Backgrounds & Aims: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease in which autoimmune destruction of the small intrahepatic bile ducts eventually leads to cirrhosis. Many patients have inadequate response to licensed medications, motivating the search for novel therapies. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses (GWMA) of PBC have identified numerous risk loci for this condition, providing insight into its aetiology.

X Chromosome Contribution to the Genetic Architecture of Primary Biliary Cholangitis.

Gastroenterology

June 2021

Division of Gastroenterology and Center for Autoimmune Liver Diseases, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Milano-Bicocca, Monza, Italy; European Reference Network on Hepatological Diseases, San Gerardo Hospital, Monza, Italy. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease.

Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals).

Background: Adipose tissue, which can be readily harvested via a number of liposuction techniques, offers an easily accessible and abundant source of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). Consequently, ASCs have become an increasingly popular reconstructive option and a novel means of aesthetic soft tissue augmentation.

Objectives: This paper examines recent advances in the aesthetic surgery field, extending beyond traditional review formats to incorporate a comprehensive analysis of current clinical trials, adoption status, and the commercialization pathway.

Improved immediate breast reconstruction as a result of oncoplastic multidisciplinary meeting.

Breast Cancer (Dove Med Press)

April 2017

Department of Breast Surgery, Parapet Breast Centre, Frimley Health Foundation Trust, Windsor.

Introduction: The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines recommend that breast reconstruction should be available to all women undergoing mastectomy and discussed at the initial surgical consultation (2002, and updated 2009). The National Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction Audit (2009) showed that 21% of mastectomy patients underwent immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) and 11% had delayed breast reconstruction (DBR). Breast reconstruction has been shown to have a positive effect on quality of life postmastectomy.

Stratification of Latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection by Cellular Immune Profiling.

J Infect Dis

May 2017

Tuberculosis Research Centre, Respiratory Medicine, National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, St Mary's Campus.

Background: Recently acquired and remotely acquired latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are clinically indistinguishable, yet recent acquisition of infection is the greatest risk factor for progression to tuberculosis in immunocompetent individuals. We aimed to evaluate the ability of cellular immune signatures that differ between active tuberculosis and LTBI to distinguish recently from remotely acquired LTBI.

Methods: Fifty-nine individuals were recruited: 20 had active tuberculosis, 19 had recently acquired LTBI, and 20 had remotely acquired LTBI.

Background: The technique of double first metatarsal osteotomies was first developed in response to the high frequency of recurrence noted in the treatment of severe adolescent congruent hallux valgus deformities. The concept behind the use of this technique is that it allows the individual correction of each component of the deformity. We have modified the technique for use in adult hallux valgus where the majority of deformities are incongruent deformities and the distal chevron osteotomy is used primarily for its additional translational properties rather than purely to correct the distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA).

Proximal first metatarsal opening wedge osteotomy: geometric analysis on saw bone models.

Foot (Edinb)

March 2015

Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust, Heatherwood Hospital, London Road, Ascot, SL5 8AA, UK.

Background: For hallux valgus correction, distal first metatarsal osteotomy is generally used for minor to moderate deformities, diaphyseal osteotomy for moderate deformities and basal osteotomy or arthrodesis for severe deformities. With the advent of locking plates, there has been renewed interest in opening wedge basal osteotomy.

Objective: We undertook this study in order to understand the power and limitations of this osteotomy.

Postincident review of aggression and violence in mental health settings.

J Psychosoc Nurs Ment Health Serv

July 2010

Berkshire Healthcare National Health Service Foundation Trust, Department of Mental Health, Heatherwood Hospital, London Road, Ascot, Berkshire, United Kingdom.

Management of violence and aggression remains a challenge to mental health care practitioners. It has been acknowledged that for a small number of incidents involving aggression, use of restraint will continue to be a method of containing potentially dangerous situations. The impact of being involved in these procedures remains under researched, but there is growing acknowledgment that some form of post incident review should take place after restraint use.

Ancient Egypt was one of the greatest civilizations to have arisen, becoming the cradle of scientific enquiry and social development over 3 millennia; undoubtedly its knowledge of medicine has been vastly underestimated. Few artefacts survive which describe the medical organization, but from the extent of the diseases afflicting that ancient populus there would have been much to study. Evidence from papyri, tomb bas reliefs and the writings of historians of antiquity tell of an intense interest in the sciences, humanities and medicine born of an educated society which had overcome the superstitions of its nomadic ancestors.
