Functional attributes of the anterior mesendoderm in patterning the anterior neural structures during head formation in the mouse.

Induction of the neural ectoderm and the patterning of embryonic brain are the requisite organizing activity for head formation. Studies of loss-of-function mouse mutants that displayed a head truncation phenotype pointed to a key functional role of the anterior mesendoderm in anterior neural patterning. In this overview, we highlight the learning of the molecular attributes underpinning the formation of the anterior mesendoderm, the acquisition of ectoderm competence in the epiblast and the patterning of the embryonic brain during gastrulation and neurulation.

Relationship between muscular mass, inflammatory status, tumor metabolic activity and oral intake in head and neck cancer at the outset of management.

Background And Aims: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are often malnourished with a low muscular mass at the outset of management. This is thought to be mainly due to poor nutritional intake. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between tumor metabolic activity, inflammatory status and body composition in HNC patients.

Amino acid transporter OsATL13 coordinately regulates rice yield and quality by transporting phenylalanine and methionine.

Amino acids are crucial nutrients for growth in crops. In this study, we found an amino acid transporter-like 13 (OsATL13), that coordinately determined rice yield and quality. OsATL13 was primarily expressed in the root and panicle, its protein was localized on plasma membrane, and it principally transported phenylalanine and methionine.

Retinal and Choroidal Circulation Impairments in Fanconi Anemia.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of Fanconi anemia (FA) on retinal and choroidal microvasculature using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA).

Design: Cohort study with age-matched controls.

Subjects And Participants: This study included 11 eyes from 11 patients diagnosed with FA and 12 eyes from 12 age-matched healthy controls.

Surveillance of Dual-Mobility Hip Systems: Damage Mode and Clinical Data Analysis.

Background: Hip instability following total hip arthroplasty (THA) is among the most common indications for revision surgery. The implantation of dual-mobility (DM) systems, designed to improve stability, continues to rise, and thus, characterizing in vivo implant damage modes is paramount.

Methods: Under an implant retrieval protocol, 51 DM THA systems were analyzed.

Extracellular volume expansion drives vertebrate axis elongation.

The vertebrate bauplan is primarily established via the formation of embryonic tissues in a head-to-tail progression. The mechanics of this elongation, which requires the presomitic mesoderm (PSM), remain poorly understood. Here, we find that avian PSM explants can elongate autonomously when physically confined in vitro, producing a pushing force promoting posterior elongation of the embryo.

Exploration of symptom cluster patterns and their trajectory in esophageal cancer surgery patients.

Purpose: To investigate symptom burden and symptom cluster trajectories in patients undergoing surgery for esophageal cancer.

Methods: A convenience sample of 210 patients who underwent thoracoscopic surgery for esophageal cancer was included from July to December 2023. The symptoms of the patients were evaluated at the following time points: preoperatively (T0), 1-3 days postoperatively (T1), 7 days postoperatively (T2), 1 month postoperatively (T3), and 3 months postoperatively (T4).

Prevalence of dry eye in Brazil: Home survey reveals differences in urban and rural regions.

Purpose: A random home visit search investigated the prevalence and predictors of Dry Eye (DE) symptoms in Brazil.

Methods: Through home visits to 420 urban and 180 rural residences in the countryside of Southeast Brazil, the Dry Eye Disease Short Questionnaire (DEDSQ) was applied to volunteers 40 years and older. The predictive value of the DEDSQ and the risk factors were investigated.

Is postoperative adjuvant therapy necessary for pT3N0 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma?

Background: The current NCCN guidelines advocate for the use of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in pT3N0 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). Here, we sought to evaluate whether postoperative RT/CRT may confer a survival advantage in pT3N0 patients who lack adverse pathological features.

Methods: A dataset of 852 pT3N0 OCSCC patients treated between 2018 and 2021 was analyzed.

Cochlear implantation and cognitive function in the older adult population: current state of the art and future perspectives.

Objectives: Hearing loss is associated with increased cognitive decline and incident dementia in older adults. Given the rapidly rising incidence of dementia, management of modifiable risk factors such as hearing loss, is essential to mitigate the impact on the individual and society in general. In this narrative review, we discuss the current state-of-art with respect to studying cognitive function before and after cochlear implantation in the elderly population.

Otolaryngological manifestations of cystic fibrosis in children: A systematic review.

Purpose: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive disorder in the Caucasian population. Otolaryngological manifestations pose a significant impact on the quality of life of children with CF. The primary aim of this review is to provide a state of the art update of current literature on the otolaryngological manifestations of CF in children.

ShadowGAN-Former: Reweighting self-attention based on mask for shadow removal.

Shadow removal remains a challenging visual task aimed at restoring the original brightness of shadow regions in images. Many existing methods overlook the implicit clues within non-shadow regions, leading to inconsistencies in the color, texture, and illumination of the reconstructed shadow-free images. To address these issues, we propose an efficient hybrid model of Transformer and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), named ShadowGAN-Former, which utilizes information from non-shadow regions to assist in shadow removal.

Timing in orthopaedic surgery - Rethinking traditional myths with a critical perspective.

Purpose: Standard operating procedures aim to achieve a standardized and assumedly high-quality therapy. However, in orthopaedic surgery, the aspect of temporal urgency is often based on surgical tradition and experience. At a time of evidence-based medicine, it is necessary to question these temporal guidelines.

Evaluating sperm characteristics from stripping and testicular extraction in northern pike (Esox lucius) with a focus on stability during storage.

The quality and quantity of stripped and testicular wild northern pike (Esox lucius) sperm was compared and the effectiveness of short-term storage was assessed. Stripped sperm (SS) was collected using abdominal massage. Next, the fish were decapitated and the testes were removed.

Appendiceal diverticulum diagnosed after appendectomy: Two case reports and literature review.

Introduction: Appendiceal diverticulitis is an uncommon pathology that imitates acute appendicitis and is usually treated by appendicectomy.

Cases Presentation: We present two cases: a 50-year-old female patient and a 35-year-old male patient, both of whom presented with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis and were managed accordingly. Final pathological examination confirmed the presence of an appendiceal diverticulum.

Acute effects of voluntary breathing patterns on postural control during walking.

Introduction: Breathing and postural control is reported to be both neuromuscularly and mechanically interdependent. To date, the effects of voluntary abdominal and thoracic breathing (VAB and VTB) on the EMG activity of muscles involved in both respiratory and postural functions, as well as gait biomechanics related to these breathing patterns, have not been investigated in young, healthy adults. The aim of the study was to evaluate the EMG responses of neck and trunk muscles, as well as the kinematic, stability, and kinetic parameters of gait induced by VAB and VTB compared to involuntary breathing (INB).

Although radiotherapy techniques are the primary treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC), they are still associated with substantial toxicity, and side effect. Machine learning (ML) based radiomics models for predicting toxicity mostly rely on features extracted from pre-treatment imaging data. This study aims to compare different models in predicting radiation-induced xerostomia and sticky saliva in both early and late stage of HNC patients using CT and MRI image features along with demographics and dosimetric information.

Introduction: Antisemitism and antisemitic incidents have been increasing in United States medical institutions since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023. Such incidents include anecdotal reports of antisemitic displays at medical school commencements. This study examined unprofessional behavior observed at the commencement ceremonies of the 25 US medical schools top-ranked for research excellence.

Effects of Hydration and a Hyaluronic Acid-Containing Lozenge on Voice Parameters in Conjunction With a Vocal Loading Test.

Purpose: This study explores the effects of water intake and a hyaluronic acid (HA)-containing lozenge on acoustic measurements and vocal oscillation patterns investigated after a vocal loading test (VLT).

Method: Ten healthy subjects (five females, five males) read out loud a standardized text for 10 min at a target level of 80 dB(A), measured 30 cm from the mouth, under three conditions but each after fasting for 2 hr: (a) drinking 0.7 l of water, (b) sucking an HA-containing lozenge, and (c) neither of both before the VLT.

Translation and validation of the Hearing Environments and Reflection on Quality of Life (HEAR-QL) questionnaire for preschool children in Dutch.

Objective: Early diagnosis, intervention and consistent follow-up of hearing loss is of great importance in children, given the broad impact of untreated childhood hearing loss. Currently, no hearing-specific QOL proxy questionnaire exists for preschool children with hearing loss in the Dutch language. Therefore, the aim of this study was to translate and validate the Preschool HEAR-QL questionnaire into Dutch.

Methods: Using the 2020 ACS TQIP database, we split patients into two groups based on their primary injury.

Self-Assembled Oligomers Facilitate Amino Acid-Driven CO Capture at the Air-Aqueous Interface.

Direct air capture of CO using amino acid absorbents, such as glycine or sarcosine, is constrained by the relatively slow mass transfer of CO through the air-aqueous interface. Our recent study showed a marked improvement in CO capture by introducing CO-permeable oligo-dimethylsiloxane (ODMS-MIM) oligomers with cationic (imidazolium, MIM) headgroups. In this work, we have employed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations in combination with subensemble analysis using network theory to provide a detailed molecular picture of the behavior of CO and the glycinate anions (Gly) at the ODMS-MIM decorated air-aqueous interfaces.

A head-to-head comparison of the adult EQ-5D-5L and youth EQ-5D-Y-5L in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis.

Background: Multiple diseases, such as Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), present at adolescent age and the impact on quality of life (QoL) prolongs into adulthood. For the EQ-5D, a commonly used instrument to measure QoL, the current guideline is ambiguous whether the youth or adult version is to be preferred at adolescent age. To assess which is most suitable, this study tested for equivalence along predefined criteria of the youth (EQ-5D-5L) and adult (EQ-5D-Y-5L) version in an adolescent population receiving bracing therapy for AIS.

Association of ESR1 Polymorphisms with Susceptibility to Migraine: A Meta-Analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis.

Background: Migraine is a highly prevalent and incapacitating neurological disorder mostly characterised by recurring attacks of moderate to severe throbbing and pulsating pain on one side of the head. The role of estrogen in migraine has been well documented. Although genetic variations in the ESR1 gene have been associated with an increased risk of developing migraine, the findings are inconsistent.
