Occurrence and severity of myasthenic crisis in an unselected Turkish cohort of patients with myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disorder of the neuromuscular junction that can deteriorate into myasthenic crisis, involving weakness of bulbar and respiratory muscles. In this study, we describe the clinical manifestations of myasthenic crisis, identify risk factors, and examine treatments and outcomes. All 95 patients with generalized MG treated at our center during the last 10 years were included in this retrospective study.

Objectives: Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) is a widely used method for bacterial species identification. Incomplete databases and mass spectral quality (MSQ) still represent major challenges. Important proxies for MSQ are the number of detected marker masses, reproducibility, and measurement precision.

Validation of the PAGE-B score to predict hepatocellular carcinoma risk in caucasian chronic hepatitis B patients on treatment.

Background: Several risk scores have been developed to predict hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. The majority of risk scores are based on pretreatment variables that are no longer considered risk factors for HCC development due to the suppression of hepatitis B virus replication early in the course of potent antiviral treatment in most patients. The PAGE-B score, which is based on platelet levels, age and sex, has been shown to accurately predict HCC risk in CHB patients on antiviral treatment in various populations.

Measurements are one of the most important means of evaluating the quality of antibiotic consumption. This study has evaluated the antibiotic consumption using one-day point prevalence study data collected from different hospitals in Turkey. This research was planned as a multicenter point surveillance study which aimed demonstrating the use of antibiotics among inpatients in Turkey.

The VDR gene FokI polymorphism is associated with gestational diabetes mellitus in Turkish women.

Background: The association between the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has not been investigated in Turkish pregnant women. We aimed to investigate associations between VDR gene BsmI (rs15444410), ApaI (rs7975232), FokI (rs19735810), and TaqI (rs731236) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and GDM.

Material-methods: This case-control study comprised 100 women with GDM and 135 pregnant women without GDM.

BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often reported in connection with interstitial lung disease. As yet, there is insufficient data on the association of OSA severity parameters with lung involvement. We purposed to assess the frequency of OSA in our study group and to investigate the relationship between radiological involvement and OSA severity parameters.

Endophthalmitis After XEN Gel Stent Implantation: 2 Cases.

Herein, we report 2 cases of endophthalmitis after XEN Gel Stent implantation. A 68-year-old woman and an 80-year-old man had previously undergone uncomplicated XEN Gel Stent implantation for primary open-angle glaucoma 4 and 5 months prior, respectively. Both patients had presented with pain, redness, loss of vision, and sensitivity to light.

Background: The MF07-01 trial is a multicenter, phase III, randomized, controlled study comparing locoregional treatment (LRT) followed by systemic therapy (ST) with ST alone for treatment-naïve stage IV breast cancer (BC) patients.

Methods: At initial diagnosis, patients were randomized 1:1 to either the LRT or ST group. All the patients were given ST either immediately after randomization or after surgical resection of the intact primary tumor.

Recurrent Pilonidal Sinus Cyst on Penis.

Pilonidal sinus, including one or more sinus canals and hairs, is a disease with a chronic course showing acute attacks which is often encountered in the general population, usually affecting young adults, at a rate in males twice that of females. Pilonidal sinus on the penis is so rare that very few cases have been reported in literature. A 20-year-old male presented to the urology outpatient clinic with the complaint of a suppurative lesion with discharge on the skin of the penis which had been ongoing for approximately three months.

Is the Homocysteine Level a Good Predictive Marker for Evaluating Kidney Function in Patients After Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the preoperative, early and late postoperative homocysteine levels and its relationship with kidney function in patients after undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL).

Materials And Methods: Twenty-three patients with kidney stones underwent PNL and blood samples were taken preoperatively as well as at 48 hours and three months after the operation. The homocysteine level was determined by high pressure liquid chromatography and the fluorometric method in blood samples with ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid.

Turkish case of ethylmalonic encephalopathy misdiagnosed as short chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency.

Ethylmalonic encephalopathy is a very rare autosomal recessively inherited inborn error of metabolism; characterized by encephalopathy, recurrent petechiae without bleeding diathesis, chronic diarrhea, and orthostatic acrocyanosis. Here, we describe a case of ethylmalonic encephalopathy with late onset neurologic symptoms and a confusing family history of two deceased brothers with the wrong suspicion of short chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency.

A Rare Cause of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Retropharyngeal Lipoma.

Lipoma is the most common benign mesenchymal neoplasm. About 16% of lipomas arise in the head and neck region, especially in the posterior neck. Large lipomas that originate from the retropharyngeal space may cause dyspnea, dysphagia, and snoring and occasionally may lead to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is defined as the prolapse of the pelvic organs toward or through the vaginal opening as a result of the weakening of the combination of nerves, muscles and fascia, which normally protect and support the physical position of pelvic organs. In this case report, the 30-year old patient who applied with the pelvic prolapse through the vaginal opening was treated with Sacro Uterine Ligamentopexy and anterior 6 arms mesh implant, without applying hysterectomy. In the short follow-up period of three months, both anatomic improvement and positive developments in sexual and social life have been recorded in the patient's life.

Retroperitoneal haemangiopericytoma.

A 55-year-old woman, diagnosed with a renal mass by abdominal ultrasonography (USG) in an external medical centre, presented to our hospital. The medical history was unremarkable except for diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The haemogram and urine tests were normal.

Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate Using 120 W High Performance System: A Prospective Evaluation of Results Over 2 Years.

Purpose: This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of photoselective vaporization of prostate using the 120 W High Performance System for management of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Methods: We prospectively obtained data from 229 patients between January 2009 and December 2012. We evaluated the serum prostate specific antigen level, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), prostate volume; maximum urine flow rate (Q); and postvoid residual urine volume (PVR) in the patients at presentation and on follow-up at 1, 6, 12, and 24 months.

Pulmonary agenesis is a rarely encountered congenital anomaly, and its average prevalence is about 1 in 100,000 births. Anomalies of the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, or genitourinary systems may accompany in nearly half of the cases. The diagnosis of pulmonary agenesis is usually made during childhood, but the diagnosis may be delayed until adulthood in case of an absence of comorbid anomalies .

Robotic kidney transplantation: The Bakırköy experience.
