MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that are able to regulate gene expression and play important roles in some biological and pathological processes, including the myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Recent findings demonstrated that miR-1 exacerbated I/R-induced injury. This study was to investigate theanti-apoptotic property of miR-1 inhibition and the potential regulatory mechanism.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the intracellular mechanism involved in the anti-apoptotic effect of ghrelin on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

Methods: HUVECs were pretreated with ghrelin before exposure to 200 μg/ml advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-BSA for 48 h. Cell viability and apoptosis were determined by MTT assay and Annexin V/PI staining.

Peripheral neuropathies are a major cause of morbidity in patients with diabetes mellitus. Up to now, drugs for improving the impaired nerve functions has been lacking for diabetic neuropathy. The antioxidant and neuroprotective effects of luteolin make it an attractive candidate for diabetic neuropathy.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women around the world. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer pathogenesis are only partially understood. Here, in this study, we found that miR-1228 was up-regulated in breast cancer cell lines and tissues.

Cyclooxygenase2 (Cox-2) is well known for glioma growth through up-regulation of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. MET, a hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) receptor, is also frequently high expressed in glioma, which promotes glioma growth and invasion. Here, we demonstrate that HGF/MET signaling can promote PGE2 production in glioma cells via Cox-2 up-regulation.

Sorcin is a penta-EF hand calcium binding protein, which is involved in the resistance to chemotherapeutics in cancer cells, and is overexpressed in various cancer cells. However, tumor relapse combined with the development of drug resistance remains a significant problem. Here, we demonstrated that silencing of Sorcin in chemotherapy resistance myeloma U266/ADM and KM3/DDP cell lines resulted in reduced cell proliferation, cell cycle arrest and cell apoptosis.

Bax inhibitor-1 (BI-1) is a novel anti-apoptotic protein. While the effect of BI-1 on apoptosis has been extensively studied, less is known about how BI-1 is related to oncogenesis and the progression, particularly, the invasion and metastasis of cancer. In this study, we investigated the expression and function of BI-1 in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the blood flow characteristics of intracranial vertebral-basilar artery (V-BA) in healthy Chinese adults with transcranial color Doppler flow imaging (TCDFI) and provide reference values of healthy people of different ages and genders.

Methods: Three hundred healthy Chinese adults were divided into three groups based on their ages: Group I: 20-39 years, Group II: 40-59 years, Group III: >/=60 years. Each group was subdivided into two subgroups according to their gender.

Motivation: Microarrays datasets frequently contain a large number of missing values (MVs), which need to be estimated and replaced for subsequent data mining. The focus of the paper is to study the effects of different MV treatments for cDNA microarray data on disease classification analysis.

Results: By analyzing five datasets, we demonstrate that among three kinds of classifiers evaluated in this study, support vector machine (SVM) classifiers are robust to varied MV imputation methods [e.
