December 2023

Hebei Key Laboratory of Stomatology, Hebei Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, School and Hospital of Stomatology, Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, China.

Leptin is a peptide hormone that regulates energy balance, immune inflammatory response, and bone metabolism. Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between leptin and periodontitis, a local inflammatory disease that progressively weakens the supporting structures of the teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss. This article reviews the existing literature and discusses leptin's basic characteristics, its relationship with periodontitis, and its effects on periodontal tissue metabolism.

Objective: To evaluate a rabbit model of mandibular box-shaped defects created through an intraoral approach and determine the minimum size defect that would not spontaneously heal during the rabbit's natural life (or critical-sized defect, CSD).

Methods: Forty-five 6-month-old rabbits were randomly divided into five defect size groups (nine each). Mandibular box-shaped defects of different sizes (4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 mm) were created in each hemimandible, with the same width and depth (3 and 2 mm, respectively).

Rab27a-mediated extracellular vesicle secretion contributes to osteogenesis in periodontal ligament-bone niche communication.

Sci Rep

May 2023

Department of Orthodontics, Shanghai Stomatological Hospital & School of Stomatology, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200001, China.

Periodontitis, an infectious and common disease worldwide, leads to the destruction of the periodontal ligament-alveolar bone complex. Within the bone metabolic niche, communication between periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) has been considered a major contributor to osteogenesis. PDLSC-derived extracellular vesicles (P-EVs) have shown great potential for bone regeneration.
