Comparison of different localization needles and postures in localization of pulmonary nodules.

J Cardiothorac Surg

December 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The First Hospital of China Medical University, No. 155, Nanjing North Street, Shenyang, 110002, Liaoning, P.R. China.

Background: With advancements in imaging testing and surgical procedures, an increasing number of nodules with smaller diameters and deeper locations have been deemed suitable for surgical intervention. The preoperative localization of these nodules has become essential. In this retrospective single-center study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness and patient comfort associated with the use of a four-hook needle versus a hook-wire needle for preoperative localization.

Rationale: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation (CAA-ri) is a treatable condition characterized by an acute or subacute onset, with its primary pathological hallmark being the deposition of amyloid, predominantly β-amyloid (Aβ), within intracranial microvessels. Despite its potential for treatment, CAA-ri is a rare disorder that is frequently underrecognized by clinicians in practice. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical manifestations and therapeutic approaches associated with CAA-ri, aiming to enhance awareness among healthcare professionals.

Idiopathic eosinophilia, characterized by unexplained peripheral blood eosinophilia after ruling out secondary causes, is an extremely rare condition. Cryptococcal meningitis is a life-threatening opportunistic infection that primarily affects immunocompromised individuals, such as those with advanced AIDS or leukemia. In this report, we present a unique case of idiopathic eosinophilia concurrent with cryptococcal meningitis, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first such case described globally.

Background: Cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) is non-excitatory electrical stimulation for improving cardiac function. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of CCM on autophagy and apoptosis of cardiac myocytes in a rabbit model of chronic heart failure (CHF) and explore its possible mechanism.

Methods: Thirty rabbits were randomised into the Sham, heart failure (HF) and CCM groups, and animals in all three groups were sacrificed after 16 weeks of ascending aortic constriction or sham surgery.

Background: Multiple studies have shown that spouses of people with dementia (PwD) are two to six times more likely to develop dementia compared to the general population. Encouraging healthy behaviours and addressing modifiable risk factors could potentially prevent or delay up to 40% of dementia cases. However, little is known about how health behaviours change when a spouse assumes the role of primary caregiver.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of urinary C-C motif chemokine ligand 14 (CCL14) and the renal resistive index (RI) in predicting persistent AKI in unselected critically ill patients.

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary hospital's general intensive care unit (ICU). Consecutive adults who were admitted to the ICU were enrolled, with a primary endpoint of AKI lasting 48 h or longer.

Effect of furmonertinib on the pharmacokinetics of rivaroxaban or apixaban in vivo.

J Chromatogr B Analyt Technol Biomed Life Sci

December 2024

Department of Pharmacy, Hebei General Hospital, Shijiazhuang, China; Hebei Key Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacy, Shijiazhuang, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Furmonertinib is a third generation EGFR-TKI used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which often coexists with venous thromboembolism (VTE) that is treated using direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) like rivaroxaban and apixaban.
  • This study investigated how furmonertinib affects the pharmacokinetics of these DOACs in rats, revealing that it significantly increases the concentration and overall exposure (C and AUC) of both rivaroxaban and apixaban while decreasing their clearance (CL/F) and volume of distribution (V/F).
  • The findings highlight the importance of recognizing furmonertinib’s impact on

Genetic Diagnosis and Prenatal Diagnosis of a Rare FVIII Family With Haemophilia A.

J Cell Mol Med

December 2024

Reproductive Genetics Department, Hebei General Hospital, Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on identifying genetic variations causing haemophilia A within a unique family, using advanced techniques like DHPLC and PCR for diagnosis.
  • - Comprehensive clinical data and laboratory tests revealed the proband's significantly prolonged activated partial prothrombin time (APTT) and low clotting factor VIII activity, suggesting serious coagulation issues.
  • - A rare pathogenic mutation involving a 226 bp insertion in the F8 gene was discovered, highlighting the importance of using multiple experimental approaches for effective genetic diagnosis of haemophilia A.

Primary intracranial malignant melanoma(PIMM) is often difficult to treat in patients without a history of skin melanoma or extensive melanin deposition. Due to the rarity of the disease, the current accepted treatment is surgical resection, but the prognosis is still poor. We report a case of PIMM in an adolescent girl with epilepsy as the only symptom and atypical imaging findings.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between the ratio of fasting C-peptide to diabetes duration (FCP/DD) and the occurrence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
  • Conducted on 816 T2DM patients, it categorized them into DPN and non-DPN groups, revealing significant differences in age, diabetes duration, and other health indicators.
  • Results show that a higher FCP/DD ratio correlates with lower incidence of DPN and serves as a better predictor for its occurrence than just fasting C-peptide or diabetes duration alone.
