Article Synopsis
  • Diabetic retinopathy (DR) identification is challenging as it often occurs long after diabetes onset, making early detection crucial for effective management.
  • Researchers investigated using texture analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal images to identify early retinal changes in diabetic animals that may not yet be clinically visible.
  • Results indicated that type 1 diabetes led to significant changes in several texture metrics by 4 weeks post-diabetes induction, correlating with other early indicators of retinal damage such as thinning and inflammation, highlighting the potential of texture analysis for early DR detection.

Does the Hyperglycemia Impact on COVID-19 Outcomes Depend upon the Presence of Diabetes?-An Observational Study.

Metabolites

November 2022

Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Central, Hospital de Curry Cabral, 1050-099 Lisbon, Portugal.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has emerged as a major risk factor for COVID-19 severity and SARS-CoV-2 infection can worsen glycemic control and may precipitate new-onset diabetes. At-admission hyperglycemia (AH) is a known predictor for worse outcomes in many diseases and seems to have a similar effect in COVID-19 patients. In this study, we aimed to assess the impact of AH regardless of pre-existing diabetes mellitus and new-onset diabetes diagnosis in the clinical severity of COVID-19 inpatients in the first months of the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) is a genetic disease linked to a mutation in the HBB gene, leading to sickle-shaped red blood cells and various health complications, particularly in pediatric patients in Angola.
  • The study involved 200 SCA children and analyzed their clinical data, as well as specific gene polymorphisms, revealing that certain variants in the CD36, VCAM1, and NOS3 genes significantly affect the severity of anemia and related health outcomes.
  • This research is the first to demonstrate the role of these genetic modifiers in the expression of SCA symptoms among Angolan children, suggesting that they could help predict disease severity and treatment needs.

Introduction: A number of anti-diabetic treatments have been favored during the continuing spread of the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) are a group of antidiabetic drugs, the glucose reducing effect of which is founded on augmenting glucose-dependent insulin secretion with concomitant reduction of glucagon secretion and delayed gastric emptying. Apart from their glucose lowering effects, GLP1-RAs also exert a plethora of pleiotropic activities in the form of anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic and anti-obesogenic properties, with beneficial cardiovascular and renal impact.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of adverse outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes, and all new anti-diabetic agents are mandated to undergo cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs). Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) are incretin mimetics that reduce blood glucose levels with a low associated risk of hypoglycaemia. CVOTs with different GLP-1 RAs yielded different results in terms of major cardiovascular composite outcome (MACE), with some trials showing superiority in the treatment arm, whereas other simply displayed non-inferiority.
