The lack of effective first-line antibiotic treatments against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and the worldwide dissemination of resistant strains, are the main drivers of a worsening global health crisis. β-lactam antibiotics have been the backbone of therapeutic armamentarium against gonococci. However, we are lacking critical insights to design rationally optimized therapies.

Personalized nutrition (PN) has gained much attention as a tool for empowerment of consumers to promote changes in dietary behavior, optimizing health status and preventing diet related diseases. Generalized implementation of PN faces different obstacles, one of the most relevant being metabolic characterization of the individual. Although omics technologies allow for assessment the dynamics of metabolism with unprecedented detail, its translatability as affordable and simple PN protocols is still difficult due to the complexity of metabolic regulation and to different technical and economical constrains.

The paradigm shift in the endodontic field from replacement toward regenerative therapies has witnessed the ever-growing research in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine targeting pulp-dentin complex in the past few years. Abundant literature on the subject that has been produced, however, is scattered over diverse areas of knowledge. Moreover, the terminology and concepts are not always consensual, reflecting the range of research fields addressing this subject, from endodontics to biology, genetics, and engineering, among others.

Insufficient physical activity (PA) in children is considered one of the major contributors to obesity and cardiometabolic complications later in life. Although regular exercise may contribute to disease prevention and health promotion, reliable early biomarkers are required to objectively discern people performing low PA from those who exercise enough. Here, we aimed to identify potential transcript-based biomarkers through the analysis of a whole-genome microarray in peripheral blood cells (PBC) from physically less active (n = 10) comparing with more active (n = 10) children.

Although nutrient profiling systems can empower consumers towards healthier food choices, there is still a need to assess diet quality to obtain an overall perspective. The purpose of this study was to develop a diet profiling algorithm (DPA) to evaluate nutritional diet quality, which gives a final score from 1 to 3 with an associated color (green-yellow-orange). It ranks the total carbohydrate/total fiber ratio, and energy from saturated fats and sodium as potentially negative inputs, while fiber and protein are assumed as positive items.

We developed a mobile application for cervical rehabilitation that uses a non-invasive camera-based head-tracker sensor for monitoring neck movements. The intended user population should be able to use the mobile application in their own mobile device, but mobile devices have different camera sensors and screen dimensions that could affect the user performance and neck movement monitoring. In this work, we studied the influence of mobile devices type on camera-based monitoring of neck movements for rehabilitation purposes.

Given the growing clinical-epidemiological threat posed by the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance, new therapeutic options are urgently needed, especially against top nosocomial pathogens such as those within the ESKAPE group. In this scenario, research is pushed to explore therapeutic alternatives and, among these, those oriented toward reducing bacterial pathogenic power could pose encouraging options. However, the first step in developing these antivirulence weapons is to find weak points in the bacterial biology to be attacked with the goal of dampening pathogenesis.

Loss of protein expression of the tumor suppressor PTEN is associated with increased cancer aggressiveness, decreased tumor immune infiltration, and resistance to immune and targeted therapies in melanoma. We assessed a unique cohort of eight melanoma samples with focal loss of PTEN protein expression to understand the features and mechanisms of PTEN loss in this disease. We compared the PTEN-negative (PTEN[-]) areas to their adjacent PTEN-positive (PTEN[+]) areas using DNA sequencing, DNA methylation, RNA expression, digital spatial profiling, and immunohistochemical platforms.
