Oxygen homeostasis is maintained in plants and animals by O-sensing enzymes initiating adaptive responses to low O (hypoxia). Recently, the O-sensitive enzyme ADO was shown to initiate degradation of target proteins RGS4/5 and IL32 via the Cysteine/Arginine N-degron pathway. ADO functions by catalysing oxidation of N-terminal cysteine residues, but despite multiple proteins in the human proteome having an N-terminal cysteine, other endogenous ADO substrates have not yet been identified.

The Prognostic Value of Human Papillomavirus Status in Penile Cancer: Outcomes From a Norwegian Cohort Study.

Clin Genitourin Cancer

October 2024

Department of Urology, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway; Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway. Electronic address:

Introduction: Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) can develop from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This study investigates if the prognostic value of the TNM stage groups or the components tumor stage (pT), grade of differentiation (Grade), lymphovascular invasion (LVI), and nodular stage (pN) depend on HPV status. Also, whether the value of tumor parameters (pT, Grade, and LVI) for predicting node-positive disease depends on HPV status was investigated.

DDR2 expression in breast cancer is associated with blood vessel invasion, basal-like tumors, tumor associated macrophages, regulatory T cells, detection mode and prognosis.

Hum Pathol

August 2024

Centre for Cancer Biomarkers CCBIO, Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Bergen, Norway; Department of Pathology, Haukeland University Hospital, Norway. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • DDR2 is a receptor tyrosine kinase that plays a role in promoting tumor aggressiveness in breast cancer by stimulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition and interaction with immune cells, particularly CD163+ macrophages and FOXP3 TILs.
  • A study involving 282 breast cancer cases from Norway found high DDR2 expression correlates with factors like blood vessel invasion, hormone receptor negativity, and a greater likelihood of aggressive tumor features, including triple-negative subtype and basal-like characteristics.
  • High levels of DDR2 were also associated with a significantly shorter recurrence-free survival in patients, suggesting its potential as a prognostic marker in breast cancer.

Prognosis determines major decisions regarding treatment for critically ill patients. Statistical models have been developed to predict the probability of survival and other outcomes of intensive care. Although they were trained on the characteristics of large patient cohorts, they often do not represent very old patients (age ≥ 80 years) appropriately.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the link between heavy alcohol use and young-onset cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS) in individuals aged 18-49.
  • Patients showed significantly higher rates of heavy drinking compared to stroke-free controls, with 13.7% of CIS patients classified as heavy alcohol users versus 6.7% of controls.
  • The findings suggest that heavy alcohol consumption, especially binge drinking, is an independent risk factor for CIS in young men, but not in women.

Unlabelled: is an emerging human and animal pathogen. Functional studies of genes involved in virulence of and other pyogenic group streptococci are often hampered by limited genetic tractability. It is known that pyogenic streptococci carry genes required for competence for natural transformation; however, in contrast to other streptococcal subgroups, there is limited evidence for gene transfer by natural transformation in these bacteria.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial diseases cause neuronal death and depletion of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), with astrocytes potentially playing a damaging role in neurodegeneration.
  • Research using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from patients with POLG mutations showed that the resulting astrocytes experienced significant mitochondrial dysfunction and developed a toxic phenotype.
  • When these dysfunctioning astrocytes interacted with neurons, they induced neuronal death, highlighting a novel toxic contribution of astrocytes to the progression of POLG-related diseases.

  • Dysmorphologists face challenges due to the diverse phenotypic variability of human faces, particularly when using Next-Generation Phenotyping (NGP) tools, which are often trained on limited data.
  • To address this, the GestaltMatcher Database (GMDB) was created, compiling over 10,980 facial images from various global populations, significantly improving the representation of underrepresented ancestries, especially African and Asian patients.
  • The study found that incorporating data from non-European patients enhanced NGP accuracy by over 11% without compromising performance for European patients, highlighting the importance of diverse datasets in identifying genetic disorders.

Background: Response to hormonal therapy in advanced and recurrent endometrial cancer (EC) can be predicted by oestrogen and progesterone receptor immunohistochemical (ER/PR-IHC) expression, with response rates of 60% in PR-IHC > 50% cases. ER/PR-IHC can vary by tumour location and is frequently lost with tumour progression. Therefore, we explored the relationship between ER/PR-IHC expression and tumour location in EC.

The gene has been proposed as a promising phylogenetic marker for bacterial identification, providing theoretically improved species-level resolution compared to the 16S rRNA gene for a range of clinically important taxa. However, its utility in diagnostic microbiology has been limited by the lack of broad-range primers allowing for its amplification from most species with a single PCR assay. Here, we present an assay for broad-range partial amplification and Sanger sequencing of the gene.
