Implementation of written asthma action plan among asthma patients in Türkiye: a multicenter, cross-sectional, descriptive study.

Background/aim: There is currently no data from Türkiye on whether, following a diagnosis of asthma, patients are given an asthma action plan to implement. There is also no data on whether patients can manage their treatment based on the provided asthma action plans. The present study aimed to determine the use of asthma action plans in Türkiye and the awareness levels of patients about these plans.

Synergistic Protection of Vitamin B Complex and Alpha-Lipoic Acid Against Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Boosting Antioxidant Defenses in Rats.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of vitamin B complex and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) pre-treatments on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in rats, focusing on their potential to enhance antioxidant defense mechanisms and reduce post-ischemic liver damage. Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: sham group (n = 10), IRI group (n = 10), vitamin B group (n = 10), vitamin B + ALA group (n = 10). In the IRI, vitamin B, and vitamin B + ALA groups, the rats underwent 45 min of hepatic ischemia followed by 60 min of reperfusion.

Hydroxychloroquine Mitigates Cytokine Storm and Prevents Critical Illness Neuromyopathy in a Rat Sepsis Model.

It is known that critical illness and associated neuromuscular problems begin to appear in patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) for more than a week. The goal of this study was to research the role of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in the treatment of cytokine storm and critical illness neuromyopathy (CINM) in a rat sepsis model. Rats were assigned into three groups, and a feces intraperitoneal-injection group (FIP) procedure was carried out on 30 rats to induce a model of sepsis for critical illness polyneuromyopathy (CINM).

Different approach to M descriptor for future staging of oligometastatic disease in SCLC: A cross-sectional survival analysis.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of oligometastasis and the M descriptor on survival in small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective study included patients with newly diagnosed extensive-stage SCLC(ES-SCLC) from 2010 to 2020. Subgroups: Group 1: single metastasis in a single organ, Group 2: 2-5 metastases in a single organ, Group 3: 6 or more metastases in a single organ, and Group 4: metastases in two or more organs.

The Utility of C-Reactive Protein, Procalcitonin, and Leukocyte Values in Predicting the Prognosis of Patients with Pneumosepsis and Septic Shock.

The predictive value of changes in C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin, and leukocyte levels, which are commonly used in the diagnosis of infection in sepsis and septic shock, remains a topic of debate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of changes in CRP, procalcitonin, and leukocyte counts on the prognosis of 230 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with the diagnosis of sepsis and pneumonia-related septic shock between 1 April 2022 and 31 December 2023, and to investigate whether any of these markers have a superior predictive value over the others in forecasting prognosis. This single-center, retrospective, cross-sectional observational study included patients who developed sepsis and septic shock due to community-acquired pneumonia and were admitted to the ICU.

The Administration of Steroids and its Impact on Caspase-3 Expression in Pediatric Adenoid Hypertrophy.

Objective: Adenoid hypertrophy is a prevalent pediatric condition, often necessitating surgical intervention. Intranasal steroid administration shows promise as a conservative treatment, particularly by inducing apoptosis in adenoidal cells, leading to a reduction in adenoid size and inflammation. This study aims to characterize the expression profile of caspase-3 as an apoptotic inducer protein in inflammatory and epithelial adenoid tissues and explore its association with steroid administration.

Periorbital Tuberculosis: A Rare Case of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis.

Purpose: Orbital/periorbital tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon manifestation of extrapulmonary TB, presenting diagnostic challenges due to its varied clinical features that can mimic other diseases. This report aims to present a rare case of periorbital TB in a young man.

Dysnatremia as a Mortality Marker in Intensive Care Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Retrospective Study.

: The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may cause acute respiratory failure, but also remains responsible for many other pathologies, including electrolyte disorders. SARS-CoV-2 infection causes disorders in many systems and can disrupt water homeostasis with thirst and appetite abnormalities. Dysnatremia affects prognosis, and may be associated with mortality in patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2.

Prognostic Significance of Thrombocytopenia and Mean Platelet Volume in COPD Patients with Acute Exacerbations in ICU Settings.

BACKGROUND Platelets have important modulatory effects on inflammatory and immune-mediated pathways. Thrombocytopenia is a critical condition that is frequently encountered in the intensive care unit (ICU) and increases mortality. This retrospective study of 472 patients admitted to the ICU with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) aimed to evaluate thrombocytopenia and mean platelet volume (MPV) with prognosis and patient mortality.

Determination of predisposing factors for prolonged intensive care in patients with exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Objectives: To determine the predisposing factors for lengthy intensive care unit stay of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with acute exacerbation.

Methods: The retrospective study was conducted after approval from the ethics review committee of Atatürk Sanatorium Training and Research Hospital, Turkey, and comprised data from January 1, 2017, to August 31, 2022, related to acute exacerbation chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients receiving intensive care unit treatment. Demographics, comorbidities, treatment, length of stay in hospital and in intensive care unit, and nutritional status were evaluated.

Ultrasonographic characteristics of testicular renal cell carcinoma metastasis: A case report and literature review.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) extremely rarely metastasizes to the testis. To date, only three reports have documented bilateral testicular metastasis of RCC. Here, we review the ultrasonographic characteristics of testicular metastasis of renal cell carcinoma cases in the literature and present a 43-year-old patient with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease who was diagnosed with bilateral testicular metastasis of RCC many years after nephrectomy, with ultrasonographic-pathological correlation.

Does the pleth variability index have any predictive value for intraoperative respiratory problems in bariatric surgery?

Background/aim: We aimed to search the relationship between the preoperative PVI (pleth variability index) and intraoperative respiratory parameters to reveal whether PVI can be used as a prediction tool in bariatric surgery.

Work Experience of Intensive Care Nurses during the Period of the Pandemic: A Qualitative Study.

This study was conducted to describe the working experiences, feelings, and thoughts of nurses working in the intensive care unit (ICU) during the COVID-19 pandemic from their perspective. Empirical phenomenological approach, one of the qualitative study methods, was used to obtain detailed descriptions of the experiences of nurses working in the ICU during the COVID-19 outbreak in providing patient care. The research design is an in-depth interview technique.

Sonographic cortical bone thickness measurement: can it predict bone mineral density in the pediatric population?

Purpose: To explore sonographic cortical bone thickness (CoT) as a potential indicator of bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for screening and diagnosing pediatric osteoporosis.

Methods: A prospective study included 41 osteopenic or osteoporotic patients and 52 healthy children. Radius cortical thickness (R-CoT), tibial cortical thickness (T-CoT), and second metatarsal cortical thickness (M-CoT) were measured by B-mode ultrasound; CoT values were compared between groups and the correlation between BMD and CoT was examined.

Cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: A single-center experience.

Background: Delayed puberty (DP) affects approximately 2% of adolescents. In most patients of both genders, delayed puberty is due to constitutional delay in growth and puberty (CDGP); it is a self-limiting condition starting later than usual during puberty but progressing normally. Other causes of DP include permanent hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and gonadal insufficiency.

Advances in laser technology and surgical telescopic systems have propelled retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) to the forefront as a viable alternative to percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Currently, RIRS is being increasingly utilized as a treatment option, even for kidney stones larger than 2 cm. In this narrative review, we aimed to take a snapshot of current practice in renal stone treatment and the latest technological and technical developments and to evaluate the efficacy of RIRS in larger renal stones.
