Background: There have been significant improvements in Chagas disease therapy and it is now widely accepted that most patients with chronic disease might benefit from therapy. However, there are challenges to monitor drug efficacy and cure for these patients, which are important impediments for current and future therapies. Trypanosoma cruzi-PCR is highly variable while IgG seroconversion takes decades yielding variable results depending on the antigen(s) used for the assay.

The geometry of coronary arteries is believed to play the role as an atherosclerotic risk factor on its own. The full characterization of the normal coronary network has been reported in the literature. Reports on the integration of geometry and functional data for normal coronary vessels started to proliferate more recently.

The characterization of vascular geometry is a fundamental step towards the correct interpretation of coronary artery disease. In this work, we report a comprehensive comparison of the geometry featured by coronary vessels as obtained from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and the combination of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) with bi-plane angiography (AX) modalities. We analyzed 34 vessels from 28 patients with coronary disease, which were deferred to CCTA and IVUS procedures.

MicroRNAs (miRs) are master regulators of post-transcriptional gene expression, and they are often dysregulated in individuals suffering from diabetes. We investigated the roles of miR-101-3p and miR-204-5p, both of which negatively regulate insulin secretion and cell survival and are highly expressed in pancreatic β cells, in the context of type 1 diabetes (T1D) pathogenesis. Using quantitative real time PCR, we evaluated serum levels of miR-101-3p and miR-204-5p in four groups, including recent-onset T1D patients (T1D group; = 50), individuals with normal glucose levels expressing one islet autoantibody (Ab) (single Ab group; = 26) or multiple autoantibodies (multiple Ab group; = 12), and healthy controls (control group; = 43).

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is prevalent in older patients on dialysis, but the prognostic relevance of coronary assessment in asymptomatic subjects remains undefined. We tested the usefulness of a protocol, based on clinical, invasive, and noninvasive coronary assessment, by answering these questions: Could selecting asymptomatic patients for coronary invasive assessment identify those at higher risk of events? Is CAD associated with a worse prognosis?
Methods: A retrospective study including 276 asymptomatic patients at least 65 years old on the waiting list, prospectively evaluated for CAD and followed up until death or renal transplantation, were classified into two groups: 1) low-risk patients who did not undergo coronary angiography (n=63) and 2) patients who did undergo angiography (n=213). The latter group was reclassified into patients with significant CAD or normal angiograms/nonsignificant CAD.

In this work we propose to validate the predictive capabilities of one-dimensional (1D) blood flow models with full three-dimensional (3D) models in the context of patient-specific coronary hemodynamics in hyperemic conditions. Such conditions mimic the state of coronary circulation during the acquisition of the Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) index. Demonstrating that 1D models accurately reproduce FFR estimates obtained with 3D models has implications in the approach to computationally estimate FFR.

Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are often associated, but whether a temporal relationship exists is unknown. We aimed to investigate the effect of OSA on the risk of developing MetS in the general population.A prospective study was conducted combining two population-based samples: Episono (Brazil) and HypnoLaus (Switzerland).

Purpose: Nanoemulsions (LDE) with a lipid composition resembling that of LDL can concentrate in aortic lesions and when associated with anti-blastic agents, such as paclitaxel or etoposide, decrease atherosclerotic lesions induced in rabbits. Our aim was to test the association of a lipophilic derivative of methotrexate, didodecyl-methotrexate (ddMTX) to LDE on the lesions and on the expression of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory genes.
Methods: Twenty male New Zealand rabbits were fed 1 % cholesterol diet for 60 days.

Bronchopleural fistula may be treated by medical, endoscopic, and surgical techniques, but large fistulas remain a challenge to be closed using endoscopic techniques. We describe the endoscopic closure of a bronchial total fistula with the Occlutech Figulla ASD N device (International Occlutech AB, Helsingborg, Sweden), originally designed for closure of an atrial septal defect. The procedure was conducted without general anesthesia or rigid bronchoscopy, bronchography, or radioscopy.

Introduction: Saphenous vein grafting is still widely used to revascularize ischemic myocardium. The effectiveness of this procedure is limited by neointima formation and accelerated atherosclerosis, which frequently leads to graft occlusion. A better understanding of this process is important to clarify the mechanisms of vein graft disease and to aid in the formulation of strategies for prevention and/or therapeutics.

Hypertension (HTN) has been controversially related to neurovascular compression (NVC) at the rostral ventrolateral (RVL) medulla in anatomical, surgical, and radiological reports. Our objective was to investigate the association between primary HTN and signs of NVC at the medulla oblongata on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to explore a new classification based on image criteria. Subjects with (n=64) and without (n=29) HTN were studied.

Splanchnic hypoperfusion has been implicated as the motor of multiple organ dysfunction. Hypertonic saline has shown to benefit microcirculatory blood flow. In hemorrhaged animals, we tested the hypothesis that small-volume 3% NaCl/10% dextran 40 (3%HSD) promotes global and regional improvements, including gastric mucosal acidosis reversal.

Mechanical forces contribute to maintenance of cardiovascular homeostasis via the control of release and production of vasoactive substances. We demonstrated previously that shear stress decreases rat ACE activity and expression. Using a reporter gene approach and mutagenesis, we show now that the classic shear stress responsive element or SSRE (GAGACC) contained within 1,274 bp of this promoter is not functional in response to shear stress (15 dyn/cm2, 18 h) [for the wild-type ACE promoter (WLuc), static control (C) = 107 +/- 6.

Objective: To evaluate the inter- and intrareader variability for interpretation of a modified Larsen's radiographic classification system for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) focused on osteochondral lesions and a conventional Larsen's classification system, compared to a reference MR scoring system of corresponding images.
Materials And Methods: Seventy-five radiographs of 60 children with JRA, performed within a short interval of time from the MR examinations, were independently evaluated by three experienced radiologists, three diagnostic imaging residents and three rheumatologists, in two separate sessions, according to the two different classification methods, blinded to the corresponding MR images.
Results: The inter- and intrareader concordance rates between the two radiographic classification systems and the MR-related radiographs were respectively poor and poor/moderate.
