Walking and balance in older adults with age-related hearing loss: A cross-sectional study of cases and matched controls.

Background: Hearing loss (HL) is prevalent in older individuals. It is suggested that there is an association between age-related HL, walking and balance, leading to poorer function and increased risk of falls in older individuals.

Research Question: Is HL associated with physical performance, gait variability, and postural sway in older adults, and will additional dizziness moderate the effect of HL on balance?

Methods: In this cross-sectional study we examined 100 older individuals (age ≥70 years, 60 % females), divided in two groups, with or without age-related HL.

Functional Characterization of ABCA4 Missense Variants Aids Variant Interpretation and Phenotype Prediction in Patients With ABCA4-Retinal Dystrophies.

Purpose: Biallelic pathogenic variants in the gene encoding the ATP-binding cassette transporter ABCA4 are the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs). Interpretation of ABCA4 variants is challenging, due to cis-modifying and hypomorphic variants. We have previously detected 10 missense variants of unknown significance (VUS) in patients with suspected ABCA4-retinal dystrophies (ABCA4-RDs) in Norway.

Practical recommendations for swallowing and speaking during NIV in people with neuromuscular disorders.

Objectives: The functions of eating, drinking, speaking, and breathing demand close coordination of the upper airway musculature which may be challenged by the long-term use of daytime non-invasive ventilation (NIV). This rapid review explores the challenges and practicalities of these interactions in people with neuromuscular disorders.

Methods: A search was performed on PubMed (period 2000-2023) using generic terms to refer to eating, drinking, and speaking related to people with neuromuscular disorders on NIV.

Mass cytometric single cell immune profiles of peripheral blood from acute myeloid leukemia patients in complete remission with measurable residual disease.

Five-Year Results of the Salto XT Revision Ankle Arthroplasty.

Introduction: Educational health promotion interventions for people with early-stage dementia have shown promising results, including empowering the person with dementia to live well and cope with their condition.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore how group interactions, course structure, and facilitation by healthcare professionals in a 12-week educational health promotion course promote coping, healthy behaviors, and empowerment in people with early-stage dementia.

Method: A focused ethnographic approach was employed, collecting data through moderate participant observations of people with early-stage dementia who attended the health promotion course and field conversations with the facilitators.

The Contemporary Role of Salvage Radical Prostatectomy in the Management of Recurrent Prostate Cancer: An Up-to-Date Review.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, with many treatment modalities available for patients, such as radical prostatectomy, external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy, high-intensity focused ultrasound, cryotherapy, electroporation and other whole-gland or focal ablative novel techniques. Unfortunately, up to 60% of men with prostate cancer experience recurrence at 5 to 10 years. Salvage radical prostatectomy can be offered as an option in the setting of recurrence after a primary non-surgical treatment.

Verbal Learning and Memory Deficits across Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Insights from an ENIGMA Mega Analysis.

Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals.

Tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants upregulate VMAT2 activity and rescue disease-causing VMAT2 variants.

Vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) is an essential transporter that regulates brain monoamine transmission and is important for mood, cognition, motor activity, and stress regulation. However, VMAT2 remains underexplored as a pharmacological target. In this study, we report that tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants acutely inhibit, but persistently upregulate VMAT2 activity by promoting VMAT2 protein maturation.

Characterization of gray matter volume changes from one week to 6 months after termination of electroconvulsive therapy in depressed patients.

Background: Increased gray matter volume (GMV) following electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been well-documented, with limited studies reporting a subsequent decrease in GMV afterwards.

Objective: This study characterized the reversion pattern of GMV after ECT and its association with clinical depression outcome, using multi-site triple time-point data from the Global ECT-MRI Research Collaboration (GEMRIC).

Methods: 86 subjects from the GEMRIC database were included, and GMV in 84 regions-of-interest (ROI) was obtained from automatic segmentation of T1 MRI images at three timepoints: pre-ECT (T), within one-week post-ECT (T), and one to six months post-ECT (T).

Effects of implant precoating and fat contamination on the stability of the tibial baseplate.

Background: Approximately 5% of primary total knee arthroplasty patients require revision within 10 years, often due to distal component loosening. Application of a thin layer of PMMA cement as precoating on the tibial component aims to prevent aseptic loosening. This study investigates the impact of precoating and fat contamination on tibial baseplate stability.

Does botulinum neurotoxin A make walking easier in children with cerebral palsy? A randomized clinical trial.

Aim: To assess the effect of single botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) injections into the calf muscles on the gross energy cost of walking in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to evaluate the effect of BoNT-A on walking capacity, physical activity, perceived changes in mobility, and pain.

Midazolam Indications and Dosing in Palliative Medicine: Results from a Multinational Survey.

Despite sparse evidence and limited guidance on indications, use, and dosing, midazolam is widely used in palliative care. We aimed to describe and compare the use of midazolam in three different countries to improve clinical practice in palliative care. We performed an online survey among palliative care physicians in Norway, Denmark, and the United Kingdom (UK).

Carbamylation Is Instrumental in End-Stage Kidney Disease Coagulopathies: The Impact on von Willebrand Factor and Platelet Functionality.

Background:  Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive, irreversible, and incurable condition characterized by high morbidity and mortality, affecting approximately one-tenth of the global population. Rise of urea-derived cyanate levels in CKD patients, severalfold higher in comparison to those found in healthy individuals, leads to an increased rate of carbamylation of lysine residues of proteins and peptides. This posttranslational modification plays an important role in the progression of kidney failure but also in the onset of CKD-related complications, including previously reported coagulopathies.

Periodic stays in a 'playcage' as an environmental enrichment measure for laboratory rats housed in individually ventilated cages: Short report.

Male Zucker Diabetic Sprague Dawley rats were housed in standard individually ventilated cages with floor area of 1500 cm, and were placed in a 'playcage' (a large open cage) for three visits per week from the age of 16-18 weeks. The playcage was introduced in an attempt to reverse the compulsive behaviour that the rats displayed in the individually ventilated cages, with the purpose to increase their well-being and to provide cognitive as well as physical stimulation. After two weeks of periodic stays in the playcage, the rats' repetitive behaviour in their home cage ceased, and the rats displayed signs of happiness and excitement when they were in the playcage.

Hepatectomy versus systemic therapy for liver-limited BRAF V600E-mutated colorectal liver metastases: multicentre retrospective study.

Background: To date, only two studies have compared the outcomes of patients with liver-limited BRAF V600E-mutated colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs) managed with resection versus systemic therapy alone, and these have reported contradictory findings.

Methods: In this observational, international, multicentre study, patients with liver-limited BRAF V600E-mutated CRLMs treated with resection or systemic therapy alone were identified from institutional databases. Patterns of recurrence/progression and overall survival were compared using multivariable analyses of the entire cohort and a propensity score-matched cohort.
