Controlled photooxidation-mediated disruption of collagens in the tumor microenvironment can reduce desmoplasia and enhance immune responsiveness. However, achieving effective light delivery to solid tumors, particularly those with dynamic volumetric changes like pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), remains challenging and limits the repeated and sustained photoactivation of drugs. Here, 3D, shape-morphing, implantable photonic devices (IPDs) are introduced that enable tumor-specific and continuous light irradiation for effective metronomic photodynamic therapy (mPDT).

Spectroelectrochemical insights into the intrinsic nature of lead halide perovskites.

Nano Converg

November 2024

Radiation Laboratory, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, 46556, USA.

Lead halide perovskites have emerged as a new class of semiconductor materials with exceptional optoelectronic properties, sparking significant research interest in photovoltaics and light-emitting diodes. However, achieving long-term operational stability remains a critical hurdle. The soft, ionic nature of the halide perovskite lattice renders them vulnerable to various instabilities.

Polyhexamethyleneguanidine phosphate (PHMG), a widely used antimicrobial agent, has been implicated in humidifier disinfectant-associated lung injuries (HDLI). PHMG exposure suppressed interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) activation and interferon-β (IFN-β) expression induced by a cGAS agonist or a STING agonist in human monocytic cells (THP-1), which are known to transition to alveolar macrophages during pulmonary fibrosis development. However, the mechanisms underlying PHMG-induced pulmonary toxicity in lung remain unclear.

Electrochemical alkaline water electrolysis offers significant economic advantages; however, these benefits are hindered by the high kinetic energy barrier of the water dissociation step and the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Herein, the ensemble effect of binary types of Rh single atoms (Rh-N and Rh-O) on TiO-embedded carbon nanofiber (Rh-TiO/CNF) is reported, which serves as potent active sites for high-performance HER in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). Density functional theory (DFT) analyses support the experimental observations, highlighting the critical role of binary types of Rh single atoms facilitated by the TiO sites.

Context: In recent years, rechargeable batteries have received considerable attention as a way to improve energy storage efficiency. Anodic (negative) electrodes based on Janus two-dimensional (2D) monolayers are among the most promising candidates. In this effort, the adsorption and diffusion of these Li, Na, and Mg ions on and through Janus 2D-TiSSe as anodic material was investigated by means of periodic DFT-D calculations.

Atomic-Level Insights into the Adsorption of Methyl-Substituted Quinoxalinones on Fe(110): A Dispersion-Corrected DFT Analysis.

Molecules

October 2024

Department of Architectural Engineering, Hanyang University ERICA, 55 Hanyangdaehak-ro, Sangrok-gu, Ansan-si 15588, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea.

Corrosion of metallic equipment is a critical issue across various industries, necessitating the development of advanced protective strategies. This study utilized dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) with Becke-Johnson D3(BJ) to examine the atomic-level adsorption of quinoxalinones on Fe(110) surfaces, focusing on optimizing substitution strategies to enhance corrosion inhibition. Three quinoxalinones, quinoxalin-2(1H)-one (QNO), 3-methylquinoxalin-2(1H)-one (QNOM), and 3,7-dimethylquinoxalin-2(1H)-one (QNO2M), were investigated in various configurations and protonation states.

In this study, we investigate the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process on all-inorganic CsPbBr perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) to introduce an inorganic electron transport layer (ETL) in light-emitting diode (LED) devices. Two types of CsPbBr PNCs were synthesized with oleate (OA) and oleylammonium (OLA) ligands on the surface. We found that CsPbBr PNCs with Cs oleate surfaces experienced severe photoluminescence (PL) quenching after the ALD process, while those with oleylammonium bromide surfaces did not show any significant PL drop.

The ligand engineering for single-atom catalysts (SACs) is considered a cutting-edge strategy to tailor their electrocatalytic activity. However, the fundamental reasons underlying the reaction mechanism and the contemplation for which the actual active site for the catalytic reaction depends on the pyrrolic and pyridinic N ligand structure remain to be fully understood. Herein, we first reveal the relationship between the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and the N ligand structure for the manganese (Mn) single atomic site by the precisely regulated pyrrolic and pyridinic N coordination environment.
