Background: Broader autism phenotype (BAP) refers to the expression of behavioral and cognitive dispositions similar to autism spectrum disorder. The present study investigated whether mothers' BAP was prospectively associated with maternal attachment, and if postpartum depression modified this association.

Methods: The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS) is a national and government-funded birth cohort study that began in January 2011.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined low birth weight (LBW) prevalence and the link between maternal body weight (BMI) and birth weight in several African countries, including Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, and Uganda.
  • - Findings showed varying LBW rates, with the highest in Senegal (15.7%) and significant correlations between underweight mothers and LBW births in most countries, notably Senegal.
  • - The research suggests that addressing nutritional status in women of childbearing age may help reduce LBW rates, indicating a need for more detailed studies to understand the maternal weight and birth weight relationship.

To investigate the effect and mechanism of ginsenoside Rg1 antagonizing bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) aging, which contribute to the delaying senescence of hematopoietic cells in vitro and in vivo. Rg1 could reduce the effects of senility agent on BMSCs by decreasing the rate of SA-Gal positive cells, and increasing the proliferative ability of CCK8 cells. After BMNCs co-cultured with BMSCs which were treated by Rg1 in vitro, compared with BMNCs co-cultured with BMSCs from aging group, percentage of positive cell SA-Gal staining was decreased, the formation ability of CFU-Mix was enhanced, the proliferative ability was increased, and the apoptosis rate was decreased.

Having access to improved water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities constitute a key component of healthy living and quality of life. Prolonged exposure to insanitary living conditions can significantly enhance the burden of infectious diseases among children and affect nutritional status and growth. In this study we examined the prevalence of some common infectious diseases/disease symptoms of childhood among under-five children in Nigeria, and the association between the occurrence of these diseases with household’s access to WASH facilities.

July 2018

Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota, United States of America.

The goal of this study was to evaluate survival of important viral pathogens of livestock in animal feed ingredients imported daily into the United States under simulated transboundary conditions. Eleven viruses were selected based on global significance and impact to the livestock industry, including Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV), Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV), African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV), Influenza A Virus of Swine (IAV-S), Pseudorabies virus (PRV), Nipah Virus (NiV), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV), Swine Vesicular Disease Virus (SVDV), Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV), Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2) and Vesicular Exanthema of Swine Virus (VESV). Surrogate viruses with similar genetic and physical properties were used for 6 viruses.

Article Synopsis
  • China reformed its public hospitals in 2012, and a study analyzed the technical efficiency (TE) and productivity of 127 county hospitals across Eastern, Central, and Western China from 2012-2015 using bootstrapping data envelopment analysis (DEA).
  • The analysis revealed varying levels of TE, with Eastern and Western China performing better than Central China, and a general trend of increasing productivity across all regions despite some negative changes in pure technical efficiency (PTE).
  • More than 60% of the county hospitals operated at decreasing returns to scale, indicating significant potential for efficiency improvement, prompting calls for action from decision makers to address inefficiencies.

Background: This study investigated the effect of using adenovirus-mediated expression of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (Ad-BMP-2) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in combination with a demineralized bone matrix (DBM) to repair osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in Beagle dogs.

Methods: A total of 30 Beagle dogs were selected for the isolation of BMSCs, which were cultured and transfected with the recombinant adenovirus vector Ad-BMP2-bFGF-GFP (carrying BMP-2 and bFGF) or a control adenovirus plasmid (encoding green fluorescent protein (Ad-GFP)). The expression of the transfected BMP-2 and bFGF proteins was detected by Western blotting.

Objective: Chronic diseases are complex and persistent clinical conditions that require close collaboration among patients and health care providers in the implementation of long-term and integrated care programs. However, current solutions focus partially on intensive interventions at hospitals rather than on continuous and personalized chronic disease management. This study aims to fill this gap by providing computerized clinical decision support during follow-up assessments of chronically ill patients at home.

Influenza, a disease caused by a respiratory virus, sickened over 5,043,127 citizens in Shenzhen, China, from January 2014 to April 2016. An accurate forecasting of outbreaks of influenza-like illness (ILI, here we refer to ILI as the upper respiratory infection) could facilitate public health officials to suggest public health actions earlier. In this study, a random forest regression constructed with a one-year period of factors was adopted to forecast the weekly ILI rate using the clinical data from Shenzhen Health Information Center.

Evidence supports the benefits to families of relationships with professionals that build on the concept of partnership, but there are few studies in the literature of strategies involving joint education for parents and professionals to enhance the capacity of parents of children with special healthcare needs to be effective interprofessional partners. Since 2007, parents of children with special healthcare needs have participated alongside graduate students from five different profession-based training programmes in a structured interprofessional leadership programme. The aims of this summative evaluation study were to elicit the influences of this training model on parents' capacity to partner with both health professionals and other parents and explore features of the training that facilitated these partnership skills.

The association between long-term variation of postdiagnosis platelets and survival of pancreatic cancer (PC) has never been discussed by using dynamic survival analysis method. In this retrospective study, we analyzed 311 histologically confirmed PC patients identified from a mega population-based electronic inpatients database from 2012 to 2013 in China. Counting process approach was applied to restructure the original survival data, the association between post-diagnosis platelet count and overall survival (OS) of PC was evaluated by multiple failure-time Cox proportional hazards model.

Eur J Cancer

March 2016

Section of Cancer Surveillance, International Agency for Research on Cancer, 150 Cours Albert Thomas, 69372 CEDEX 08 Lyon, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Most countries in South-Eastern Europe (SEE) have lower rates of malignant melanoma (MM) but higher mortality compared to North-Western Europe (NWE), revealing concerning trends in both incidence and mortality.
  • Using data from 11 cancer registries in SEE, the study analyzed MM trends by sex and age from 2000-2010, finding increasing incidence and specific rises in mortality, particularly among middle-aged and older populations in several countries.
  • The study highlights the need for better cancer registration and awareness of early detection to close the gap in melanoma outcomes between SEE and NWE, as healthcare systems may struggle to manage advanced cases.
