Background: Propensity score matching has become a popular method for estimating causal treatment effects in non-randomized studies. However, for time-to-event outcomes, the estimation of hazard ratios based on propensity scores can be challenging if omitted or unobserved covariates are present. Not accounting for such covariates could lead to treatment estimates, differing from the estimate of interest.

: Aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV) is a well-established surrogate marker of arterial stiffness. The Antares algorithm offers a method for determining aPWV from oscillometric blood pressure waveforms without requiring additional inputs. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the association and prognostic value of aPWV, determined by Antares, in predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).

Background: Prosthesis-patient mismatch after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) can be measured echocardiographically (measured prosthesis-patient mismatch [PPMm]) or predicted (predicted prosthesis-patient mismatch [PPMp]) using published effective orifice area (EOA) reference values. However, the clinical implications of PPM post-TAVR remain unclear.
Objectives: This study aimed to elucidate the prevalence of PPMm and PPMp post-TAVR and their impact on mortality in a large international cohort.

Background: Tricuspid valve transcatheter edge-to-edge repair has emerged as a valuable treatment option for patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR).
Objectives: This study aims to investigate the safety and effectiveness of the PASCAL transcatheter valve repair system in treating severe TR in a real-world patient population.
Methods: The PASTE (PASCAL for Tricuspid Regurgitation-a European registry) study is an investigator-initiated, multicenter, retrospective, and prospective observational cohort analysis conducted across 16 European heart valve centers including consecutive patients treated with the PASCAL transcatheter valve repair system from February 2019 to November 2023.

This state-of-the-art review aimed to synthesize evidence from various sex-stratified studies on aortic stenosis (AS), focusing on the difference in clinical presentation, anatomical characteristics, pathophysiology, and management of AS. In comparison to men, women with AS are present at later stages, are older, more symptomatic, frailer, and exhibit higher operative risk [Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) score]. Women tend to have smaller aortic valve (AV) areas and left ventricular (LV) outflow tract, leading to lower stroke volumes (SVs) than men and have a higher prevalence of paradoxical, low-flow, low-gradient AS.

Background: Impaired diastolic function is associated with a variety of diseases such as myocarditis or dilated cardiomyopathy. Currently, echocardiography is the standard method for assessing diastolic function. Recently, it has been postulated that cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is an at least equivalent or superior alternative to echocardiography.

Background: The SynCardia® temporary total artificial heart (TAH) serves as a mechanical circulatory support device for patients suffering from irreversible biventricular failure.
Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 196 consecutive patients who underwent TAH implantation at our center from 2001 to 2021. We assessed survival rates and all-cause mortality during TAH support, including survival post-heart transplantation.

Background: Little is known about the disturbance in bodily experience (BE) following ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation. The level of disturbance in BE serves as an indicator of the status of the patients' adaptation process to the device. This process encompasses coping with both the more affective, psychological conflicts and the more cognitive, practical challenges of living with the VAD.

Background: Mitochondria play a crucial role in adapting to fluctuating energy demands, particularly in various heart diseases. This study investigates mitochondrial morphology near intercalated discs in left ventricular (LV) heart tissues, comparing samples from patients with sinus rhythm (SR), atrial fibrillation (AF), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM).
Methods: Transmission electron microscopy was used to analyze mitochondria within 0-3.

Background: Shock-reduction implantable cardioverter-defibrillator programming (SRP) was associated with fewer therapies and improved survival in randomized controlled trials, but real-world studies investigating SRP and associated outcomes are limited.
Methods And Results: The BIOTRONIK CERTITUDE registry was linked with the Medicare database. We included all patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implanted between August 22, 2012 and September 30, 2021 in the United States.

Objective: Prediction of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and small of gestational age (SGA) infants by using various ultrasound cardiac parameters in a logistic regression model.
Methods: In this retrospective study we obtained standardized ultrasound images of 357 fetuses between the 20th and 39th week of gestation, 99 of these fetuses were between the 3rd and 10th growth percentile, 61 smaller than 3rd percentile and 197- appropriate for gestational age over the 10th percentile (control group). Several cardiac parameters were studied.

Background: Invasive coronary angiography (ICA) is the standard for pre-procedural assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). However, it requires hospitalization and can be associated with complications. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) may be a viable alternative to rule out prognostically relevant CAD.

Background: Patient-prosthesis mismatch (PPM) after aortic valve replacement potentially affects the outcome after the operation. This study sought to determine whether PPM has an impact on long-term mortality and reoperation rates.
Methods: We included 645 patients who underwent biologic aortic valve replacement between 2000 and 2007.

Aims: Data on the prognostic impact of residual tricuspid regurgitation (TR) after tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER) are scarce. The aim of this analysis was to evaluate 2-year survival and symptomatic outcomes of patients in relation to residual TR after T-TEER.
Methods And Results: Using the large European Registry of Transcatheter Repair for Tricuspid Regurgitation (EuroTR registry) we investigated the impact of residual TR on 2-year all-cause mortality and New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class at follow-up.

Previous omics research in patients with complex congenital heart disease and single-ventricle circulation (irrespective of the stage of palliative repair) revealed alterations in cardiac and systemic metabolism, inter alia abnormalities in energy metabolism, and inflammation, oxidative stress or endothelial dysfunction. We employed an affinity-proteomics approach focused on cell surface markers, cytokines, and chemokines in the serum of 20 adult Fontan patients with a good functioning systemic left ventricle, and we 20 matched controls to reveal any specific processes on a cellular level. Analysis of 349 proteins revealed 4 altered protein levels related to chronic inflammation, with elevated levels of syndecan-1 and glycophorin-A, as well as decreased levels of leukemia inhibitory factor and nerve growth factor-ß in Fontan patients compared to controls.

Background: In cardiology, cardiac output (CO) is an important parameter for assessing cardiac function. While invasive thermodilution procedures are the gold standard for CO assessment, transthoracic Doppler echocardiography (TTE) has become the established method for routine CO assessment in daily clinical practice. However, a demand persists for non-invasive approaches, including oscillometric pulse wave analysis (PWA), to enhance the accuracy of CO estimation, reduce complications associated with invasive procedures, and facilitate its application in non-intensive care settings.

We aim to evaluate the association between moderate AS and all-cause death, comparing it with no/mild AS (in a general referral population and in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction).
Methods And Results: A systematic review and pooled meta-analysis of Kaplan-Meier-derived reconstructed time-to-event data of studies published by June 2023 was conducted to evaluate survival outcomes among patients with moderate AS in comparison with individuals with no/mild AS.
