Despite the high incidence of breast cancer in women worldwide, there are still great challenges in the treatment process. Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles, and their dynamics involve cellular energy conversion, signal conduction and other processes. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have affirmed the dynamics of mitochondria as the basis for cancer progression and metastasis; that is, an imbalance between mitochondrial fission and fusion may lead to the progression and metastasis of breast cancer.

Backgroud: MicroRNAs play important roles in the development and progression of many human diseases. mir-146a could significantly suppress the induction of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, NF-κB and chemokine MCP-1, which might play important roles in chronic pancreatitis. This study was conducted to evaluate the association between mir-146a rs2910164, a functional polymorphism in the pre-mir-146a, and chronic pancreatitis risk.

We conducted a case-control study to investigate the association between IL-6 -174 G>C and -572 C>G polymorphisms and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). We genotyped IL-6 -174 G>C and -572 C>G in 402 patients with CAD and 402 control individuals. IL-6 -174 G>C (rs1800795) and -572 C>G (rs1800796) alleles were detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.

More and more studies have reported that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) involved in the process of cancer development and progression occurs. The EMT also plays an important role in the movement and transfer of the tumors. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) could induce the EMT in some cancer cell types.

This study investigates the impact of simvastatin on neuroinflammation in experimental parkinsonian cell models. 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-treated pheochromocytoma-12 (PC12) cells were used to investigate the neuroprotective nature of simvastatin. After incubation with 6-OHDA, simvastatin, and/or N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor 1 (NMDAR1) siRNA for 24 hr, test kits were used to detect the levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glutamate released from PC12 cells exposed to different culture media.

Aims: To investigate the therapeutic effect of minimally-invasive aspiration and drainage in traumatic epidural hematoma straddling transverse sinus (TEHSTS).
Materials And Methods: Fifty-eight patients (39 males and 19 females) with TEHSTS and initial admission Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 8-10 (mean = 9) were treated with minimally-invasive aspiration and drainage under computed tomography (CT) guidance. Urokinase was used for irrigation and drainage.

Recently, using large-scale genomic sequencing, a great number of small noncoding RNAs (ncRNA) has been discovered. Short ncRNAs can be classified into three major classes--small interfering RNA (siRNA), microRNA (miRNA), and piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA). These short ncRNAs ranging from 20 to 300 nt in size are now recognized as a new paradigm of gene regulation for controlling many biological processes.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of 18-27-nucleotides single-stranded RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. It has been demonstrated that miRNAs regulate a variety of physiological functions, including development, cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. There are growing evidence showed that miRNAs can affect the genesis and development of tumor and play a kind of tumor suppressor or oncogenic function by regulating its targetted gene-related signal pathway.

Objectives: This study focused on PTEN and Livin expression and associations with malignancy in human renal clear cell carcinomas (RCCC).
Methods: PTEN and Livin expression was assessed in 100 RCCC tissue samples, 50 paracarcinoma cases, and 20 normal renal tissue samples using the immunohistochemical Streptavidin proxidase (SP) method. The relationships between binding and corresponding biological characteristics, such as histological grade, lymph node metastases, and clinical stages were analyzed.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small non-protein coding RNAs that play important regulatory roles in animals and plants by binding to target transcripts for cleavage or translational repression. The miR-9a is very conservative in animals from flies to humans. Studies indicated that miR-9a is involved in the regulation of neurogenesis in animals.

The discovery of large numbers of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been driven by genome-wide transcriptional analyses. Compared to small ncRNAs, lncRNAs have been shown to harbor biological activities, but the functions of the great majority of lncRNAs are not known. There is growing evidence that lncRNAs can regulate gene expression at epigenetic, transcription, and post-transcription levels and widely take part in various physiological and pathological processes, such as participating in cell development, immunity, oncogenesis, clinical disease processes, etc.

Antibacterial peptides from various sources express different antibacterial activity. In order to obtain a high activity antibacterial peptide, the sequences of four antimicrobial peptides--Protegrin-1, 4 kDa Scorpion Defensin, Metalnikowin-2A and Sheep Myeloid Antibacterial Peptide SMAP-29--were exploited to generate a synthetic antimicrobial peptide cp gene, which was then cloned into the expression vector pPICZalpha-A. The constructed recombinant expression vector pPICZalpha-cp was transformed into Pichia pastoris X-33, in which the synthetic antimicrobial peptide (CP) could be expressed under the control of the inducible AOX1 promoter and secreted via the alpha mating factor leader of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
