Equipped with an early social predisposition immediately post-birth, humans typically form associations with mothers and other family members through exposure learning, canalized by a prenatally formed predisposition of visual preference to biological motion, face configuration, and other cues of animacy. If impaired, reduced preferences can lead to social interaction impairments such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) via misguided canalization. Despite being taxonomically distant, domestic chicks could also follow a homologous developmental trajectory toward adaptive socialization through imprinting, which is guided via predisposed preferences similar to those of humans, thereby suggesting that chicks are a valid animal model of ASD.

Δ-3-Oxosteroid 5β-reductase () deficiency typically causes severe cholestasis occurs in newborns, leading to death unless patients are treated with primary bile acids. However, we encountered an deficiency patient treated with only ursodeoxycholic acid who had cholestasis until about 1 year of age but then grew up healthy without further treatment. We also have been following other healthy patients with mutation who have never developed cholestasis and have not been treated.

α-Defensin 5 is known to be secreted by Paneth cells in the small intestine and plays an important role in eliminating pathogenic microorganisms. It has been reported that a decrease in α-defensin 5 level in the human small intestine is a risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Furthermore, P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a member of the ATP-binding cassette transporter superfamily, encoded by the ABCB1/MDR1 gene, plays an important role in the front line of host defense by protecting the gastrointestinal barrier from xenobiotic accumulation and may contribute to the development and persistence of IBD.

D-serine has a role as an endogenous allosteric agonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor in the mammalian brain. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is a mild neurodevelopmental disorder with inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity as its core symptoms. We previously revealed that an AD/HD animal model, juvenile stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP/Ezo) exhibited functional abnormalities in N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the prefrontal cortex. D-serine is an endogenous co-ligand that acts on the glycine-binding site of NMDA receptors, which is essential for the physiological activation of NMDA receptors.

We encountered a 30-year-old woman with remarkably elevated luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, as measured by electrochemiluminescent immunoassay (ECLIA), and no specific symptoms. We performed the following investigations: dilution linearity test, polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation test, immunoprecipitation test, protein G addition test, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The linearity of patient's serum was similar to that of a standard LH preparation, and non-specific reactions were not observed.
