Background/aim: There is currently no data from Türkiye on whether, following a diagnosis of asthma, patients are given an asthma action plan to implement. There is also no data on whether patients can manage their treatment based on the provided asthma action plans. The present study aimed to determine the use of asthma action plans in Türkiye and the awareness levels of patients about these plans.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of vitamin B complex and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) pre-treatments on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in rats, focusing on their potential to enhance antioxidant defense mechanisms and reduce post-ischemic liver damage. Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: sham group (n = 10), IRI group (n = 10), vitamin B group (n = 10), vitamin B + ALA group (n = 10). In the IRI, vitamin B, and vitamin B + ALA groups, the rats underwent 45 min of hepatic ischemia followed by 60 min of reperfusion.

Article Synopsis
  • People are increasingly exposed to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from mobile phones, raising concerns about potential health effects, particularly on reproduction.
  • A study tested the effects of EMR (4.5 GB; 2600 MHz) on rat ovaries by dividing 18 female rats into control, stand-by, and dialing groups over 8 weeks.
  • The results showed follicular degeneration and increased expression of specific proteins related to cell death (Caspase-3) and cell survival (Beclin-1) in the EMR-exposed groups, suggesting that mobile phone radiation can harm ovarian health.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates oxidative stress levels in ICU patients by measuring total oxidant level (TOS), total antioxidant level (TAS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) before treatment starts.
  • In total, 153 patients were analyzed, along with 60 healthy controls, revealing significantly higher TOS and OSI in patients, indicating elevated oxidative stress.
  • The findings show that patients also had increased levels of inflammation markers like ferritin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT), suggesting a strong correlation between oxidative stress and inflammation in critically ill individuals.

It is known that critical illness and associated neuromuscular problems begin to appear in patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) for more than a week. The goal of this study was to research the role of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in the treatment of cytokine storm and critical illness neuromyopathy (CINM) in a rat sepsis model. Rats were assigned into three groups, and a feces intraperitoneal-injection group (FIP) procedure was carried out on 30 rats to induce a model of sepsis for critical illness polyneuromyopathy (CINM).

Objectives: Identifying reliable biomarkers to predict mortality in critically ill patients is crucial for optimizing management in intensive care units (ICUs). Inflammatory and metabolic markers are increasingly recognized for their prognostic value. This study aims to evaluate the association of various inflammatory and metabolic markers with ICU mortality.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of oligometastasis and the M descriptor on survival in small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective study included patients with newly diagnosed extensive-stage SCLC(ES-SCLC) from 2010 to 2020. Subgroups: Group 1: single metastasis in a single organ, Group 2: 2-5 metastases in a single organ, Group 3: 6 or more metastases in a single organ, and Group 4: metastases in two or more organs.

The predictive value of changes in C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin, and leukocyte levels, which are commonly used in the diagnosis of infection in sepsis and septic shock, remains a topic of debate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of changes in CRP, procalcitonin, and leukocyte counts on the prognosis of 230 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with the diagnosis of sepsis and pneumonia-related septic shock between 1 April 2022 and 31 December 2023, and to investigate whether any of these markers have a superior predictive value over the others in forecasting prognosis. This single-center, retrospective, cross-sectional observational study included patients who developed sepsis and septic shock due to community-acquired pneumonia and were admitted to the ICU.

Objective: Adenoid hypertrophy is a prevalent pediatric condition, often necessitating surgical intervention. Intranasal steroid administration shows promise as a conservative treatment, particularly by inducing apoptosis in adenoidal cells, leading to a reduction in adenoid size and inflammation. This study aims to characterize the expression profile of caspase-3 as an apoptotic inducer protein in inflammatory and epithelial adenoid tissues and explore its association with steroid administration.

: The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may cause acute respiratory failure, but also remains responsible for many other pathologies, including electrolyte disorders. SARS-CoV-2 infection causes disorders in many systems and can disrupt water homeostasis with thirst and appetite abnormalities. Dysnatremia affects prognosis, and may be associated with mortality in patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2.

Prognostic Significance of Thrombocytopenia and Mean Platelet Volume in COPD Patients with Acute Exacerbations in ICU Settings.

Med Sci Monit

July 2024

Anesthesiology and Reanimation Clinic/Intensive Care Department, Ankara Atatürk Sanatorium Training and Research Hospital, Health Sciences University, Ankara, Turkey.

BACKGROUND Platelets have important modulatory effects on inflammatory and immune-mediated pathways. Thrombocytopenia is a critical condition that is frequently encountered in the intensive care unit (ICU) and increases mortality. This retrospective study of 472 patients admitted to the ICU with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) aimed to evaluate thrombocytopenia and mean platelet volume (MPV) with prognosis and patient mortality.

Objectives: To determine the predisposing factors for lengthy intensive care unit stay of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with acute exacerbation.

Methods: The retrospective study was conducted after approval from the ethics review committee of Atatürk Sanatorium Training and Research Hospital, Turkey, and comprised data from January 1, 2017, to August 31, 2022, related to acute exacerbation chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients receiving intensive care unit treatment. Demographics, comorbidities, treatment, length of stay in hospital and in intensive care unit, and nutritional status were evaluated.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) extremely rarely metastasizes to the testis. To date, only three reports have documented bilateral testicular metastasis of RCC. Here, we review the ultrasonographic characteristics of testicular metastasis of renal cell carcinoma cases in the literature and present a 43-year-old patient with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease who was diagnosed with bilateral testicular metastasis of RCC many years after nephrectomy, with ultrasonographic-pathological correlation.

Purpose: Patients with lower urinary tract malformations (LUTM) were suspended from kidney transplantation (KT) programs in the past due to various concerns. Consequently, only a limited number of studies have explored this topic at hand. In this study, our objective was to perform a systematic review (SR) to evaluate the current evidence regarding KT outcomes as well as patient survival (PS), postoperative complications and urinary tract infections (UTI) in individuals with childhood LUTM.

Department of Biomedical Device Technology, Istanbul Gelişim University, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Background: Delayed puberty (DP) affects approximately 2% of adolescents. In most patients of both genders, delayed puberty is due to constitutional delay in growth and puberty (CDGP); it is a self-limiting condition starting later than usual during puberty but progressing normally. Other causes of DP include permanent hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and gonadal insufficiency.
