Background: Solid organ transplant recipients (ie, "recipients") have elevated cancer risk and reduced survival after a cancer diagnosis. Evaluation of cancer mortality among recipients can facilitate improved outcomes from cancers arising before and after transplantation.
Methods: We linked the US transplant registry to the National Death Index to ascertain the causes of 126 474 deaths among 671 127 recipients (1987-2018).

Introduction: The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has aided clinicians in the interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECGs) serving as an essential tool to provide rapid triage and care. However, in some cases, AI can misinterpret an ECG and may mislead the interpreting physician. Therefore, we aimed to describe the rate of ECG misinterpretation and its potential clinical impact in patient's management.

This study sought to determine if a previously constructed predictive model of ICU mortality (ViSIG) is robust when using data collected prospectively in near real-time.
Design: Prospectively collected data were aggregated and transformed to evaluate a previously developed rolling predictor of ICU mortality.

According to the American Heart Association, approximately 6 million adults have been afflicted with heart failure in the United States in 2020 and are more likely to have sudden cardiac death accounting for approximately 50% of the cause of mortality. Sotalol is a nonselective β-adrenergic receptor antagonist with class III antiarrhythmic properties that has been mostly used for atrial fibrillation treatment and suppressing recurrent ventricular tachyarrhythmias. The use of sotalol in patients with left ventricular dysfunction is not recommended by the American College of Cardiology or American Heart Association because studies are inconclusive with conflicting results regarding safety.

Background: The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) conducted extensive, inclusive community consultations to guide prioritization of research in coming decades in alignment with its mission to find cures and address and prevent complications enabling people and families with blood disorders to thrive.
Research Design And Methods: With the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network, NHF recruited multidisciplinary expert working groups (WG) to distill the community-identified priorities into concrete research questions and score their feasibility, impact, and risk. WG6 was charged with identifying the infrastructure, workforce development, and funding and resources to facilitate the prioritized research.

Background: Previous studies have documented a negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emergent percutaneous treatment of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), but few have examined recovery of healthcare systems in restoring prepandemic STEMI care.
Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed of data from 789 patients with STEMI from a large tertiary medical center treated with percutaneous coronary intervention between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2021.
Results: For patients with STEMI presenting to the emergency department, median time from door to balloon was 37 minutes in 2019, 53 minutes in 2020, and 48 minutes in 2021 (P < .

Background: Echocardiograms are recommended every 3 months in patients receiving human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2)-targeted therapy for surveillance of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Efforts to tailor treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer have led to greater use of non-anthracycline regimens that are associated with lower cardiotoxicity risk, raising into question the need for frequent cardiotoxicity surveillance for these patients. This study seeks to evaluate whether less frequent cardiotoxicity surveillance (every 6 months) is safe for patients receiving a non-anthracycline HER2-targeted treatment regimen.

Objective: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is widely considered a prodromal synucleinopathy, as most with RBD develop overt synucleinopathy within ~10 years. Accordingly, RBD offers an opportunity to test potential treatments at the earliest stages of synucleinopathy. The North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy (NAPS) Consortium has created a multisite RBD participant, primarily clinic-based cohort to better understand characteristics at diagnosis, and in future work, identify predictors of phenoconversion, develop synucleinopathy biomarkers, and enable early stage clinical trial enrollment.

The clinical impact of prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM) in patients with small aortic annuli who underwent transcatheter aortic valve (AV) implantation with either balloon-expandable (BE) or self-expanding (SE) valves remains controversial. We assessed in-hospital and intermediate clinical outcomes in 573 patients with transfemoral transcatheter AV implantation with a small AV annulus, defined as an AV annulus area ≤430 mm. A total of 337 patients treated with a 23-mm BE valve (SAPIEN 3, Ultra) were compared with 236 patients treated with a 26-mm SE valve (Evolut series).

Immunological injury to the allograft, specifically by antibodies to de novo donor specific human leukocyte antigen (dnDSA) and antibody mediated injury and rejection are the major limitations to graft survival after heart transplantation (HT). As such, our approach to allosensitization remains limited by the inability of contemporaneous immunoassays to unravel pathogenic potential of dnDSA. Additionally, the role of dnDSA is continuously evaluated with emerging methods to detect rejection.

Background: Cardiac liver cirrhosis secondary to Fontan procedure has been associated with hepatocellular carcinoma at a younger age. However, Fontan associated liver disease and combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma has not been previously reported. Combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma is a rare cancer that accounts for 2-5% of primary liver tumors and poses significant diagnostic and treatment challenges.

Heart transplantation (HT) remains the preferred therapy for patients with advanced heart failure. However, for sensitized HT candidates who have antibodies to human leukocyte antigens , finding a suitable donor can be challenging and can lead to adverse waitlist outcomes. In recent years, the number of sensitized patients awaiting HT has increased likely due to the use of durable and mechanical circulatory support as well as increasing number of candidates with underlying congenital heart disease.

Malignancy after heart transplantation is associated with poor outcomes. At present, no prediction model exists for any malignancy within the first year after transplant. We studied adults who underwent heart transplantation included in the multicenter, national Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients from January 2000 through April 2021.
