Lifestyle factors, including diet and physical activity (PA), are known beneficial strategies to prevent and delay Alzheimer's disease (AD) development. Recently, microRNAs have emerged as potential biomarkers in multiple diseases, including AD. The aim of this review was to analyze the available information on the modulatory effect of lifestyle on microRNA expression in AD.

Prehosp Disaster Med

October 2023

CRIMEDIM - Center for Research and Training in Disaster Medicine, Humanitarian Aid, and Global Health, Università del Piemonte Orientale, Novara, Italy.

The application and provision of prehospital care in disasters and mass-casualty incident response in Europe is currently being explored for opportunities to improve practice. The objective of this translational science study was to align common principles of approach and action and to identify how technology can assist and enhance response. To achieve this objective, the application of a modified Delphi methodology study based on statements derived from key findings of a scoping review was undertaken.

Background: Promoter hypermethylation of tumour suppressor genes is frequently observed during the malignant transformation of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, whether this epigenetic mechanism is functional in cancer or is a mere consequence of the carcinogenic process remains to be elucidated.

Results: In this work, we performed an integrative multi-omic approach to identify gene candidates with strong correlations between DNA methylation and gene expression in human CRC samples and a set of 8 colon cancer cell lines.

Tumor relapse is linked to rapid chemoresistance and represents a bottleneck for cancer therapy success. Engagement of a reduced proliferation state is a non-mutational mechanism exploited by cancer cells to bypass therapy-induced cell death. Through combining functional pulse-chase experiments in engineered cells and transcriptomic analyses, we identify DPPA3 as a master regulator of slow-cycling and chemoresistant phenotype in colorectal cancer (CRC).

The combined use of fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and single-cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SC-ICP-MS) is reported, for the first time, in this work. It is applied to evaluate the differences between the cellular uptake of ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles (FeNPs) loaded with cisplatin(IV) prodrug (FeNPs-Pt(IV)) and cisplatin regarding cell viability. For this aim, FACS is applied to separate viable, apoptotic, and necrotic A2780 ovarian cancer cells after exposing them to the nanotransported prodrug and cisplatin, respectively.

Spondyloarthritis is a group of immune-mediated rheumatic disorders that significantly impact patients' physical function and quality of life. Patients with spondyloarthritis experience a greater prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders, such as obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus, and these comorbidities are associated with increased spondyloarthritis disease activity and risk of cardiovascular events. This narrative review summarizes the evidence for a physiological link between inflammatory status and cardiometabolic comorbidities in spondyloarthritis, as well as the impact of interleukin (IL)-17 blockade versus other molecular mechanisms in patients with cardiometabolic conditions.

  • Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is traditionally used to measure brain activity by detecting changes in tissue oxygenation through near-infrared light.
  • Recent studies indicate that fNIRS can also potentially enhance neural activity through a process known as photobiomodulation (PBM), rather than just serving as a measurement tool.
  • In experiments, healthy participants using an active fNIRS device experienced faster reaction times and improved accuracy on cognitive tests, while a control group using a non-functional device showed no benefits, suggesting that the neuromodulatory effects of fNIRS should be further explored in future research.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied certain genes related to a substance that helps keep lungs healthy.
  • They looked at data from many people to see how these genes might be linked to lung cancer risk.
  • They discovered two specific gene changes (called SNPs) that could either increase or decrease the chances of getting lung cancer, especially in smokers.

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had important consequences on the health system. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were a key element in the response and were forced to modify their daily procedures. The main objective of this study was to find out if there were differences in response times and in the profile of patients treated by the Advanced Life Support (ALS) units of Servicio de Asistencia Médica Urgente (SAMU)-Asturias, the EMS of the Principality of Asturias, between the pre-pandemic period and the pandemic period.

Introduction: Paragangliomas (PGL), a type of neuroendocrine tumor, pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to their potential for unpredictable locations and asymptomatic presentation. Misdiagnosis of peripancreatic PGLs, particularly as pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PANNETs), is a pressing issue as it can negatively impact both pre- and post-treatment decision-making. The aim of our study was to identify microRNA markers for the reliable differential diagnosis of peripancreatic PGLs and PANNETs, addressing a crucial unmet need in the field and advancing the standard of care for these patients.

Circulating miRNA expression in long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Sci Rep

May 2023

Endocrinology, Nutrition, Diabetes and Obesity Group (ENDO), Health Research Institute of the Principality of Asturias (ISPA), Av. Hospital Universitario s/n, 33011, Oviedo, Asturias, Spain.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease which results in inefficient regulation of glucose homeostasis and can lead to different vascular comorbidities through life. In this study we aimed to analyse the circulating miRNA expression profile of patients with type 1 diabetes, and with no other associated pathology. For this, fasting plasma was obtained from 85 subjects.

Unhealthy dietary habits determined during childhood may represent a risk factor to many of the chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adulthood. Mediterranean Diet (MD) adherence in children and adolescents (8-16 years) living in Spain was investigated using the KIDMED questionnaire in a comparative analysis of two cross-sectional nationwide representative studies: enKid (1998-2000, = 1001) and PASOS (2019-2020, = 3540). Taking into account the educational level of pupils, as well as the characteristics of the place of living, a significant association was found between a KIDMED score ≥ 8 (optimal MD adherence) and primary education as well as residency in an area of <50,000 inhabitants, while living in the southern regions was associated with non-optimal MD adherence ( < 0.

Cardiac adipose tissue (CAT) has become an important target for the reduction of disease risk. Supervised exercise programs have shown potential to "significantly" reduce CAT; however, the impact of different exercise modalities is not clear, and the relationships between CAT, physical activity (PA) levels and fitness (PFit) remain unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between CAT, PA and PFit, and to explore the effects of different exercise modalities in a group of women with obesity.

Article Synopsis
  • Childhood obesity is a growing public health concern globally, with socioeconomic status (SES) being a key factor influencing its prevalence among children and adolescents.
  • A study involving 2791 Spanish children aged 8 to 16 revealed that indicators of SES, such as parental education and employment status, are significantly linked to rates of obesity, severe obesity, and abdominal obesity.
  • Higher SES, characterized by university education, employment, and higher income, is strongly associated with lower rates of obesity; for example, children in the highest SES category had much lower odds of obesity compared to those in the lowest category.
