Purpose: Our aim was to investigate any adverse effects of long-term polytherapy (VPA and add-on-therapy) on bone biochemical markers in ambulatory children and adolescents with epilepsy and the possible benefits of vitamin D supplementation on the same markers.

Methods: In this prospective interventional study, the levels of 25(OH)D and the bone turnover markers of CrossLaps (CTX), total alkaline phosphatase (tALP), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and the receptor activator for nuclear factor kB (RANK) ligand (sRANKL) were determined in forty-two ambulatory children with epilepsy on polytherapy (valproic acid + one or more other from levetiracetam, topiramate, lamotrigine, or rufinamide). The same markers were assessed after a year's supplementation of vitamin D (400 IU/d) and were compared with those of clinically healthy controls.

Purpose: Our aim was to investigate any adverse effects of long-term valproic acid (VPA) therapy on bone biochemical markers in ambulatory children and adolescents with epilepsy, and the possible benefits of vitamin D supplementation on the same markers.

Methods: In this single center, the prospective interventional study levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and the bone turnover indices of Crosslaps (CTX), total alkaline phosphatase (tALP), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and the receptor activator for nuclear factor kB (RANK) ligand (sRANKL) were assessed before and after one year of vitamin D intake (400 IU/d) and were compared with those of clinically healthy controls. Fifty-four ambulatory children with mean (±standard deviation [SD]) age 9.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) aberrations have been implicated in the pathogenesis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) but their impact on prognosis and, therefore, druggability, remain controversial. Herein, we studied EGFR aberrations at different molecular levels and assessed their prognostic impact in patients with operable TNBC treated with adjuvant anthracycline-based chemotherapy.

Materials And Methods: We evaluated the prognostic impact of EGFR gene status by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), EGFR coding mutations by Sanger and next-generation sequencing, relative EGFR messenger RNA (mRNA) levels by qPCR (upper quartile) and EGFR and p53 protein expression by immunohistochemistry (IHC), in 352 centrally-assessed tumors from an equal number of TNBC patients.

Background: Depending on the extent of left colon resection, splenic flexure mobilization is sometimes necessary to achieve a tension-free anastomosis. The aim of the study was the assessment of necessity and impact on morbidity of splenic flexure mobilization for laparoscopic colectomy with anastomosis for cancer located distally to the splenic flexure.

Patients And Methods: Patients subjected to laparoscopic colectomy for carcinoma located at any site from the descending colon to the distal rectum from 2004 to 2010 were reviewed.

Background And Aim: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in intensive care units (ICUs). However, its incidence and outcome vary in several studies depending on definitions used or even the geographic origin of the study. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of AKI in ICUs in Greece.

Transplant patient plasma produces an increased rate of mononuclear cell apoptosis despite a normal serum creatinine value. Immunosuppressive medications may be one factor that causes an altered apoptotic pattern. We evaluated the in vitro effects of various doses of cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil, and steroids on apoptosis of a cultured human monocytic U937 cell line, using estimates by fluorescence microscopy and annexin V assays.

Background: Darbepoetin alfa is an erythropoietis-stimulating glycoprotein with a ∼3-fold longer t1/2 and greater biological activity compared with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO).

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy andtolerability of long-term (24-week) darbepoetin alfa treatment in maintaining hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations in the target range of 10 to 13 g/dL in patients undergoing dialysis; the patients were switched from rHuEPO to a less-frequent dosing regimen of darbepoetin alfa without an increase in dose.

Methods: In this Phase IIlb, open-label, multicenter study, patients withend-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing dialysis who were receiving rHuEPO BIW or TIW at baseline were switched to darbepoetin alfa QW; patients receiving rHuEPO QW were switched to darbepoetin alfa Q2W Administration of darbepoetin alfa was by the same route as previous rHuEPO administration (IV or SC).

Uremia is associated with a state of immune dysfunction with increased susceptibility to infection and malignancy possibly related to dysregulation of immune system cell apoptosis. Peritoneal dialysis can restore plasma apoptosis activity on monocytes compared to intermittent hemodialysis. Whether the continuous modality or diverse clearance mechanisms involved are responsible is unknown.
