Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a life-changing treatment for people with recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). Frequently acquired in the hospital, CDI can cause serious gastrointestinal symptoms, including persistent watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, and severe dehydration. Antibiotics, the primary treatment, can unfortunately disrupt the gut microbiome and lead to antimicrobial resistance.

Nurse Educ

December 2023

Associate Professor (Dr Walker), Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth; Professor (Dr Hromadik), Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions, Indiana University of Pennsylvania; Assistant Professor (Dr Baker), College of Nursing, Purdue University Northwest, Hammond, Indiana; and Assistant Professor (Dr McQuiston), College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services, Indiana State University, Terre Haute.

Background: Although just culture is reportedly integrated across education and practice, little is known about how perceptions may change across time as students transition from prelicensure education to registered nurse in the practice setting.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe and compare just culture perceptions of registered nurses at 2 time points: (1) as prelicensure students and (2) as new graduate nurses with a minimum of 6 months of experience.

Methods: Utilizing the Just Culture Assessment Tool for Nursing Education (JCAT-NE) and the Just Culture Assessment Tool (JCAT), this within-subject, longitudinal study measured just culture perceptions across time.

Advances in Clinical Voice Quality Analysis with VOXplot.

J Clin Med

July 2023

Department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology Division, University Medicine Greifswald, 17475 Greifswald, Germany.

Background: The assessment of voice quality can be evaluated perceptually with standard clinical practice, also including acoustic evaluation of digital voice recordings to validate and further interpret perceptual judgments. The goal of the present study was to determine the strongest acoustic voice quality parameters for perceived hoarseness and breathiness when analyzing the sustained vowel [a:] using a new clinical acoustic tool, the VOXplot software.

Methods: A total of 218 voice samples of individuals with and without voice disorders were applied to perceptual and acoustic analyses.

Objective: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is the most common functional voice disorder. Behavioral voice therapy is the front-line treatment for MTD, and laryngeal manual therapy may be a part of this treatment. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of manual circumlaryngeal therapy (MCT) on acoustic markers of voice quality (jitter, shimmer, and harmonics-to-noise ratio) and vocal function (fundamental frequency) through a systematic review with meta-analysis.

September 2023

National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists, Chicago, IL, USA.

The balance of lifelong learning with assessment for continued certification is a challenge faced by healthcare professions. The value of single-point-in-time assessments has been questioned, and a shift to longitudinal assessments (LA) has been undertaken to assess lifelong learning over-time. This scoping review was conducted to inform healthcare certifying organizations who are considering LA as an assessment tool of competence and lifelong learning in healthcare professionals.

Extreme carbohydrate deficits during a ketogenic diet (KD) may result in metabolic adaptations reflective of low energy availability; however, the manifestation of these adaptations outside of exercise have yet to be elucidated in cyclists and triathletes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the chronic and postprandial metabolic responses to a KD compared to a high-carbohydrate diet (HCD) and habitual diet (HD) in trained competitive cyclists and triathletes. For this randomized crossover trial, six trained competitive cyclist and triathletes (F: 4, M: 2) followed an ad libitum KD and HCD for 14 d each after their HD.

Purpose: Pediatric patients scheduled for procedures with anesthesia experience stress and feelings of anxiety, but frequently lack the opportunity to report their feelings. Pediatric patient anxiety may be related to internal (patient perceptions/emotions) or external (demographic/family knowledge/satisfaction) factors. The purpose of the study was to explore patient reports of anxiety in young school-age through adolescent ages, and factors of family satisfaction before a scheduled procedure with anesthesia.

Historically, fat mass has been considered to have significant influence on human body energy homeostasis through its indirect relationship with appetite control. However, over the past decade, there has been a surge of evidence supporting the potential role of fat-free mass (FFM) in appetite control, and thus the regulatory involvement of FFM in appetite-related measures. Yet, the underlying biological mechanisms that explain the role of FFM in tonic/episodic appetite regulation remain unclear.

Definitions, theories, and measurement of stress in children.

J Pediatr Nurs

August 2022

University of Alabama at Birmingham, 1701 University Boulevard, Birmingham, AL 35294, USA. Electronic address:

Problem: Stress in children remains a complex concept to examine due to the inherent subjectivity and lack of specific manifestations, as well as the multiple ways stress can be defined and measured in children. Because stress is multifactorial,is experienced daily by children, and undergirds adolescent health and early mental illness, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of stress and the effects of stress in children from infancy through age twelve years.

Eligibility Criteria: To be included in this review, literature must pertain to and highlight theories, definitions/classifications, and measurements of stress in children from infancy to 12 years of age.

Introduction: Outcome measures describing acoustic voice quality and self-perceived vocal handicap are commonly used in clinical voice practice. Previous reports of the relationship between acoustic and self-perceived measures have found only limited associations, but it is unclear if acoustic measures associated with voice quality and self-perceived voice handicap change in a similar manner over the course of voice treatment. The current study, therefore, considered the relationship between the degree of change in Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and Voice Handicap Index (VHI-30 and VHI-10) in dysphonic patients receiving treatment in a private practice voice clinic.

Most athletes use dietary supplements (DS) to improve health and performance beyond what can be achieved through diet. Improvements in health and exercise performance through the use of DS are especially attractive to older athletes (OA) challenged with age-related declines. However, there are few DS shown to improve endurance performance, and the prevalence of DS in OA are unknown.
