Porous-activated carbons (ACs) derived from Moroccan pine cones (PC) were synthesised by a two step-chemical activation/carbonisation method using phosphoric acid (PC-H) and zinc chloride (PC-Z) as activating agents and used for the adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA) from water. Several techniques (TGA/DTA, FT-IR, XRD, SEM and BET) were used to determine the surface area and pore characterisation and variations during the preparation of the adsorbents. The modification significantly increased the surface area of both ACs, resulting in values of 1369.

P-element-induced wimpy testis (PIWI)-interacting RNAs (piRNAs/piRs) are a class of small noncoding RNAs that play a crucial role in regulating various biological processes, including carcinogenesis. One specific piRNA, piR-651, has been reported to be overexpressed in both human blood serum and solid cancer tissues, that can be used a viable biomarker in cancer diagnosis. Early diagnosis of cancer can help reduce the burden of the disease and improve survival rates.

Identification and characterization of a new pathologic mutation in a large Leber hereditary optic neuropathy pedigree.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

April 2024

Departamento de Bioquímica, Biología Molecular y Celular, Universidad de Zaragoza, 50009- and 50013, Zaragoza, Spain.

Background: Most patients suffering from Leber hereditary optic neuropathy carry one of the three classic pathologic mutations, but not all individuals with these genetic alterations develop the disease. There are different risk factors that modify the penetrance of these mutations. The remaining patients carry one of a set of very rare genetic variants and, it appears that, some of the risk factors that modify the penetrance of the classical pathologic mutations may also affect the phenotype of these other rare mutations.

Huperzine A (HUP) plays a crucial role in Alzheimer's therapy by enhancing cognitive function through increased cholinergic activity as a reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. Despite some limitations being seen in AChE inhibitors, ongoing research remains dedicated to finding innovative and more effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease. To achieve the goal of the discovery of potential HUP analogues with improved physicochemical properties, less toxic properties, and high biological activity, many in silico methods were applied.

Peptidoglycan is a carbohydrate with a cross-linked structure that protects the cytoplasmic membrane of bacterial cells from damage. The mechanism of peptidoglycan biosynthesis involves the main synthesizing enzyme glycosyltransferase MurG, which is known as a potential target for antibiotic therapy. Many MurG inhibitors have been recognized as MurG targets, but high toxicity and drug-resistant Escherichia coli strains remain the most important problems for further development.

Accurate estimation of photovoltaic (PV) panels' temperature is crucial for an accurate assessment for both the electrical and thermal aspects and performances. In this study we propose an advanced simulation approach linking a double-diode (DD) electrical model using the Artificial hummingbird algorithm; for parameter extraction; and a two-dimensional finite-difference-based thermal model. The electrical-sub model is firstly validated in comparison to experimental data figuring in literature using three types of PV technologies, with a relative error of about 2%.

The molecular electron density theory (MEDT) was employed to examine the [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between (E)-N-((dimethylamino)methylene)benzothioamide (1) and (S)-3-acryloyl-4-phenyloxazolidin-2-one (2) at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) design level. Parr functions and energy studies clearly show that this reaction is regio- and stereoselective, in perfect agreement with experimental results. By evaluating the chemical mechanism in terms of bond evolution theory (BET) and electron localization function (ELF), which divulges a variety of variations in the electron density along the reaction path, a single-step mechanism with highly asynchronous transition states structures was revealed.
