Airborne PM pollution: A double-edged sword modulating hepatic lipid metabolism in middle-aged male mice.

Environ Pollut

May 2023

School of Public Health, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China; Zhejiang International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Air Pollution and Health, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Electronic address:

Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to airborne fine particulate matter (PM) is closely related to disturbances in hepatic lipid metabolism. However, no systematic study assessed the age vulnerability in effects of PM exposure on metabolism, and the potential mechanisms remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the metabolic susceptibility of different life stages to PM exposure, and to evaluate the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Cardiac Xenotransplantation: a New Frontier for Advanced Heart Failure.

Curr Treat Options Cardiovasc Med

March 2023

Kaufman Center for Heart Failure Treatment and Recovery, Heart Vascular and Thoracic Institute, Cleveland Clinic, 9500 Euclid Avenue, Desk J3-4, Cleveland, OH 44195, USA.

Purpose Of Review: Cardiac transplantation is a critical treatment for patients with advanced heart failure, offering the ability to markedly improve quality and quantity of life. Unfortunately, this treatment is limited by donor organ availability, despite efforts to increase organ supply and improve donor organ allocation and usage. The transplantation of non-human donor organs (xenotransplantation) offers to readily address many limitations of the current transplantation system; however, scattered attempts to establish this practice have been met with frustration.

Background And Objective: Compared with other imaging modalities, intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) has significant advantages for guiding percutaneous coronary interventions, assessing their outcomes, and characterizing plaque components. To aid IVOCT research studies, we developed the Optical Coherence TOmography PlaqUe and Stent (OCTOPUS) analysis software, which provides highly automated, comprehensive analysis of coronary plaques and stents in IVOCT images.

Methods: User specifications for OCTOPUS were obtained from detailed, iterative discussions with IVOCT analysts in the Cardiovascular Imaging Core Laboratory at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, a leading laboratory for IVOCT image analysis.

Risk factors and geographic disparities in premature cardiovascular mortality in US counties: a machine learning approach.

Sci Rep

February 2023

Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals, 11100 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH, 44106, USA.

Disparities in premature cardiovascular mortality (PCVM) have been associated with socioeconomic, behavioral, and environmental risk factors. Understanding the "phenotypes", or combinations of characteristics associated with the highest risk of PCVM, and the geographic distributions of these phenotypes is critical to targeting PCVM interventions. This study applied the classification and regression tree (CART) to identify county phenotypes of PCVM and geographic information systems to examine the distributions of identified phenotypes.

Background Proper function of endothelial cells is critical for vascular integrity and organismal survival. Studies over the past 2 decades have identified 2 members of the KLF (Krüppel-like factor) family of proteins, KLF2 and KLF4, as nodal regulators of endothelial function. Strikingly, inducible postnatal deletion of both KLF2 and KLF4 resulted in widespread vascular leak, coagulopathy, and rapid death.

Ameliorating Cardiovascular Risk in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

Endocrinol Metab Clin North Am

March 2023

University Hospitals Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, 11100 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106, USA. Electronic address:

Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which constitutes the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Intensive CVD risk factor control can ameliorate the elevated CVD associated with T2D. In this review, we provide an overview of CVD risk factor control, including traditional (blood pressure, glycemia, lipid, thrombosis, and lifestyle modifications) and nontraditional (social and environmental determinants of health) in patients with T2D, including evidence on management and outcomes.

Cardiovascular services in Covid-19 - Impact of the pandemic and lessons learned.

Prog Cardiovasc Dis

March 2023

Case Western Reserve University, Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals, Cleveland, OH, United States of America. Electronic address:

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic immediately and perhaps irrevocably impacted society at large, the provision of cardiovascular (CV) care, the function and staffing of hospitals, and CV clinicians. Initially many clinicians at all career stages rose to the challenges, and support and accolades were the initial societal response. Politicization of the public health response as well as widespread misinformation and disinformation all negatively impacted CV clinicians' roles as well diminished and, in some cases, eliminated their public and self-esteem.

Black men's awareness of peripheral artery disease and acceptability of screening in barbershops: a qualitative analysis.

BMC Public Health

January 2023

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, University Hospitals, Cleveland, OH, USA.

Introduction: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) disproportionately burdens Black Americans, particularly Black men. Despite the significant prevalence and high rate of associated morbidity and mortality, awareness of and treatment initiation for PAD remains low in this demographic group. Given the well-established social cohesion among barbershops frequently attended by Black men, barbershops may be ideal settings for health screening and education to improve awareness, early detection, and treatment initiation of PAD among Black men.
