The study was designed to evaluate whether an educational intervention to train the health center (HC) staff to optimize care for sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients could improve documentation of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) and increase preventive screenings. Twelve HCs were matched and randomized to either receive a tailored, multicomponent educational intervention or a 1-hour prerecorded webinar. Documentation of SGM status and clinical testing was measured through analysis of data that HCs report annually.

Evidence-based cognitive-behaviour therapy for eating disorders (CBT-ED) differs from other forms of CBT for psychological disorders, making existing generic CBT measures of therapist competence inadequate for evaluating CBT-ED. This study developed and piloted the reliability of a novel measure of therapist competence in this domain-the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Scale for Eating Disorders (CBTS-ED). Initially, a team of CBT-ED experts developed a 26-item measure, with general (i.

Enhanced perioperative care protocols become the standard of care in elective surgery with a significant improvement in patients' outcome. The key element of the enhanced perioperative care protocol is the multimodal and interdisciplinary approach targeted to the patient, focused on a holistic approach to reduce surgical stress and improve perioperative recovery. Enhanced perioperative care in emergency general surgery is still a debated topic with little evidence available.

Ethnic differences of genetic risk and smoking in lung cancer: two prospective cohort studies.

Int J Epidemiol

December 2023

Department of Epidemiology, International Joint Research Center on Environment and Human Health, Center for Global Health, School of Public Health, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Background: The role of genetic background underlying the disparity of relative risk of smoking and lung cancer between European populations and East Asians remains unclear.

Methods: To assess the role of ethnic differences in genetic factors associated with smoking-related risk of lung cancer, we first constructed ethnic-specific polygenic risk scores (PRSs) to quantify individual genetic risk of lung cancer in Chinese and European populations. Then, we compared genetic risk and smoking as well as their interactions on lung cancer between two cohorts, including the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) and the UK Biobank (UKB).

Prior to 2021, the neuromuscular medicine fellowship application process suffered from non-standardized timelines and substantial variability. To rectify this, the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) established a standardized application timeline and an online application portal in 2020-2021, followed by the introduction of a partial match process. In 2021-2022, AANEM launched a traditional, binding, two-way match system for fellowship positions allocation based on the Gale-Shapley stable matching algorithm.

Purpose: Acute syndesmotic ankle injuries continue to impose a diagnostic dilemma and it remains unclear whether weightbearing and/or external rotation should be added during the imaging process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess if combined weightbearing and external rotation increases the diagnostic sensitivity of syndesmotic ankle instability using weightbearing CT (WBCT) imaging, compared to isolated weightbearing.

Methods: In this retrospective study, patients with an acute syndesmotic ankle injury were analysed using a WBCT (N = 21; Age = 31.

Carbone Cancer Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, USA; Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin- Madison, Madison, WI, USA. Electronic address:

Increased synthesis and release of inflammatory signalling proteins is common among individuals with hematologic malignancies undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) due to intensive conditioning regimens and complications such as graft-versus-host-disease and infections. Prior research indicates that inflammatory responses can activate central nervous system pathways that evoke changes in mood. This study examined relationships between markers of inflammatory activity and depression symptoms following HCT.

In 2006, the Institute of Medicine published a report titled "Emergency Care for Children: Growing Pains," in which it described pediatric emergency care as uneven at best. Since then, telehealth has emerged as one of the great equalizers in care of children, particularly for those in rural and underresourced communities. Clinicians in these settings may lack pediatric-specific specialization or experience in caring for critically ill or injured children.

Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Biophysics PhD Program, Harvard University, The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Electronic address:

Noninvasive quantification of dermal diseases aids efficacy studies and paves the way for broader enrollment in clinical studies across varied demographics. Related to atopic dermatitis, accurate quantification of the onset and resolution of inflammatory flare ups in the skin remains challenging because the commonly used macroscale cues do not necessarily represent the underlying inflammation at the cellular level. Although atopic dermatitis affects over 10% of Americans, the genetic underpinnings and cellular-level phenomena causing the physical manifestation of the disease require more clarity.

Fit for Duty: Lessons Learned from Outpatient and Homebound Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation to Prepare Family Caregivers for Home-Based Care.

Transplant Cell Ther

March 2023

Department of Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Department of Psychiatry, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.

In the past decade, the demand for home-based care has been amplified by the Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Home-based care has significant benefits for patients, their families, and healthcare systems, but it relies on the often-invisible workforce of family and friend caregivers who shoulder essential health care responsibilities, frequently with inadequate training and support. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), a potentially curative but intensive treatment for many patients with blood disorders, is being increasingly offered in home-based care settings and necessitates the involvement of family caregivers for significant patient care responsibilities.

Article Synopsis
  • More than half of major cardiovascular events occur without obstructive coronary artery disease, often linked to high-risk atherosclerotic plaque rupture, with a need for better blood-based biomarkers to predict these events.
  • The study analyzed lipoprotein profiles in participants with stable symptoms of potential coronary artery disease, finding associations between certain high-density lipoprotein (HDL) subclasses and indicators of high-risk plaque.
  • Results indicated that larger and medium-sized HDL particles inversely correlate with high-risk plaque features and lower rates of major cardiovascular events, pointing towards their potential role in patient risk stratification.

The global pandemic of COVID-19 caused by infection with SARS-CoV-2 is now entering its fourth year with little evidence of abatement. As of December 2022, the World Health Organization Coronavirus (COVID-19) Dashboard reported 643 million cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide and 98 million in the United States alone as the country with the highest number of cases. Although pneumonia with lung injury has been the manifestation of COVID-19 principally responsible for morbidity and mortality, myocardial inflammation and systolic dysfunction though uncommon are well-recognized features that also associate with adverse prognosis.

School of Psychology, Shenzhen University; The Shenzhen Humanities & Social Sciences, Key Research Bases of the Center for Mental Health, Shenzhen University. Electronic address:

Mindfulness-based interventions, an evidence-based stress reduction approach, may help incarcerated people cope with stress-related problems in the challenging environment of prison. However, due to their unique living environment, the duration and instructor guidance required by standard mindfulness-based interventions would be infeasible in most prisons. Therefore, the aims of the current study were to test the effects of two different 4-day interventions (i.

The longitudinal associations between academic competence-building and depression symptoms were investigated among 741 early adolescents in Singapore. Extending from past studies on academic achievement and depression, the current research tested two competing hypotheses - the hypothesis versus the hypothesis using a 3-wave longitudinal study over an academic year. The former hypothesis suggests that prior deficits in academic competence-building lead to subsequent depression symptoms, whereas the latter posits that previous depression leads to subsequent deficits in competence-building.

A growing body of literature has emphasized the importance of biobehavioral processes - defined as the interaction of behavior, psychology, socioenvironmental factors, and biological processes - for clinical outcomes among transplantation and cellular therapy (TCT) patients. TCT recipients are especially vulnerable to distress associated with pandemic conditions and represent a notably immunocompromised group at greater risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection with substantially worse outcomes. The summation of both the immunologic and psychologic vulnerability of TCT patients renders them particularly susceptible to adverse biobehavioral sequelae associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Background: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) reliably precede and predict one another. However, there is insufficient data on mediators through which the longitudinal GAD-MDD association unfold. Based on insomnia theories, such as the hyperarousal model of sleep, we tested the degree to which poor global sleep quality functioned as a mediator of the prospective bidirectional anxiety-depression relationship.
