Latin Americans have a rich genetic make-up that translates into heterogeneous fractions of the autosomal genome in runs of homozygosity (F) and heterogeneous types and proportions of indigenous American ancestry. While autozygosity has been linked to several human diseases, very little is known about the relationship between inbreeding, genetic ancestry, and cancer risk in Latin Americans. Chile has one of the highest incidences of gallbladder cancer (GBC) in the world, and we investigated the association between inbreeding, GBC, gallstone disease (GSD), and body mass index (BMI) in 4029 genetically admixed Chileans.

  • Perceived social support plays a crucial role in predicting the severity of PTSD and complex PTSD symptoms after experiencing trauma, but gender differences in responses to this support have not been extensively studied.
  • In a study involving 2,483 adults across 39 countries, it was found that females reported higher PTSD and complex PTSD symptoms compared to males, while no significant gender differences in perceived social support were observed.
  • Both male and female participants with low perceived social support experienced greater PTSD and complex PTSD symptoms, with some evidence suggesting that the relationship between perceived social support and PTSD symptoms might be stronger for males.

Childhood maltreatment is linked to larger preferred interpersonal distances towards friends and strangers across the globe.

Transl Psychiatry

August 2024

Department of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine, University Hospital, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is thought to be associated with altered responses to social stimuli and interpersonal signals. However, limited evidence exists that CM is linked to larger comfortable interpersonal distance (CID) - the physical distance humans prefer towards others during social interactions. However, no previous study has investigated this association in a comprehensive sample, yielding sufficient statistical power.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes virus-induced-senescence. There is an association between shorter telomere length (TL) in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and hospitalization, severity, or even death. However, it remains unknown whether virus-induced-senescence is reversible.

  • - The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology analyzed systematic reviews using GRADE to assess the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and active smoking on asthma-related issues, focusing primarily on longitudinal studies.
  • - Prenatal and postnatal ETS are linked to an increased risk of recurrent wheezing and new-onset asthma, with moderate to low certainty evidence indicating that combined ETS exposure heightens these risks.
  • - Active smoking is associated with severe asthma exacerbations and poor asthma control, also backed by moderate certainty evidence, alongside potential impacts on quality of life and lung function.

An epigenomic approach was used to study the impact of maternal pregestational body mass index (BMI) on the placenta and umbilical cord methylomes and their potential effect on the offspring's metabolic phenotype. DNA methylome was assessed in 24 paired placenta and umbilical cord samples. The differentially methylated CpGs associated with maternal pregestational BMI were identified and the metabolic pathways and the potentially related diseases affected by their annotated genes were determined.

Background: Patients provide a unique, irreplaceable, and essential perspective in evaluating patient safety. The suite of Patient Reported Experiences and Outcomes of Safety in Primary Care (PREOS-PC) tools are a notable exception to the scarcity of patient-reported patient safety measures. Full evaluation of their performance has only been attempted for the English version, thereby limiting its international applicability.

Child maltreatment and resilience in adulthood: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Eur J Psychotraumatol

November 2023

South African PTSD Research Programme of Excellence, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.

Although child maltreatment (CM) has been linked to health problems and poor psychosocial functioning, not all individuals exposed to CM develop or experience negative consequences later in life. This suggests that some individuals show resilience after being exposed to CM. However, conclusions have been limited by inconsistent findings across different CM subtypes and resilience domains.

Unit of Viral Infection and Immunity, Centro Nacional de Mirobiología, Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), 28222, Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has a detrimental impact on disease progression. Increasing evidence points to extracellular vesicles (EVs) as important players of the host-viral cross-talk. The microRNAs (miRNAs), as essential components of EVs cargo, are key regulators of normal cellular processes and also promote viral replication, viral pathogenesis, and disease progression.
