BACKGROUND Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation may improve kidney function, but in patients awaiting heart transplantation, the long-term effects of LVAD implantation on renal function and subsequent clinical outcome are unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS We analyzed data in patients with LVAD implants (n=139) and without LVAD implants (n=1038) who were listed for a heart transplant at our institution between 2000 and 2019. The primary endpoint was an impairment in renal function (decrease of creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] by ≥30%) up to a maximum of 2 years after listing.

Objective: To investigate changes in quality of life (QoL), cognition and functional status according to arrhythmia recurrence after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation.
Methods: We compared QoL, cognition and functional status in patients with recurrent atrial tachycardia (AT)/AF versus those without recurrent AT/AF in the AXAFA-AFNET 5 clinical trial. We also sought to identify factors associated with improvement in QoL and functional status following AF ablation by overall change scores with and without analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).

Background: Bicuspid aortic stenosis accounts for almost 50% of patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement in the younger patients. Expanding the indication of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) toward lower-risk and younger populations will lead to increased use of TAVR for patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis despite the exclusion of bicuspid anatomy in all pivotal clinical trials.
Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the association of BAV morphology and outcomes of TAVR with the new-generation devices.

Growing interest lies in the assessment of the metabolic status of patients with a univentricular circulation after Fontan operation, especially in changes of amino acid metabolism. Using targeted metabolomic examinations, we investigated amino acid metabolism in a homogeneous adult Fontan-patient group with a dominant left ventricle, seeking biomarker patterns that might permit better understanding of Fontan pathophysiology and early detection of subtle ventricular or circulatory dysfunction. We compared serum amino acid levels (42 analytes; AbsoluteIDQ p180 kit, Biocrates Life Sciences, Innsbruck, Austria) in 20 adult Fontan patients with a dominant left ventricle and those in age- and sex-matched biventricular controls.

Severe mitral annulus calcifications significantly hinder surgical repair and replacement of the dysfunctional mitral valve. Herein, we present a novel surgical technique where we created an intra-atrial neomitral ring using a vascular Dacron graft in which a prosthetic valve was implanted. This approach is a simple alternative technique that can be used when anatomic prosthetic valve implantation is not feasible.

Mitral valve annuloplasty has been the gold standard for treatment of functional mitral valve regurgitation. However, annuloplasty for functional mitral regurgitation may cause augmented posterior leaflet tethering, which results in functional anterior prolapse. Herein we added papillary muscle heads focalization for such patients.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is marked by an inflamed mucosa of sinuses and is accompanied by a significantly reduced quality of live. Since no guidelines for the treatment of CRS are available, long lasting clinical histories with health care costs adding up to dozens of billion $ annually are caused by CRS. The progression of CRS is often induced by bacterial infections and/or a shift in microbiome as well as biofilm formation.

Drug hypersensitivity reactions that resemble acute immune reactions are linked to certain human leucocyte antigen (HLA) alleles. Severe and life-threatening Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis following treatment with the antiepileptic and psychotropic drug Carbamazepine are associated with HLA-B*15:02; whereas carriers of HLA-A*31:01 develop milder symptoms. It is not understood how these immunogenic differences emerge genotype-specific.

Introduction: Sudden cardiac death from ventricular fibrillation (VF) remains a major health problem worldwide. Currently, there are limited treatment options available to patients who suffer from episodes of VF. Because Purkinje fibers have been implicated as a source of initiation of VF, we are presenting the first paper of a series highlighting the promising results of substrate modulation through "De-Networking" of the Purkinje system preventing VF in patients without an alternative ablation strategy.

Assessment of left ventricular mass (LVM) is important in the evaluation of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is the gold standard. Recent software allows LVM calculation by real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE). We investigated the impact of different software analysis tools on LVM determination by CMR or RT3DE in a cohort of patients with heterogeneous left ventricular (LV) disease.
