This study examines the emotional consequences of spending choices in everyday life across a diverse multinational sample. Based on a dataset of 200 participants across 7 countries who received $10,000 USD, we analyzed how happy they felt from different types of purchases made with that money. Participants derived high levels of happiness from some types of purchases that have been examined in past research (e.

December 2024

From the Division of Trauma, Burn, and Surgical Critical Care, Department of Surgery (M.C.-A., C.B.S., J.C.E., C.W., S.N., R.A., Z.C., A.S., J.M.H.), Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School; Center for Surgery and Public Health, Department of Surgery (M.C.-A., C.K.Z., M.J., Z.C., A.S., J.M.H.), Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School; Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health (M.C.-A., C.K.Z., M.J., Z.C., A.S., J.M.H.), Boston, Massachusetts; and Department of Surgery (C.K.Z.), Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.

Article Synopsis
  • Quality benchmarking in geriatric trauma care has shifted from short-term outcomes like morbidity and mortality to long-term metrics, with healthy days at home (HDAH) emerging as a useful measure of patient functional status.
  • A study of 772,109 Medicare patients showed that factors such as age, race, and level of care significantly impacted the number of HDAH following trauma.
  • The findings indicate that higher level trauma centers lead to better outcomes in terms of HDAH, suggesting a need for future research on quality of life metrics post-discharge.

TGD people of color and low-income TGD people experience intersecting discrimination that may compound chronic conditions and disability. To our knowledge, no research has focused on chronic conditions among TGD Medicare beneficiaries with disabilities.

Background: There is a shortage of rapid, accurate, and low-cost assays for diagnosing enteric fever. The dual-path platform for typhoid (DPPT) assay had high accuracy in retrospective studies with banked plasma samples. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the DPPT assay in a prospective study using fingerstick capillary blood.

Evolutionarily conserved selenoprotein O (SELENOO) catalyzes a post-translational protein modification known as AMPylation that is essential for the oxidative stress response in bacteria and yeast. Given that oxidative stress experienced in the blood limits survival of metastasizing melanoma cells, SELENOO might be able to impact metastatic potential. However, further work is needed to elucidate the substrates and functional relevance of the mammalian homologue of SELENOO.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. Despite of the progress in malaria control in the last decades, malaria remains a major public health problem, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality in tropical and subtropical countries. Among American countries, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil account for 73% of the cases.

Background: It remains unclear what lifestyle behaviors are optimal for controlling postprandial glucose responses under real-world circumstances in persons without diabetes. We aimed to assess associations of diet, physical activity, and sleep with postprandial glucose responses in Asian adults without diabetes under free-living conditions.

Methods: We conducted an observational study collecting intensive longitudinal data using smartphone-based ecological momentary assessments, accelerometers, and continuous glucose monitors over nine free-living days in Singaporean men and women aged 21-69 years without diabetes.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a partially heritable neurodevelopmental trait, and people with ASD may also have other co-occurring trait such as ADHD, anxiety disorders, depression, mental health issues, learning difficulty, physical health traits and communication challenges. The concomitant development of ASD and other neurological traits is assumed to result from a complex interplay between genetics and the environment. However, only a limited number of studies have performed multivariate genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for ASD.

Sphingolipid profiling as a biomarker of type 2 diabetes risk: evidence from the MIDUS and PREDIMED studies.

Cardiovasc Diabetol

December 2024

Department of Nutrition, Diabetes and Metabolism, School of Medicine, Pontificia Universidad Católica of Chile, Diagonal Paraguay #362, Santiago, Chile.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has become a worldwide pandemic. While ceramides may serve as intermediary between obesity-related lipotoxicity and T2D, the relationship with simple glycosphingolipids remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to characterize the associations between blood glycosphingolipid and ceramide species with T2D and to identify a circulating sphingolipid profile that could serve as novel biomarker for T2D risk.

Background: Understanding how and when a new evidence-based clinical intervention becomes standard practice is crucial to ensure that healthcare is delivered in alignment with the most up-to-date knowledge. However, rigorous methods are needed to determine when a new clinical practice becomes normalized to the standard of care. To address this gap, this study qualitatively explores how, when, and why a clinical practice change becomes normalized within healthcare organizations.

Background And Objectives: Antibiotics rapidly reduce intestinal bacterial diversity, leading to dysbiosis that persists for months to years. Although emerging evidence from retrospective and claims-based studies has linked dysbiosis to cognitive function, prospective data are lacking. We aim to examine the prospective association of antibiotics with cognitive aging among initially healthy older adults.

One in five women aged 20-24 years are first married before adulthood. Using the Violence against Children Surveys from Uganda and Malawi, we decomposed the total relationship between child marriage and psychological distress into an indirect relationship via intimate partner violence (IPV) and a direct relationship (above and beyond IPV). In Uganda, delaying marriage during adolescence reduced the probability of IPV and psychological distress in young adulthood; 45% of the total relationship between age at first marriage and psychological distress was mediated through IPV.

January 2025

CIBER Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y Nutrición (CIBEROBN), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Monforte de Lemos 3-5, Pabellón 11, Madrid 28029, Spain.

Background And Aims: Moderate wine consumption has been associated with lower cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in older populations. However, wine consumption information through self-reports is prone to measurement errors inherent to subjective assessments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between urinary tartaric acid, an objective biomarker of wine consumption, and the rate of a composite clinical CVD event.

Lipid metabolism is an essential component in reproductive physiology. While lipid mobilization has been implicated in the growth of Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites in their Anopheles vectors, the role of this process in the reproductive biology of these mosquitoes remains elusive. Here, we show that impairing lipolysis in Anopheles gambiae, the major malaria vector, leads to embryonic lethality.
