin's influence on OS progression and chemoresistant signaling in MSCs remains unclear. Using cell viability and apoptosis assays, we showed that medium conditioned by leptin-treated human MSCs promotes cisplatin resistance in cultured human OS cells.

Metatarsal metastasis from clear cell renal cell carcinoma: a case report and literature review.

BMC Urol

February 2020

Department of Orthopedics, The Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University, 12 Health Road, Shijiazhuang, Hebei, 050011, People's Republic of China.

Background: Bone metastasis is known to occur in some patients with cancer, usually in the spine, pelvis or ribs, and less than 0.01% of patients have metastases in the foot bone, so metatarsal metastasis is quite rare. The initial symptoms of osseous metastases are swelling, pain, or both.

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is the second most common bone tumor among children and adolescents worldwide. However, the genes and signaling pathways involved in ES tumorigenesis and progression remain unclear. The present study used two gene-expression profile datasets (GSE17674 and GSE31215) to elucidate key potential candidate genes and pathways in ES.

Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) is an immune checkpoint receptor that functions to attenuate T cell activation. In this study, we knocked out (KO) PD-1 in cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) using CRISPR-Cas9 system to evaluate its effect on the anti-tumor activity of the CTLs against multiple myeloma (MM). Results show that PD-1 KO CTLs facilitate apoptosis and caspase activation of the co-cultured MM cells and enhanced MM cell death by 36% compared with the control.
