More than 90% of spermatozoa of boars in pork producing countries is stored in liquid at 17 °C; however, the quality of these spermatozoa is affected by bacterial breeding and oxidative damage. This study analyzed sperm quality and sperm capacitation after storage to study the effects of the effects of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) supplementation on seminal plasma (SP)-free sperm preservation. We investigated the effects of adding 20, 50, 100 and 200 μg/mL of ZnO NPs to a seminal free boar sperm diluent over a 7-day period at 17 °C to assess the changes in non-capacitated/capacitated sperm quality parameters, antioxidant capacity, ATP content and extent of protein tyrosine phosphorylation.

Despite the established anti-fibrotic effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), numerous challenges hinder their clinical application. A recent study demonstrated that microvesicles (MVs) from MSCs (MSC-MVs) could attenuate ARDS-related pulmonary fibrosis and enhance lung function hepatocyte growth factor mRNA transcription.

The isolation of a stable persistent carbazole-stabilized boron-centered monoradical anion 1˙, which has a high spin density at the B atom, has been reported. It is characterized using the crystal structure and UV-vis absorption spectrum, as well as electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Interestingly, the B-N bond was activated by the boron-centered radical anion 1˙, which had not been reported before.

Asymmetric carbon-based materials (ACBMs) have received significant attention in scientific research due to their unique structures and properties. Through the introduction of heterogeneous atoms and the construction of asymmetric ordered/disordered structures, ACBMs are optimized in terms of electrical conductivity, pore structure, and chemical composition and exhibit multiple properties such as hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, optical characteristics, and magnetic behavior. Here, the recent research progress of ACBMs is reviewed, focusing on the potential of these materials for electrochemical, catalysis, and biomedical applications and their unique advantages over conventional symmetric carbon-based materials.

Reproducing the microstructure of the natural cornea remains a significant challenge in achieving the mechanical and biological functionality of artificial corneas. Therefore, the development of cascade structures that mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM), achieving both macro-stability and micro-structure, is of critical importance. This study proposes a novel, efficient, and general photo-functionalization strategy for modifying natural biomaterials.

Nowadays, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been emerged as an efficient platform for enzyme immobilization due to their high porosity, tunability, and chemical versatility. In this study, a series of hybrid lipase@NKMOF-101-M (M = Mg, Mn, Zn, Co, or Ni) biocatalysts were constructed through a facile in situ encapsulation method, and the encapsulation and immobilization of lipase in MOFs were carefully validated. The catalytic activity of lipase@NKMOF-101-Mn was 2-fold higher than that of lipase@ZIF-8 and 3-fold higher than that of lipase@MCM-41 due to its excellent dispersibility and hydrophobicity in hexane.

For biomedical applications, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) are often combined with other elements or functionalized with specific surface ligands, while their intrinsic biological activities are not yet fully understood. This study investigates the anti-inflammatory potential of four unmodified 2D TMDCs, including WS, WSe, NbS, and NbSe nanosheets, in LPS-activated MH-S cells in vitro and in a mouse model of pulmonary inflammation in vivo. Despite their varying compositions, these 2D TMDCs exhibited comparable anti-inflammatory effects in LPS-activated MH-S cells.

In previous reports, we highlighted the significant involvement of SMYD3, a histone methyltransferase (HMT), in various aspects of cancer progression, including cell adhesion, migration, and invasion. In this study, we delved deeper into understanding the relationship between SMYD3 and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) both in cell lines and clinical samples. Our investigation uncovered a notable correlation between heightened SMYD3 expression and the presence of EMT markers in human breast cancer tissues.

Pathogenic intracellular bacteria pose a significant threat to global public health due to the barriers presented by host cells hindering the timely detection of hidden bacteria and the effective delivery of therapeutic agents. To address these challenges, we propose a tandem diagnosis-guided treatment paradigm. A supramolecular sensor array is developed for simple, rapid, accurate, and high-throughput identification of intracellular bacteria.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is significantly upregulated in glioblastoma (GBM) and plays a crucial role in cell apoptosis and drug resistance. Micheliolide (MCL) is a natural product with a variety of antitumour activities, and the fumarate salt form of dimethylamino MCL (DMAMCL; commercial name ACT001) has been tested in clinical trials for recurrent GBM; this compound suppresses the proliferation of GBM cells by rewiring aerobic glycolysis. Herein, we demonstrated that MCL directly targets GAPDH through covalent binding to the cysteine 247 (Cys247) residue.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different cold acclimation strategies on exercise performance in male mice exposed to low-temperature environments.
Methods: Male mice were subjected to five distinct acclimation regimens over 8 weeks: immersion at 10 °C (10 °CI) or 20 °C (20 °CI), swimming at 10 °C (10 °CS), 20 °C (20 °CS), or 34 °C (34 °CS). During the first 2 weeks, the acclimation time progressively decreased from 30 min to 3 min per day, and the water temperatures were lowered from 34 °C to the target levels, followed by 6 weeks of consistent exposure.

not only damages plant leaves directly but also causes a sooty blotch due to the honeydew secreted by the nymphs and adults. This pest is widespread and seems to be spreading from low latitude to higher latitude areas where winters are typically colder, indicating an increase in its cold tolerance. Changes in temperature help insects to anticipate the arrival of winter, allowing them to take defensive measures in advance.

Rapid and effective methods for tracing the geographic origin of wildlife samples are essential for tackling the illegal wildlife trade. Traditional morphological categorization methods are often inadequate as relying on the mitochondrial COXI barcode is insufficient for determining geographic populations. To address these limitations, we developed a bioinformatics-based pipeline for the rapid identification of traceable nuclear genome loci.

The mammalian nervous system controls complex functions through highly specialized and interacting structures. Single-cell sequencing can provide information on cell-type-specific chromatin structure and regulatory elements, revealing differences in chromatin organization between different cell types and their potential roles of these differences in brain function. Here, we generated a chromatin accessibility dataset through single-cell ATAC-seq of 174,593 high-quality nuclei from 16 adult rat brain regions.
