Contribution of long-lived plasma cells to antibody-mediated allograft rejection.

Clin Transplant Res

December 2024

Laboratory of Autoimmunology, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Hanyang University College of Medicine, Seoul , Korea.

Persistent alloantigens derived from allograft tissues can be recognized by the host's alloreactive immune system. This process enables cognate B cells to differentiate into plasma cells, which secrete donor-specific antibodies that are key drivers of antibody-mediated allograft rejection. A subset of these plasma cells can survive for extended periods in a suitable survival niche and mature into long-lived plasma cells (LLPCs), which are a cellular component of humoral memory.

Objectives: To investigate the population-based incidence of uveitis and the differences between anterior and non-anterior uveitis using the comprehensive Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database.

Methods: We extracted data of patients who visited the clinic and were diagnosed with uveitis (based on Korean Classification of Diseases) from 2010 to 2021. The incidence of uveitis, differences between the demographics, and the underlying co-morbidities of anterior uveitis, non-anterior uveitis, and control groups were investigated.

Chronic lower back pain (CLBP) is a global health issue leading to significant disability and socioeconomic burden. Traditional treatments, including exercise and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), are often limited by physical and temporal constraints. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of multidisciplinary digital therapeutics (MORA Cure LBP) compared to conventional treatments.

Cisplatin-based chemotherapy has long been the standard first-line (1L) treatment for metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC). However, up to 50% of patients with mUC may be ineligible for cisplatin owing to comorbidities, necessitating alternative primary treatment options. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have emerged as a vital alternative for those unable to receive cisplatin.

Background/aims: Fexuprazan, a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker, was developed for treating acidrelated disorders. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of fexuprazan, unlike those of proton pump inhibitors, are independent of food effect. This study aims to evaluate differences in efficacy and safety of fexuprazan in patients with erosive esophagitis (EE) according to the timing of dosing.

Screening for Lung Cancer, Overdiagnosis, and Healthcare Utilization: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

J Thorac Oncol

December 2024

Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, South Korea. Electronic address:

Introduction: Guideline-discordant low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening may cause lung cancer (LC) overdiagnosis, but its extent and consequences are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of self-initiated, non-reimbursed LDCT screening in a predominantly non-smoking population and its impact on LC epidemiology and healthcare utilization.

Methods: This nationwide cohort study analyzed data from Korea's National Health Information Database (NHID) and eleven academic hospital screening centers (1999-2022).

Long-acting injectable antipsychotic use in patients with bipolar disorder: Findings from the REAP-BD study.

Asian J Psychiatr

December 2024

Department of Psychiatry, Taipei City Hospital and Psychiatric Center, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Psychiatry, Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taoyuan, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Aims: This study aimed to assess treatment patterns and the effectiveness of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) across various Asian countries. The study focused on comparing the choices of LAIs, other psychotropic medications, and their psychotropic drug load to explore real-world usage and evaluate the potential benefits of LAIs in BD treatment across different countries.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with BD patients diagnosed according to ICD-10-CM codes F31.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic allergic disorder characterized by eosinophilia and epithelial thickening, resulting in dysphagia. While emerging evidence implicates increased frequencies of group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and increased interleukin (IL)-33 expression in EoE pathogenesis, the precise mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of ILC2s in EoE pathogenesis.

Purpose: Identifying the palliative care needs of patients with advanced cancer is important for maintaining quality of life and timely transition to palliative care. We aimed to validate the Korean Sheffield Profile for Assessment and Referral for Care (K-SPARC) in such patients and establish its psychometric properties, including reliability, validity, and responsiveness to change.

Materials And Methods: We used the forward-back translated version of SPARC, which was verified through a pilot study, to assess the palliative care needs of patients with advanced cancer.

Predicting drug-target interactions (DTIs) with precision is a crucial challenge in the quest for efficient and cost-effective drug discovery. Existing DTI prediction models often require significant computational resources because of the intricate and exceptionally lengthy protein target sequences. This study introduces MMF-DTI, a lightweight model that uses multimodal fusion, to improve the generalizability of DTI predictions without sacrificing computational efficiency.

Aim Of Study: This study aimed to evaluate the completeness and quality of information in written discharge instructions for patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) discharged from the emergency department (ED).

Methods: Copies of written discharge instructions provided to patients with mTBI from academic EDs in South Korea were collected in May 2023. We assessed the completeness of the content based on the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines, which categorize discharge instructions into four parts: general advice, emergencies, common post-concussion symptoms and signs, and advice for recovery, with one point for each item.
