Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is sometimes included in temporary endodontic filling materials to modify viscosity. PEG is considered a low hazard chemical, but parenteral PEG exposure is associated with a risk of anaphylaxis. We report 2 cases of anaphylaxis after treatment with an endodontic temporary filling material containing PEG.

Improving Ebola virus disease outbreak control through targeted post-exposure prophylaxis.

Lancet Glob Health

October 2024

UMR 1136 IPLESP unit, Sorbonne Université, Paris, France; Infectious Disease Department, Hopital Saint Antoine, Paris, France. Electronic address:

Ebola virus disease kills more than half of people infected. Since the disease is transmitted via close human contact, identifying individuals at the highest risk of developing the disease is possible on the basis of the type of contact (correlated with viral exposure). Different candidates for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP; ie, vaccines, antivirals, and monoclonal antibodies) each have their specific benefits and limitations, which we discuss in this Viewpoint.

Unlabelled: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) remain a significant global cause of infectious disease-related mortality. Accurate discrimination between acute bacterial and viral LRTIs is crucial for optimal patient care, prevention of unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, and resource allocation. Plasma samples from LRTI patients with bacterial ( = 36), viral ( = 27; excluding SARS-CoV-2), SARS-CoV-2 ( = 22), and mixed bacterial-viral ( = 38) etiology were analyzed for protein profiling.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on assessing mitral annular strain using a new computational technique in pigs.
  • Results indicated that global annular strain decreases after isovolumetric contraction, with the P2 segment showing the greatest shortening while the anterior segment deformed the least.
  • The findings suggest that mitral annular strain has significant regional differences and remains stable despite changes in preload and afterload, correlating instead with left ventricular contractility.

Malignant ascites is commonly produced in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and serves as unique microenvironment for tumour cells. Acellular ascites fluid (AAF) is rich in signalling molecules and has been proposed to play a role in the induction of chemoresistance. Through in vitro testing of drug sensitivity and by assessing intracellular phosphorylation status in response to mono- and combination treatment of five EOC cell lines after incubation with AAFs derived from 20 different patients, we investigated the chemoresistance-inducing potential of ascites.

Improving Pain Management in the Intensive Care Unit by Assessment.

Pain Manag Nurs

December 2024

Department of Health and Caring Sciences, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Bergen, Norway; Institute for Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, VID Specialized University, Oslo, Norway.

Purpose: Patients in the intensive care unit suffer from pain caused by life-threatening illness or injury but also treatments such as surgery and nursing procedures such as venipuncture. Unconsciousness following head trauma or sedation stage complicates self-report, and both under- and over-management of pain can occur. Inadequate assessment and treatment might follow from unsuitable pain assessment practices.

Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) has been primarily studied in low and intermediate-grade digestive neuroendocrine tumors (NET G1-G2). The documentation of a similar benefit for high-grade digestive neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) has been limited. This review evaluates the use of PRRT for high-grade digestive NEN (well-differentiated NET G3 and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas [NEC]).

Childhood trauma types in relation to antipsychotic effectiveness in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: A prospective, pragmatic, randomized controlled study.

Psychiatry Res

November 2024

Division of Psychiatry, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway; Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway; NORMENT Centre of Excellence, Bergen, Norway.

Treatment with antipsychotics (APs) for schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) is generally effective, however, a significant proportion does not respond favorably. Childhood trauma (CT) subtypes (physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect) could influence treatment effectiveness; however, research is scarce. Heterogeneity in AP response could be explained by differentiating by CT subtype.

Effects of extrapulmonary TB on patient quality of life and recurrence.

Public Health Action

September 2024

Centre for International Health, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the importance of assessing quality of life (QoL) in patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB), specifically focusing on those with tuberculous lymphadenitis and pleuritis.
  • Data was collected from 376 patients at different stages of treatment to evaluate various health domains related to their overall well-being.
  • Results showed that while most patients experienced QoL improvements post-treatment, some had recurrences, and factors like income and living conditions were found to negatively influence emotional health, indicating the need for healthcare providers to consider these non-medical factors.
