Introduction: Both doctors and nurses showed a greater risk of being exposed to different mental health conditions following mass casualties. This systematic review aims to synthesise the existing evidence on the prevalence of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and their associated risk factors among doctors and nurses following mass casualty incidents.

Methods And Analysis: Seven electronic databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE Ovid, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science and Nursing & Allied Health database) will be searched from 2010 to 2022 with peer-reviewed articles in English language using the predefined keywords.

Centro de Investigación Biomédica en red en salud Mental (CIBERSAM), Spain; Department of Psychiatry, University of Oviedo, Oviedo, Spain; Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias (ISPA). Instituto de Neurociencias del Principado de Asturias (INEUROPA). Mental Health Services of the Principality of Asturias (SESPA), Oviedo, Spain.

Little is known about genetic predisposition to relapse. Previous studies have linked cognitive and psychopathological (mainly schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) polygenic risk scores (PRS) with clinical manifestations of the disease. This study aims to explore the potential role of PRS from major mental disorders and cognition on schizophrenia relapse.

October 2023

Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry of Dairy Products, Instituto de Productos Lácteos de Asturias (IPLA), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain.

Unlabelled: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly worldwide, seriously endangering human health. Although SARS-CoV-2 had a lower impact on paediatric population, children with COVID-19 have been reported as suffering from gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms at a higher rate than adults. The aim of this work was to evaluate faeces as a source of potential biomarkers of severity in the paediatric population, with an emphasis on intestinal microbiota and faecal immune mediators, trying to identify possible dysbiosis and immune intestinal dysfunction associated with the risk of hospitalization.

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had important consequences on the health system. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were a key element in the response and were forced to modify their daily procedures. The main objective of this study was to find out if there were differences in response times and in the profile of patients treated by the Advanced Life Support (ALS) units of Servicio de Asistencia Médica Urgente (SAMU)-Asturias, the EMS of the Principality of Asturias, between the pre-pandemic period and the pandemic period.

Behavioral responses of terrestrial mammals to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Science

June 2023

Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, Conservation Ecology Center, 1500 Remount Rd, Front Royal, VA, 22630, USA.

COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020 reduced human mobility, providing an opportunity to disentangle its effects on animals from those of landscape modifications. Using GPS data, we compared movements and road avoidance of 2300 terrestrial mammals (43 species) during the lockdowns to the same period in 2019. Individual responses were variable with no change in average movements or road avoidance behavior, likely due to variable lockdown conditions.

Unhealthy dietary habits determined during childhood may represent a risk factor to many of the chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adulthood. Mediterranean Diet (MD) adherence in children and adolescents (8-16 years) living in Spain was investigated using the KIDMED questionnaire in a comparative analysis of two cross-sectional nationwide representative studies: enKid (1998-2000, = 1001) and PASOS (2019-2020, = 3540). Taking into account the educational level of pupils, as well as the characteristics of the place of living, a significant association was found between a KIDMED score ≥ 8 (optimal MD adherence) and primary education as well as residency in an area of <50,000 inhabitants, while living in the southern regions was associated with non-optimal MD adherence ( < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Childhood obesity is a growing public health concern globally, with socioeconomic status (SES) being a key factor influencing its prevalence among children and adolescents.
  • A study involving 2791 Spanish children aged 8 to 16 revealed that indicators of SES, such as parental education and employment status, are significantly linked to rates of obesity, severe obesity, and abdominal obesity.
  • Higher SES, characterized by university education, employment, and higher income, is strongly associated with lower rates of obesity; for example, children in the highest SES category had much lower odds of obesity compared to those in the lowest category.

TFOS Lifestyle: Impact of lifestyle challenges on the ocular surface.

Ocul Surf

April 2023

Department of Ophthalmology, New Zealand National Eye Centre, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

Many factors in the domains of mental, physical, and social health have been associated with various ocular surface diseases, with most of the focus centered on aspects of dry eye disease (DED). Regarding mental health factors, several cross-sectional studies have noted associations between depression and anxiety, and medications used to treat these disorders, and DED symptoms. Sleep disorders (both involving quality and quantity of sleep) have also been associated with DED symptoms.

Rare predicted loss-of-function variants of type I IFN immunity genes are associated with life-threatening COVID-19.

Genome Med

April 2023

Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases, Necker Branch, INSERM U1163, Paris, France.

Background: We previously reported that impaired type I IFN activity, due to inborn errors of TLR3- and TLR7-dependent type I interferon (IFN) immunity or to autoantibodies against type I IFN, account for 15-20% of cases of life-threatening COVID-19 in unvaccinated patients. Therefore, the determinants of life-threatening COVID-19 remain to be identified in ~ 80% of cases.

Methods: We report here a genome-wide rare variant burden association analysis in 3269 unvaccinated patients with life-threatening COVID-19, and 1373 unvaccinated SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals without pneumonia.

Examining the association between exposome score for schizophrenia and cognition in schizophrenia, siblings, and healthy controls: Results from the EUGEI study.

Psychiatry Res

May 2023

Department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology, School for Mental Health and Neuroscience, Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands; Department of Psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between the exposome score for schizophrenia (ES-SCZ), which represents cumulative environmental exposures, and cognitive impairments in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), their unaffected siblings, and healthy controls.
  • Using assessments like the WAIS-III, DFAR, and BFR, researchers analyzed a sample of 1200 patients, 1371 siblings, and 1564 healthy subjects to evaluate cognitive performance across different domains.
  • The findings showed no significant relationship between ES-SCZ and cognitive abilities in SSD patients; however, siblings and healthy controls exhibited a negative correlation with cognitive scores, indicating that environmental factors may impact those without the disorder differently.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the genetic factors contributing to the risk of different cancers by analyzing data from 12 genome-wide association studies, involving nearly 910,000 participants.
  • Researchers discovered 15 new cancer susceptibility loci and found that some genetic variants are shared between multiple cancer types, despite much of the heritability being specific to individual cancers.
  • The findings indicate the importance of using larger sample sizes for more effective cross-cancer analyses, which could unveil additional genetic regions linked to increased cancer risk.
