Purpose: The Shaanxi Blood Donor Cohort was set up to investigate the impact of blood donation on the health of donors compared with non-blood donors. The specific aims of the study include (1) identifying the geographical and temporal trends of incidence for diseases in both blood donors and non-blood donors; (2) assessing the impact of environmental exposures, lifestyle, body mass index (BMI) and blood type on disease burdens, stratified between blood donors and non-blood donors; and (3) among blood donors, investigating if regular blood donation has a positive impact on donors' health profiles, based on a cohort with a mixed retrospective and prospective study design.

Participants: A total of 3.

Department of Public Health, Institute for Global Health and Epidemiology, Faculty of Health Sciences and Social Work, Trnava University, Trnava, Slovakia.

Article Synopsis
  • Injury is a significant public health concern in Europe, with notable differences in injury death rates and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) across sub-regions and countries, particularly between Eastern, Central, and Western Europe.
  • The study analyzed GBD 2019 data from 44 European countries over 20 years, focusing on injury mortality and DALY rates by cause and sex while assessing inequalities based on country comparisons.
  • Findings reveal that Eastern Europe has the highest injury death rates (80 deaths per 100,000), while Italy has the lowest injury DALY rate, indicating that males experience greater disparities in injury impact than females.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease whose etiology is not yet fully understood, and their course is characterized by periods of exacerbation and remission. In quite a few cases, actual disease remission may also accompany with inflammatory bowel disease (IBS)-like symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea, may greatly impact quality of life. An army of strong evidence to support the FODMAPs diet (LFD) compounds as an effective dietary approach to IBS treatment.

Unlabelled: Cervical cell classification has important clinical significance in cervical cancer screening at early stages. However, there are fewer public cervical cancer smear cell datasets, the weights of each classes' samples are unbalanced, the image quality is uneven, and the classification research results based on CNN tend to overfit. To solve the above problems, we propose a cervical cell image generation model based on taming transformers (CCG-taming transformers) to provide high-quality cervical cancer datasets with sufficient samples and balanced weights, we improve the encoder structure by introducing SE-block and MultiRes-block to improve the ability to extract information from cervical cancer cells images; we introduce Layer Normlization to standardize the data, which is convenient for the subsequent non-linear processing of the data by the ReLU activation function in feed forward; we also introduce SMOTE-Tomek Links to balance the source data set and the number of samples and weights of the images we use Tokens-to-Token Vision Transformers (T2T-ViT) combing transfer learning to classify the cervical cancer smear cell image dataset to improve the classification performance.

Background: An aging population with a burden of chronic diseases puts increasing pressure on health care systems. Early prediction of the hospital length of stay (LOS) can be useful in optimizing the allocation of medical resources, and improving healthcare quality. However, the data available at the point of admission (PoA) are limited, making it difficult to forecast the LOS accurately.

Background: Multimorbidity represents a global health challenge, which requires a more global understanding of multimorbidity patterns and trends. However, the majority of studies completed to date have often relied on self-reported conditions, and a simultaneous assessment of the entire spectrum of chronic disease co-occurrence, especially in developing regions, has not yet been performed.

Objective: We attempted to provide a multidimensional approach to understand the full spectrum of chronic disease co-occurrence among general inpatients in southwest China, in order to investigate multimorbidity patterns and temporal trends, and assess their age and sex differences.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) exhibits elevated comorbidity. However, few studies have systematically analyzed the comorbid status of IHD patients with respect to the entire spectrum of chronic diseases. This study applied network analysis to provide a complete picture of physical and mental comorbidities in hospitalized patients with IHD using large-scale administrative data.

Background: Stroke risk assessment is an important means of primary prevention, but the applicability of existing stroke risk assessment scales in the Chinese population has always been controversial. A prospective study is a common method of medical research, but it is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Medical big data has been demonstrated to promote disease risk factor discovery and prognosis, attracting broad research interest.

February 2022

Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, 5500 Mendoza, Argentina; Institute of Medical and Experimental Biology of Cuyo, UNCuyo CONICET, 5500 Mendoza, Argentina. Electronic address:

Light pollution is a global environmental issue that affects photosensitive organisms. For instance, several researchers have recognized melatonin suppression in humans as a direct cause of long-term exposure to high artificial light levels at night. Others have identified low melatonin levels as a risk factor for a higher prevalence of hormone-sensitive cancer.

Background: Depression is a psychiatric disorder with a high comorbidity burden; however, previous comorbidity studies predominately focused on a few common diseases and relied on self-reported data. We aimed to investigate the comorbid status of depression concerning the entire spectrum of chronic diseases using network analysis.

Method: Totally, 22,872 depressed inpatients and one-to-one matched controls were enrolled in the retrospective study.

In China, overcrowding at hospitals increases the workload of medical staff, which may negatively impact the quality of medical services. This study empirically examined the impact of hospital admissions on the quality of healthcare services in Chinese hospitals. Specifically, we estimated the impact of the number of hospital admissions per day on a patient's length of stay (LOS) and hospital mortality rate using both ordinary least squares (OLS) and instrumental variable (IV) methods.

The short-term morbidity effects of gaseous air pollutants on mental disorders (MDs), and the corresponding morbidity and economic burdens have not been well studied. We aimed to explore the associations of ambient sulfur dioxide (SO), nitrogen dioxide (NO), ozone (O) and carbon monoxide (CO) with MDs hospitalizations in 17 Chinese cities during 2015-2018, and estimate the attributable risk and economic costs of MDs hospitalizations associated with gaseous pollutants. City-specific relationships between gaseous pollutants and MDs hospitalizations were evaluated using over-dispersed generalized additive models, then combined to obtain the pooled effect.

Concerns were raised regarding the role feed and feed ingredients play for risk of disease introduction and dissemination after PEDV was first identified mid-2013. Subsequently there has been a body of research and reviews completed. The results suggest a subset of contaminated feed ingredients could serve as vehicles for transboundary disease introduction into the United States.

Melanoma is one of the most dangerous skin cancers. The current melanoma segmentation is mainly based on FCNs (fully connected networks) and U-Net. Nevertheless, these two kinds of neural networks are prone to parameter redundancy, and the gradient of neural networks disappears that occurs when the neural network backpropagates as the neural network gets deeper, which will reduce the Jaccard index of the skin lesion image segmentation model.

To reduce the heavy reliance of public hospitals on drug sales and use of advanced technologies and to contain the escalating medical expenditures, Beijing implemented two rounds of comprehensive public hospital reform in 2017 and 2019, respectively. The first round focused on separating drug sales from hospital revenue (reform1), and the second round extended to include zero markup on medical consumables and price adjustments for medical services (reform2). To estimate how these two rounds of reform have affected public hospitals' revenue structures, we used observational data of medical revenues from 2016 to 2019 covering 354 healthcare facilities.
