Photoacoustic microscopy has demonstrated outstanding performance in high-resolution functional imaging. However, in the process of photoacoustic imaging, the photoacoustic signals will be polluted by inevitable background noise. Besides, the image quality is compromised due to the biosafety limitation of the laser.

Machine-Learning Predictions of Cochlear Implant Functional Outcomes: A Systematic Review.

Ear Hear

January 2025

San Francisco Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, University of California, San Francisco, California, USA.

Objectives: Cochlear implant (CI) user functional outcomes are challenging to predict because of the variability in individual anatomy, neural health, CI device characteristics, and linguistic and listening experience. Machine learning (ML) techniques are uniquely poised for this predictive challenge because they can analyze nonlinear interactions using large amounts of multidimensional data. The objective of this article is to systematically review the literature regarding ML models that predict functional CI outcomes, defined as sound perception and production.

Both women and men are now confronted with the grave threat of cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It is estimated that 80% of women may encounter HPV over their lives. In the preponderance of cases involving anal, head and neck, oral, oropharyngeal, penile, vaginal, vulvar, and cervical malignancies, high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) is the causative agent.

Background: High-throughput behavioral analysis is important for drug discovery, toxicological studies, and the modeling of neurological disorders such as autism and epilepsy. Zebrafish embryos and larvae are ideal for such applications because they are spawned in large clutches, develop rapidly, feature a relatively simple nervous system, and have orthologs to many human disease genes. However, existing software for video-based behavioral analysis can be incompatible with recordings that contain dynamic backgrounds or foreign objects, lack support for multiwell formats, require expensive hardware, and/or demand considerable programming expertise.

Infectious diseases pose significant challenges to Norwegian Atlantic salmon aquaculture. Vaccines are critical for disease prevention; however, a deeper understanding of the immune system is essential to improve vaccine efficacy. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is the main antibody involved in the systemic immune response of teleosts, including Atlantic salmon.

Adapting a style based generative adversarial network to create images depicting cleft lip deformity.

Sci Rep

Division of Plastic, Craniofacial and Hand Surgery, Sidra Medicine, and Weill Cornell Medical College, C1-121, Al Gharrafa St, Ar Rayyan, Doha, Qatar.

Training a machine learning system to evaluate any type of facial deformity is impeded by the scarcity of large datasets of high-quality, ethics board-approved patient images. We have built a deep learning-based cleft lip generator called CleftGAN designed to produce an almost unlimited number of high-fidelity facsimiles of cleft lip facial images with wide variation. A transfer learning protocol testing different versions of StyleGAN as the base model was undertaken.

Apical and basal dendrites of pyramidal neurons receive anatomically and functionally distinct inputs, implying compartment-level functional diversity during behavior. To test this, we imaged in vivo calcium signals from soma, apical dendrites, and basal dendrites in mouse hippocampal CA3 pyramidal neurons during head-fixed navigation. To capture compartment-specific population dynamics, we developed computational tools to automatically segment dendrites and extract accurate fluorescence traces from densely labeled neurons.

Electronic address:

Although the deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flap is a mainstay in mandibular reconstruction, its multi-segmental utilization is infrequently reported, primarily due to concerns regarding the variable cutaneous component and potentially inadequate vascular supply to multi-block segments. This retrospective study analyzed the outcomes of 86 patients undergoing mandibular reconstruction with multi-segmental DCIA flaps, compared to 167 patients who received conventional single-segmental flaps. The survival rate for multi-segmental flaps was comparable to that of single-segmental flaps (100% vs.

Jawline improvement using patient-specific angle implants with virtual planning in orthognathic surgery.

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Head and Neck Institute, University Hospital Center of Nice, 31 avenue de Valombrose, 06100, Nice, France; Nice Côte d'Azur Clinical Research Unit (UR2CA), France. Electronic address:

There has been a recent increase in the global demand for jawline augmentation. Managing angle definition in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery remains challenging owing to the characteristics of classic mandibular osteotomy, which mostly allows sagittal mandibular movements but cannot modify the ramus height. The advent of computer-assisted surgical planning and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing techniques for patient-specific implant fabrication has introduced new methods for jawline management.

As available treatments in obstructive sleep apnea are all associated with side-effects or adherence problems, there is a need for alternative treatment options. In this randomized, open, parallel-group intervention study, the effect of head extension by cervical collar was evaluated in patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea. One-hundred patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea (apneas and hypopneas per estimated hours asleep = respiratory events index: 15-30) were randomized to either lifestyle intervention, or cervical collar in combination with lifestyle intervention.

Uncommon epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) pose therapeutic challenge due to limited response to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). This study presents preclinical evidence and mechanistic insights into the combination of lazertinib, a third-generation EGFR-TKI; and amivantamab, an EGFR-MET bispecific antibody, for treating NSCLC with uncommon EGFR mutations. The lazertinib-amivantamab combination demonstrates significant antitumor activity in patient-derived models with uncommon EGFR mutations either before treatment or after progressing on EGFR-TKIs.

Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatic Medicine, University Hospital of Psychiatry II, Medical University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria. Electronic address:

The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Utility - Core 10 Dimensions (QLU-C10D) adds a preference-based scoring algorithm to the EORTC measurement portfolio. It is built on the most widely used health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measure in oncology, the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire - Core 30 (QLQ-C30), allowing for the calculation of both HRQoL profiles and health utilities. This is an important advancement for integrating cancer-specific values into health economic evaluations and decision making, offering greater content validity and statistical power than some generic measures.
